with the 1/4" you get a 6.35mm sized ratchet but you get phillips slot and hex bits

with the 3/8" you get a 9.5mm sized ratched but no screwdriver bits

    your choice

would larger be better for most uses? and you should shitloads of driver bits anyway

  • Which one works well for cars? Sorry for noob question

    • -2

i think this is realistically both are bullshit toy sets that is fine for changing batteries and VERY basic shit ie. emergency kit

      i'd get the larger one

      but lifetime warranty i guess?

      • Thanks mate

      • I don't know why the down votes?

I would not want smaller than 1/2" for working on cars for the basic at home DIY stuff.

    • +1

probably 3/8. 1/4 is smallest, 3/8 is medium and 1/2 is large

    • +1

3/8. I have 1/4 and 3/8 and have used the 1/4 5 times in 20 years. Very good to have when you need it. I paid $80 for it 20 years ago.

    • +3

Very loose rule of thumb, 1/4 for interior stuff and other light duty, 3/8 for body and general use, 1/2 for suspension and heavier duty.

      • +2

You really don't need 1/4 unless you are doing light stuff all day, just use the 3/8 for everything. On the odd occasion you need a smaller handle just make do with a spanner

    • I use my 1/4 mainly for the ride on and other garden equipment. So if you get handy on small plant machinery the 1/4 goes good

  • +1

Thanks OP, bought one of each.

  • Bought

  • -3

    Free delivery too

    • +3

      How?

    • +2

$6 deliver for me. i can't be bothered

  • You just know when they don't mention ratchet tooth count it's going to be very low.

    • Got plenty of ratchets. I got these because it's in EVA foam and I can just put it in a tray of a tool chest

    • -1

I'm wondering how sidchrome can do this so cheap? I suspect it's chinesium

      • this is 'new age' sidchrome which is of course chinesium

BUT i mean if you manage to break a socket… lifetime warranty but total tools have proved to be 'total tools' in that regard

        • Yes, warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on if the company tells you to go pound sand.

I bought the bahco 1/4 set a while ago because it has the extension driver that allows the ratchet to connect to it. Most small bolts you only crack open with a ratchet, then use the extension to fully undo it. It's nice using a driver with grip instead of an extension bar

          • @gfjh567gh3: I ordered the 3/8 set :) $20 for 12 point sockets up to 19mm is a good price, they're borderline consumables (especially when working on American cars). I have Gold membership so free delivery, order hasn't been cancelled yet

    • +4

Although this deal has expired, I'm posting in case there's another one in the future.

Both the 3/8" ratchet and the 1/4" have 72 teeth (5º per click).

The product codes are SCMT31435 for the 1/4" set, and SCMT31327 for the 3/8".

The codes on the ratchets are 34900 for the 1/4", and 33900 for the 3/8".

I'm not an expert, but for $20 I'm pretty happy with them.

      • Not bad at all then

  • Just got a set to live in the car.

  • Perfect thanks op. Needed a new 1/4 set

  • Buy both and works out 8c cheaper than Bunnings deal lol :P

    • which one does bunnings sell i cannot find it? just as i have a local bunnings to me compared to a totals tool

    • Bunnings had a 1/2" set, I can't find it on this site, I can't even find the 2 linked ones when I search, only thing I can think of is its because I haven't set location

  • +3

Travel case for these if you're interested: https://www.bunnings.com.au/sidchrome-blow-mould-tool-storag…

  • +1

    Bought the 3/8" set + $6.15 delivery.

    Done. 👍

  • +4

What did I buy at Bunnings? Do I need these too?

    • Hahahaha I'm only scrolling comments for this answer

      • +1

        Seems we got the

        Sidchrome 1/4" & 3/8" Metric Custom Kit Socket Set - 62 Piece for $39.98

  • ahhhh I wish those 3/8 metrics are 6-point!

  • +1

All in Brisbane say special order only!

    • Placed an order on both sets. Lets see what happens.

  • +1

total tools is getting ozbargained. The website is slow AF. The order kept adding postage for some reason even though click and collect was selected however it only charged the correct amount without postage for click and collect.

    • +1

      both item pages 404

you guys are buying shit you dont need again

    • Their website is Flash heavy (or other system, I'm no expert), like Supercheap Auto. It sucks at the best of times. However, their catalogue is excellent and you can make a wishlist, so I can't complain too much

  • this strong enough to use with 3/8 impact wrench?

    • Considering its Sidchrome at this price, I doubt you can use them as an impact socket in the long term. For one-time occasions, probably.

You can buy Milwaukee Mid Torques with 3/8" anvils, sending 881NM through these repeatedly would very quickly shatter them I reckon.

    • 3/8 impact driver will destroy them at the square end.

Get a Chromium-molybdenum socket set for impact drivers

      • thanks for the tip, any suggestions on a deal for a poor person?

        • Not really.
Total tools and Sydney tools sometimes have them on clearance but they generally start at $80 for tti, $85 for kinchrome 10pc, $130 for 20pc etc…

          • @PlaunsJanus: dang, was hoping to get something close to the $20 mark, lol. i knew it would be too good to be true. thanks for your help mate.

            • @Hugh G Rection: They've had clearances on those kind of sets before, for about $30. Keep an eye out

I use regular chrome vanadium in my 12v gear in a pinch but impact drivers generally destroy them over time

    • +1

Sounds like 3/8 are 12 point. That’s a big no no for an impact wrench.

Realistically you want the “non shiny black” sockets aka chrome moly as mentioned above. Also I would probably skip 3/8 for impact wrench and go 1/2 as there will be many more sockets sets made for impact in this size

    • Oh boy, you’re gonna have a bad time with that, you can get the home brand cheap 6 point impact sockets from total tools. I got a set for like $15 a few years ago (1/2 drive) and honestly they’ve been fine for any job I’ve thrown at them.

  • Seems suspiciously cheap. How do these drivers compare to supercheap auto tool pro range?

  • s this the same as the bunnings deal the other week?

  • Thanks OP

  • -1

Sidchrome are Chinese now aren't they?

You can get a 40 piece socket set from Bunnings for $10, is Sidchrome that much better these days? https://www.bunnings.com.au/craftright-1-4-3-8-drive-socket-…

    • +5

As much as people rag on Sidchrome, if their current quality is on par with that terrible Craftright set, they would have already gone out of business.

    • +4

Sidchrome might not be what it used to be but still 100 times better than Craftright

    • +3

Sidchrome is owned by Stanley since 1991 and made in Taiwan.

  • -4

Sidcrome ain't what quality it used to me.

  • Items are gone from the website now? 404

  • all gone, 404 error

  • Error code: 404

  • oos

  • Items show up when searched for but clicking them give page not found.

  • Must be sold out both links not working

  • 1/4" set is available again

  • Everything still up for me. Both sets. Adelaide

  • +2

    Both back in stock

  • +1

    Bought both. Thanks OP

  • Thanks OP, purchased both to match my Bunnings sets, foam inserts alone are priced the same :)

    • +1

I think these 2 combined are literally the same as the 62 piece you got from bunnings right?

      • +1

Not quite, both the sets from Bunnings were purely metric. That said, the two sets in this deal are nearly a perfect match to the 62 piece set from Bunnings.

        • You mean match as in good pairing? I missed the 62 piece from bunnings but got the 21 piece. Got both of these sets (hopefully) I should be covered fairly well now?

          • @Phesto: If you search for “Sidchrome SCMT31462” and compare the sockets to the ones that were on sale here you’ll see they are very similar. I think “perfect match” was the wrong term to use. I’m sure the sets you bought will be able to fulfill the same purpose

  • Why do I need these? Or is it just my own FOMO?

    • Keep the 1/4 in your car just in case.

      • Damn I got other size for the car.

        • Both will work, but I think the 1/4 is smaller, so easier to store.

  • Bought both thanks OP, NOW what do I do with them

  • +1

Aww shit here we go again. Inb4 orders get “isolated” 😂

  • No delivery to or pickup from any SE Qld locations for me

  • Bought both. Thanks OP

  • +2

    Pulled both links

  • -4

    Bought 12 of each set

  • +4

    404 error geelong

  • +6

    404 error for me

  • +1

    Surely a pricing error?

  • This or kinchrome?

  • Thanks OP
    Grabbed both sets.
Tks for the recommendations from other posters for cases also

  • Store just called, on-route to store will be 3-4 days but order is good.

  • Both in stock for Mt Barker, SA

  • Just tried again this morning and was able to order the 3/8 set initially, and after a couple of refreshes, ordered the 1/4" drive set, for delivery. See if it goes ahead.
