Friction Fighter, genius marketing for Semi-Synthetic 😅

    • +1

hahaha… I know, a little spew came up reading that marketing rubbish.

But cheap 5w30 oil for my i30… I'm not spending $60 for 5L

        i30 asks for Semi-synth? interesting

Gulf Western has full synthetics at $23-30 right now, the $30 one being SP certified too.

Whehe did you see such a deal?

        • +2

          It's $41.99, not $23-30

          • @gguu: All depends on what you need, i grabbed some Gulf Western semi synthetic15w-40 5L for $23.99 yesterday.

            • @CheapGit: Funnily enough you probably grabbed a full synthetic, SCA has it incorrectly listed on their website as semi-synthetic since its auto-filled from the Silver Gulf Westerns.

          • @gguu: The 15w40 is $24 and 10w30 is ~$30. Most vehicles specced for the likes of 5w30 would do slightly better on these in most of Australia since it never gets particularly cold here like it can in much of the US/Europe where these engines are specced for.

            • @TrulyUnicorn: You are correct regarding the overall suitability of these oils for 5W30 engines in most cases. However, you mentioned that full synthetic oils were on $23-30 sale, and I simply asked about the location of this deal.

    • Where?

      • -1

Supercheap Auto, their gold lineup for 15w40 and 10w30 are $24/$31 respectively. The 10w30 has the more up to date SP certification though, bear in mind the SCA website incorrectly lists them as semi-synthetic since they filled the data from the wrong product.

        • I could be wrong but I think GW market their oil as Synthetic and Fully Synthetic, with the former being semi-syn?

        • Sorry pal but they are correctly listed. If a Gulf Western says 'synthetic' then it isn't fully synthetic, it has to say 'full synthetic' for it to be fully synthetic, that's Gulf Western for ya. They don't put 'semi' on any of their engine oils.

Go to this link www.gulfwestern.com.au/product-category/passenger-vehicles/ and click on each oil and then click on the MSDS link, the ones that say 'fully synthetic' on the front will say something like 'Synthetic petroleum distillates' in the ingredient list, the 'synthetic' labelled ones don't say that. Just compare their 5w-30s and 5w-40s to their 10w-30, 10w-40 and 15w-40.

The 15w-40 you mentioned is: 'Severely refined mineral oils'
The 10w-30 is 'Severely hydrotreated oils'

  • Good deal for people who drive semis
