Cancel after 6 month, I guess

    • +21

You don’t have to wait till 6 months, you can just cancel after one month is over

      • +2

Why not cancel on the same day?

        • -3

It says it's a "plan", I'd assume given they're giving a $200 credit that if you cancel before the 6 months they'll hit you with a cancellation fee that also includes a pro-rata pay-back of the $200 credit.

          • +3

            @Ryven: "a pro-rata pay-back of the $200 credit."

            That's not how JB works.

            • +1

@SetTheFaqUp: It was when I was with Telstra through JB up to about 18 months ago. Had I cancelled prior to the contract run out, my cancellation fee was something like "number of months remaining on my contract divided by half my monthly fee plus the incentive signup amount divided by number of months remaining on my contract".

              • +2

@Ryven: You are dealing with two parties here
                1. JB - gives the voucher
                2. Telstra - provides the service.

For item 1, once you get the VC (and doorbell), Bob is uncle. There is no way for JB to recoupe those.

Item 2. All governed by the contracts signed. In this case "No lock-in Contract, cancel anytime".

                • -1

@SetTheFaqUp: I understand that. And when I wanted to cancel early last time, and contacted Telstra for a payout figure they first quoted me the standard cancellation fee and then when I cancelled the service informed me that there was also a pro-rata early termination fee for the cash incentive amount. They said they weren't responsible for it, it was because of JB, which didn't really line up with me since they were the ones claiming it from me. Because they'd notified me in writing of my cancellation fee before I cancelled by my request and it didn't include that additional amount. I eventually bullied them into waiving it because of their miscommunication. But they'd been adamant I'd have to sort it out with JB.

But the wording of this one does say "minimum plan cost $95 over one month" not six as I'd assumed, so you'd probably be fine to cancel after the month with no additional fees. I assume if you tried to cancel within the month they'd give similar grief unless they just said no pro-rata refund of the month you've already paid for and left it at that.

                  • @Ryven: "there was also a pro-rata early termination fee for the cash incentive amount."

No idea what you have signed up for, but penalties are governed by what's written down.

    • That makes sense when you get the GC and Doorbell then and there while signing up, but if it's to be sent later then will need to wait, I often find myself going back and forth with the helpdesk to claim my goodies back.

lol 95 bucks a month for 500/50 I am on opticomm fibre (not nbn) FTTP and I get with superloop 85 bucks a month for 1000/100mbps connection. Telstra are a rip off.

      • +1

I agree that Telstra is too expensive but its not an Apples for Apples comparison. The speed does not factor in the ISP's network capacity, peering and CVC quantity. Cheaper ISP's are generally far less relaible and will consistently not hit their advertised speeds when compared to the likes of Telstra, Aussie Broadband etc. I have consitently found Superloop's speeds to be well under their advertised 1000/50 and now 1000/100 speeds.

        • i dont' know what superloop is like on NBN but I know on opticomm its perfect never drops i get full speed all the time any time of the day or night. the upload speed will sometimes even jump above 100mbps lol, which i find interesting.

          • @kungfuman: Spintel too. Been with them for years. Low ping and per advertised speed (often exceeds).

            • +1

@SetTheFaqUp: *only if you live in Sydney/near Sydney, as Spintel only has one PoP for the entire country. All the others have multiple PoP's in every state, making latency much better for anyone not close to the Sydney Spintel PoP.

          • @kungfuman: How much do you pay for superloop?
Do you have a link to the opticomm plan?
            Thanks

          • @kungfuman: Thanks for telling us you think apples are superior to bananas

        • When I was on superloop's 1000 plan, I always hit the full speeds and moreover now on thier 250/100 plan it always exceeds the advertised speed ALL THE TIMES. Telstra and Aussie broadband are over rated services. Especially when you can get next tier speeds at same or lower prices on superloop or other services, even if for some reason you hit 10% lower speeds, you are still above Telstra/AB's speeds.

Don't get the ring battery fyi, just not good enough quality compared to its peers nor longevity and continuous cost

    • +2

      What is better?

      • +14

I'm impressed with my Eufy one, does the job and no subscription fees

        • I wonder if we could get a eufy instead of this ring one

        • +1

Which model of Eufy though. And is it batter operated? Do tell

          • +1

            @neonlight: Sure,

Yes it is a battery one. Model is T8210C. It is a battery one as I think that's a good comparison to the deal in this thread. Battery ones will never be as good as mains powered but I've been impressed with the motion detection. I charge it maybe every 3 months?

            • +1

@thecloudking: I see thanks for that. I have eufy floodlight been thinking if I should get a doorbell or something to go along with it

        • Subscription based door camera 😂😭

          • +1

            @DeToxin: DaaS - doorbell as a service

          • @DeToxin: you can still use it as a video doorbell with no subscription.
ive been doing it for a few years now.

            • @Pest85: Is the subscription for holding recordings only or does it provide any other benefits?

              • +1

@Trishool: i believe its keeping the records as well as getting some notifications when a person come to your place but didnt press the call button.
also notifications about delivering packages, cars etc.

I have notification when someone press the button, can answer and have a conversation. I can also just check live video anytime. No subscription.

      • +3

I like the Google ecosystem of cameras, but it HAS to have a subscription otherwise it's kind of mid.

        • +1

I've been using my doorbell and camera without a sub for a while now. I feel like I'm just missing out on the continuous recording history?

        • HAS to have a subscription? Why? That's a deal breaker for me but may well be missing something.

        • Can the sub be bundled into other Google subs?

      • +3

        Eufy or Reolink
No subscription fees which is a huge win

      • +2

        Reolink

      • If you don’t need the software, an ESPHome video doorbell works well enough.
Open source, works with Home Assistant, and can actually have its features extended.

        • Do we need to build this? do you have links you can share

    • +1

      Tapo or Reolink

      • Reolink gets rave reviews

      • +1

I use Tapo and I'm happy with it.

      • I've been very happy with the Tapo D235.

I don't need cloud storage, just use a micro SD card.

      • Reolink is perfect if your running POE.

If you know what your doing you can setup a NVR on a computer or server and configure it how you like.

The Reolink app does playback etc if you have an SD card in them.

        Also dont need a subscription.

  • Curious if you can just reject the modem so you don't have something to return
Stay for 1 month and churn

    • +4

Yes I think you can opt out of the modem if signing up in store.

I also got a $100 JB hifi GC in last $1 deal which is a much better deal than this one!

      • +2

It’s the same deal. They increased the gift card offering because the per month is higher now

        • +2

Not quite, previous deal is an outlay of $1 for a $100 GC in return, vs this deal of spending $95 for $200 GC…

          • +2

@Craze: Yeh but in this deal you’re getting more JB gift card
            $99 vs $105

          • @Craze: Don't you also get Ring Doorbell ($149) with this deal (plus $200 giftcard) less $95 sign-up cost. So cancel after 1 month, one keeps Ring & Giftcard?

          • @Craze: Unless you absolutely can't afford the $95, I would say this is definitely a better deal.

      • +6

I also got a $100 JB hifi GC in last $1 deal which is a much better deal than this one!

damn, can’t believe that that wasn’t highlighted more or posted as a deal itself :(

        • I find gold nuggets are always in the comments!!

          • +1

            @Craze: indeed - i didn't check due to a 50% off 6mths offer

          • @Craze: U got any more nuggets. Ok I’ll keep on reading.

        • Yes I signed up to Telstra $1 and didn't get any GC. That was not in the last deal though. It was the year prior maybe where it was $2 for 2 months. I did not signup via JB just did it direct with Telstra that time.

    • +2

Signed up for a previous deal and was able to decline the modem.

    • Just tell them you ain't a charity and it will cost them $500 to take it to a post office or they can organise a courier to pick it up

    • I got this without a modem. Just asked.

  • Do they offer static ip?

    • +2

      Nope, but you get dynamic public IPv4 address + a /56 IPv6.

  • $61.66 per month after the $200
io wonder if they will even want the modem back, the gen 4 seems like a dud

    • +1

Last time I did that they definitely hit me up for the modem back. Luckily you could print a free mail label and return it that way.

      • -3

Did they charge you? In my experience, you can just ignore their requests for modem returns and I never got charged.

        • Did you mean to pay $200 for the modem and that’s why you didn’t return it?

          • -1

@lightfoot: No because they don't actually charge you the $200 for not returning the modem, at least in my experience.

      • Can't you just tell them to keep their stinky modem?

    • +1

It's $105 profit/month after the $200 if you stay connected for only 1 month.

  • +1

would you not just sign up for one month and then cancel, and just get $100 lol

  • +5

Tempted to churn for 1 month just for $200 JB. Winning? Sell the doorbell, decline the modem or just ship it back to Telstra unopened.

Hoping they don't cancel the JB GC but Telstra NBN is separate to the GC so unless Telstra notifies JB when you churn, it should mean "free" $100 JB GC? After paying Telstra the monthly bill.

    • +1

Yeah, we would benefit from previous like deals info. Would love to churn after a month -2 days.

    • +4

Just signed up at my local store. Doorbell and gift card was issued onsite after sign up. So far no caveat.

Not all stores have the brochure on display but they can check the system and it will show what are the promo criteria. Apparently I’m not the first one to sign it up and it maybe a popular deal in recent days.

It seems there’s a credit check in the process. And you can ask for a delayed activation and install as a new service instead of replacing existing service (on a 4-port NTD). Telstra should follow up with which port to plugin on activation.

Unfortunately I was told I must get the Telstra smart modem unless you have one already. Though you can return it to avoid the charge.

      • I was able to opt out of the modem there was a question in the wizard they had. Oh well just return it later.

        • Yup but the staff insisted. Probably they were trained differently.

          • @xmagic: You could of said you had it at home already

  • +1

Do you need to port out of your current NBN plan to sign up for this? Or can you just sign up for it separately? Planning to churn within the first month for the GC.

    • Sign up via JB instore and it should cancel your existing service. That is for HFC idk FTTP since I don't have it.

      • +2

ALWAYS best to contact your existing and let them know as their accounts systems won't necessarily know that you have moved. In turn the following month a bill is created.

      • +1

No ideally I want to keep my existing service, and also sign up for this Telstra deal just to get the gift card and then cancel it within a month.

If signing up for a new service auto cancels your old one then I guess that won't work.

        • How can you have 2 x NBN plans, as thought NBNco stopped that (using port 2 on box) unless you pay extra?

          • @Borg: I remember realising that the extra ports on the nbn box are for extra services and not like a router so maybe its possible, more meant for business stuff i think

            • +2

@phor8: You can definitely have two internet connections if you have a fttp ntd with multiple data ports on it. You need to explicitly state it to them and ask for them to use the uni-d port 2(or whichever you are not using.)

  • Anyone know if Telstra needs to input a pppoe password for HFC? Or is it just assigned ip

  • How hard is Telstra nbn to cancel? Can you do it online?
