Thanks for the deal. Good timing to cancel my Optus NBN!

  • +1

Am with SL, maybe time to give my 30days notice

  • +2

Just noticed ring doorbells flooding the fb marketplace. Word travels fast I guess 😂

  • +2

Thanks OP. Signed up too but my local JB will only issue GC and doorbell when my connection date is activated - so I’ll have to come back and collect it later

No issues in terms of “new customers” either as I did the $1 pan recently a few months ago too

    • Weird. I did future date and they gave me GC and Ring right away. I am set to churn next week.

      • +1

I wasn’t surprised about asking me to come back. Same thing happened when I did the $1 plan too

Could be that JB is following procedures

        • met the same, at last minute the guy recalled sth checked with someone then back said "must collect GC after NBN activated".
wow hope no drama after 1month.

      • +1

It's definitely YMMV and depends how well staff are trained from previous experience. I think people have abused previous deals (i.e. signing up, getting GC then contact Telstra directly to cancel) so new instructions are only to issue the goods post service activation.

        • +1

But then again your minimum cost is $95, which means regardless you cancelling, you'd have to pay that? right?

          • @lightfoot: The $95 first month gets paid immediately even if you don't activate straight away. So really they should give you the GC/goods.

            • +1

@FerreroRocher: Yeah, so it just your luck with the staff handling the case then.

            • +2

@FerreroRocher: There is an option to select "Telstra Bill: You’ll be charged for the first month on your next bill after you order. You’ll be charged ongoing on your monthly bill starting from the next bill after your service is connected.". You don't need to pay $95 straight away. you can pay when the order commences. I still got the GC and the door bell in-store after sign-up.

              • @croccer: The store I signed up with today insisted had to pick the "autopay" option instead of "Telstra bill" which deducted the $95 today even though I selected future date activation. But in the previous $1 deal it went through fine with "Telstra bill" option (you are only charged post service activation)- and that time I had to return to store to collect $100 GC.

                • @Craze: I guess the store you were in was trying to ensure you actually go through with the order. The store I signed up at asked me to come back and get the gift card and the doorbell after the service activation. I told them I was happy to do so if JB could give me an email saying they would provide me with the goodies after the order activation, as there is technically no contract in place between me and JB. They gave me the gift card and doorbell then and there. I had backdated my connection and had selected Telstra bill as the payment option well before the gift card and doorbell conversation.

    • I got the same experience in Canberra Belconnen today, will go back to get the GC and doorbell after activation. Had the choice not to have the modern though.

  • +3

Tried to get this at my local JB today but there was some kinda system error and it wouldn't work. It kept erroring out when the premium plan was selected for some reason.
    I guess im cursed.

    • +2

Same here, system error. Will have to check again tomorrow

      • same here, seems need an extra fee for hfc currently

        • Gor error this morning for the first time. The second try went through.

    • +1

Odd, but staff member fixed this by going to a computer with chrome instead of using edge. He said they were slowly removing chrome from their PC’s.

      • +1

Same, I went again today and Chrome was apparently the solution.
Also apparently you're not supposed to just get a giftcard instead of the doorbell camera and the guy at my JB instantly knew it was a Sydney store without me even telling him because apparently they're always breaking the rules.
The guy at my JB understandably didn't want to risk his job.

    • +1

I had the same experience today. First computer seemed to work (with Edge) right up to the final step, I've signed but post that would just go to main page. I received both sms and email confirming plan however PM their system status "ready to submit". Went through 3 times and the same results, changed two different consoles which just errored out at the plan selection page so we gave up.

I'll try again tomorrow at a different store and hopefully better luck!

  • Torn between this deal and amaysim!

    • +2

Amaysim requires me to pay $40, this deal is technically “free” :D
Good use for me later on to upgrade to a newer iPhone

  • +6

Just came back from my local JB in Sydney, can confirm:

    For Telstra NBN:
    - No lock in contract, can depart after a month.
    - Can set a later start date. I set mine to 24 Oct since I'm tied down for 30 days with Superloop.
    - $200 gift card issued on the spot. Can spend immediately (.. I did).
    - Ring doorbell picked up on the spot too. Issued as a gift card after signing up with Telstra.

I was already on a similarly priced NBN plan. So essentially received $349 value with no out-of-pocket costs - I think that's the bargain of the year for me!

    Many thanks OP

    • yes it really is! are you saying you were able to get a gift card value instead of the ring cam?

      • Not quite, to clarify, I received the $200 gift card as per the deal.

The Ring doorbell just happens to be issued as an 'Online Gift Card' as part of the deal, but the transaction is completely handled by JB staff for the doorbell.

  • +14

For those following along; signed up in store no issue, received $200 gift card and door bell on the spot, went straight to my next closest JB and returned door bell onto a $149 gift card. A month of 500/50 NBN and $349 of JB gift card for $95 out of pocket. Absolutely winning.

    • Were you provided a receipt for the doorbell separately?

      • +1

Yeah, and they even asked for my mobile to send it digitally.

        • Thanks for confirming that. The doorbell was backordered. I'll pick it up next week and I'll be asking for that receipt!

          • +2

@ja912son: I got refused at same store I did the signup at. I wasn't gonna travel far. Good on you. YMMV.

  • They didnt give me any receipts for the ring camera. Just handed the ring camera and gc out. Not sure if I can get the receipt for ring camera now as I wanna return it for $149.

    • Surely you’d need the receipt anyway for warranty reasons?

      • +2

Yeah called the store and they sent me the receipt via text after confirming few details. Thanks guys.

    • +1

Can you rephrase that question? It’s a bit confusing

  • Will it be too risky to set activation date on a Saturday with Telstra?

    • Yeap. Most won't do it on weekends. Ask them and see what they say.

  • Some of the comments on this post have made me lose faith in humanity.

    • +2

I'm sure JB knew what they were doing.

    • +2

You had faith to start with?

  • What id proofs they ask for.

Just wondering if i can request someone to go on my behalf?

    • +2

      driver license in my case

  • +2

Signed up, said no to the new modem, grabbed the $200 JB gift card, then swapped the Ring Doorbell for another $149 JB gift card — cheers OP 😁

    • I tried to do this but got refused. They know it was part of the bundle. Whatever will sell it elsewhere.

      • Same store or different? I am thinking of going to a different store to return it.

        • Same store. They asked straight up if it was part of the deal though before I even showed them a receipt.

  • Return transaction was at a different store

    • I couldn't be arsed / too far to travel for potential decline.

  • Anyone know if you can set the start date longer than 30 days in the future? I have 2 months left on my Black Friday Superloop deal from last year.

    • I've on the same deal from SL. I think I'll forgo my last month to jump on this.

      • Definitely worth it, but even better if I can save an extra 2 months.

Though even swapping straight to this deal now, it'll line up again for this year's BF deals.

    • +1

Signed up today and could select up to 23 Nov.

      • Where was this?
The max scheduled date given to me was 25th October.

        • Melbourne Central. For the $1 deal, I could only select one month in the future. Not sure why it was different this time.

  • Anyone having an issue actually getting their NBN connected? My free month with Buddy was ending today which worked out perfectly so when signing up yesterday asked to be connected today. Telstra app says there’s a delay with my activation?

    • I don't know whether this still applies, i recall a long time ago you may have needed to connect a Telstra modem for it to properly activate the first time

      • That was probably during ADSL times?

        • It was probably relevant then but i've read someone mention it on whirlpool sometime in the past few years. I was also with Telstra NBN about 2 years ago and their instructions were to connect the smart modem first for it to activate. Funnily i also recall reading someone connected their own router instead and had NBN but weren't getting billed, not sure how that ended up but i'm sure it would catch up to them at some point lol.

Anyway, i'm someone that likes to tinker with networking so when i was with Telstra swapping out other routers i'd occasionally not be able to get back online until i connected their smart modem to bring it back online. I could then switch back to one of my routers.

          • @johnnytran: Yeah, just been on chat and mentioned up to 10 days. Also looking on forums seems to be delays because of the VIOP component which they offer even though most of us don't want/need it.

Hence my comment below asking who has churned via this deal and how long.

          • @johnnytran: Ok. Good to know.

  • Anyone signed up and already active, how long did the churn take?

    • Might not help now but churn was under an hour for me from ABB

  • How long does it usually take to connect to the NBN? My address shows as eligible for FTTP connection. Does anyone have experience with the time frame?

  • +3

Thanks OP, got the $200 gift card and camera. Went 10km down the road to another jb hifi and returned the camera for a $149 gift card. Will be churning NBN again within a month. $349 for 40 mins all up

    • Any issues when you returned it?

    • +1

Update: I took it to a different store and returned it for a $149GC. No problems.
I don't think they do many of these NBN deals, so hence not familiar with the tricks

  • +3

Telstra cancelled and refunded me my $95 because they couldn’t guarantee I would have internet before Monday. I then signed up with amaysim for $40 and was connected in 5 minutes.

  • How long before connected if subscribed on same day?

  • +1

i went into JB hifi tonight there were lines of people waiting to do it…i value my time more than this deal. Also there were issues.

    • Ha, yeah word has got out via here so expect them to grow. :-)

  • -1

Canberra JBHiFi will not give out gift card and camera, unless in their system shows, Telsra NBN is connected. Asked people to come back later for gift card and camera, when porting get completed. Different state different experience. Yes, you can set connection date at later date.

  • Smooth signed up today, probably the best JB Hifi deal in recent years i reckoned…wonder if they allow 2 connections in 2 addresses in one account

    • i have 2 addresses .1 thats on telstra as phone nbn. so i activated mine at other address that doesnt have telstra on unid port 2 as to not lose wifes free superloop sbi connection that was already active on port 1. and wife activated her jb hi nbn at our other house that already had telstra nbn fttn and fttp vodafone in my name. we declined the modems and got sms within 30mins saying they havent detected a modem yet and to plug it into unid port 2. house 1 another isp port 1 and this telsra 500mbps are now both working. it was pretty fast to connect as both sites already had active connections we are both telstra mobile customers.. you need to remember tell jb hi staff you dont want to churn and loose your existing isp and to add it as a add on service so they activate another unid port other then port 1. got charged via our telstra accounts the $95 during sign up and given our $200 gift cards s. however have to go back to pick up the ring cameras as they had no stock. hopefully they will give us a receipt so we can return them later on unopened.. does anyone know how long they give on their return policy to return unopened items? thinking about getting another unid port 3 activated for this deal in my mothers name as her address only has fttn and i dont want her cut off her nbn phone plan. anyone try activating more than 2 ports on their ntd thats on fttp and more than once for the jb hi fi deal at the same address?

      • Your reply is very detailed but as someone with no knowledge of networking, if im already on telstra HFC nbn, is it as simple as going into the store and ask the staff to activate a new service on unid port 2 with my wifes name?
I just got refused in one store they say if its the same address, im not a new customer even if i put it on my wifes name.
I could go other store to try but im not sure if im telling them the right thing to do

        • What you asked for is correct. I was considering the same but perhaps you have answered what I was wondering i.e. could I sign up using a different port, using a different person at the same address. Based on what you noted, it's must be only one permitted per address.

        • Can you really have 2 UNI-D ports for HFC? I thought up to 4 ports for FTTP only. HFC is normally just 1 port. You will need a separate cable if you want another HFC connection.

  • PSA: Telstra don't do Opticomm it appears.

  • I wonder if you can schedule a churn in the future, then cancel it after you've received the GC and ring camera?

    • minimum 1 month $95 regardless anyway so might use then churn later

      • The 1 month does start (and you don't get billed) until your services starts.

    • Yeah, I already got the gift card and doorbell, the start date is in the future, so nothing is stopping me from cancelling the service before it even starts.

      • Were you able to pick Telstra bill option instead of autopay during sign up?

        • Yes. I even opted out of the Telstra modem so nothing to return.

  • Are you able to sign up to two service addresses with the same account to receive 2 x $200 gift cards?

    • Have done this with previous deal.

      • So that's a yes? I might sign up to another service in another address then.

    • +1

      Yes

  • I am with more telecom. I signed up with the commbank 40
Per cent off plan a year ago and so are paying $69 a month for 750/40. This runs out on October 8. So if I signed up with Telstra does that automatically churn and cancel the service or do I have to call More? I know I cancelled with them before and they took a lot of convincing to allow me to close the account. I just don’t want to end up with two nbn services.

    • +1

Set-up your cancellation date via your online account on more tel.
They'll call you then two or three times to try to get you to stay - but otherwise, your more nbn will get disconnected on the day that you've selected.
No prorata refund so best to cancel on your last day of your billed period.

    • Thought the CommBank Yello discount for MoreTelecom is 3 years? Assuming you want to transfer to Telstra, put in your NBN AVC ID.
If you need an excuse to leave MoreTelecom, for now, tell them you need IPv6 for your Matter smart home devices. MoreTelecom doesn't support IPv6 at the moment. MoreTelecom is slow (because they essentially use Vocus infrastructure) so better to let them know you are cancelling.
