Cheapcheaplah seems like a clear failure, I wonder why do they still keep putting up new deals on it?

          • @truetypezk: I wonder why? Singaporeans not known for sharing?

    • This is the reason why I am (profanity) disappointed in Qantas' call to install wifi on its A380 and B789 fleets.

I am expecting an email from work that I will be expected to work when flying.

      • +1

        Get cracking.

  • +5

Currently have my Virgin velocity linked to my booking but thinking I should swap for KrisFlyer.
Is consensus that it won’t be free unless KrisFlyer is on booking?

    • +1

Same boat here. Cant seem to add both, and I'd like to get the points/status credits with Velocity but 21+ hours having free wifi is a big drawcard.

      • +3

It’s pretty average , I just flew business to Europe on A350s and couldn’t do much more than send SMS. Add 200 more users and it will be even worse. I’d take the velocity points

      • The status credits are worth way more than the cost of wifi

    • +1

That's correct, didn't work for me last yr with Velocity linked when they had 200 mb free for KrisFlyers.

      • Same didnt work for me in April this year when i had velocity linked to my booking.

    • +2

I spoke to check-in staff during my last trip. They said SQ allows 2 Frequent flyer programs to be on the booking, provided one of them is Krisflyer.
They apparently have a field for point accrual and another for privilege.

So you can technically put VFF as the accrual and Krisflyer to the other to get free wi-fi.
But say you're a VFF upper status member and looking to use the lounge, then you'd have to use VFF only as otherwise you can't get the lounge/priority benefits.
This was my case. So I had to forego complimentary wi-fi.

    • +1

Nah, you just need your KrisFlyer login to access the wifi

  • +8

Time for QF to have wifi on international flights too.

    • Don't they?

      • -1

        More difficult across the Pacific.

        • +2

          Why? Aren't there enough satellites?

          • @jv: And they can’t use terrestrial backup.

          • +18

@jv: They use the NBN Sky Muster satellites, which are geostationary over Aus. As a result, when you move out of Aus, you lose the signal and can't talk to those satellites any more.

They could use other satellites but not get the same awesome speeds they do over land, and would possibly require hardware changes.

(source, I was on the wifi team when it launched domestically)

They've got partnerships with Viasat and I expect will take advantage of Viasat 3 for Project Sunrise etc.

Yes, looks like that's still the plan.

"Joyce reiterated the airline had held back on international WiFi because current satellites didn’t offer the speed or coverage needed to meet passenger expectations, especially in comparison to its domestic offering."

            • @beatthatflight: Bit of a bummer if you're flying to the USA or Europe then when most of your flight is out of Australia.

      • Only for the portion of the flight that's within/near Australia.

My KrisFlyer lapsed. They cannot reactivate accounts, and require a new email address and mobile number to create a new account. Email isn't a problem, but I'm not a drug dealer, so I don't know how they expect me to have a second mobile number.

    • +10

It's easy - become a drug dealer. So many phone numbers!

Search “Boost profit” and get a 30 day SIM delivered plus >100% cash back.

      • +2

I ended up joining again with my dad's number. It's a ridiculous requirement though.

        • +4

You might be able to change the number to the one you want now that you've signed up.
Bit silly that they can't reactivate an old account though.

          • +1

@SeaWolf au: That worked! I don't understand why they require a unique mobile number at sign up, but then don't care if it isn't unique to the account later.

    • +1

Is there a way to avoid membership lapsing if you don't fly SQ?

      • +1

        Start flying SQ

      • +2

A KrisFlyer membership account with no recorded activity for a consecutive period of 39 months or more from the date of the last recorded activity may be closed without prior notice. A KrisFlyer membership account with no recorded activity for a consecutive period of 18 months or more from the date of commencement of membership may also be closed.

        Seems a bit rough.

I don't mind (that much) if they expire your points but to cancel your membership and not let you re-join!?

      • +1

Weird. I haven't being on SQ for more than 5 years and still have my KF account - with 0 points. Just login and see my last login was in 2021.

        • The act of "logging in" may well count as activity. It's likely the other guy basically did absolutely nothing with the account. Not logging in. Not accumulating/spending any points. Nothing.

  • +7

Just means it'll be slow for everyone, to the point of being unusable.

The speeds have been unbearably slow in business class after SQ switched to unlimited wifi for premium cabins, so this will make it worse.

    • That's true I read this as a pain just gonna fly in biz cabin in Oct with them.

    • +1

Yep my thoughts too, both Suites and business class IME have been patchy as recently as March. Unless they differentiate users like they do at some hotels, this is a big negative for business/suites travellers.

    • Can confirm, speed was pretty good. I flew from BNE to FRA 1st week of June in Business, and flew back yesterday in first (except the SIN to BNE leg which doesn't have first class). Perfect connectivity, no slow downs for using any of my social media apps (including uploading videos/pictures on Instagram, FB). Web surfing worked perfectly. Could work on Google suites without any problem. Spotify streaming worked as well. You don't have any internet while you over Indian air space though, as their govt. body regulations/tie ups doesn't allow the service. Had perfect reception through the rest of the flight minus take off and landing windows.

    • +1

Agree, I just flew A350s business to Europe and it was horrendous.

    watch porn in airplane

    • +4

Tinder/Grindr on plane is more fun!

      • +2

Match with someone on flight and meet in the restroom

        • +1

Damn it! I missed this opportunity. But I bet Tinder would tell me I have 15 likes 20,000 feet in the air, and buying Tinder plus will be an instant pass to the mile high club…… 😶

        • And create in-air turbulence.

    • +1

      user name checks out.

  • +1

Used it in June, unlimited over to Europe.
Ok for whatsapp/surfing/emails. Not so much for my VPN work.
My work VPN halts/crashes ANYTIME there is ANY interruption to the connection. Lag was horrible as well.

    • Yeah satellite internet with 200 other passengers wasn't ever going to be the greatest.

When I tried a wireguard tunnel it didn't outright crash, but there were periods where there would be almost no traffic flow.

  • whos kris flyer?

    • +6

She's the matriarch of Kylie Flyer and Kim Flyer. Used to be married to Caitlyn but she was a high jumper and polevolter, never a flyer

  • +1

Sweet, will be nice for my flight back from Europe in October. Doubt it'll be usable for anything more than some emails and light social media though, if it's free for basically everyone.

  • +3

    Torrent from the skies

    • +7

It's not illegal when you are over international waters!

  • -2

This is a cynical move that lets SQ to market their flights as free wifi for all, while in practice, it'll mean unusable wifi for everyone.

    • +3

One person's cynicism is another person's welcome benefit.

I'm sure all of us KF members sitting up the back won't give a tinker's cuss about what is happening at the front.

    • +1

the alternative is we don't have wifi on plane… so this is still better.

  • On a different topic dose anyone know the best way to get krisflyer points. I need to book a flight next month and dont want to pay full price.

    • sign up for points earning credit cards…although if you need to fly next month, you won't be able to get your points in time.

another option if you're a few thousand miles short is to purchase the miles from SQ

      • I have 2 credit cards but one is only qantas the other has horrific value if transferring to Krisflyer. Any recommendations on which card is a good option?

        • You can use Velocity points to book Singapore Airlines flights, so you may be better off with a Velocity points earnings card.

          • @Sim69: better value to transfer directly to Singapore than booking through Velocity. Though Krisflyer transfer rates seem to be dropping so maybe not for long.

        • I’d recommend the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Signature card or Bank of SA in your case. It’s a 2:1 transfer ratio to Krisflyer. I heard though that this ratio might change soon and may not be as worthwhile if it does.

    • +1

I’m flying in September and just got a HSBC star alliance credit card. Fee free for first year and you get gold status if you spend $4000 in 3 months. You can link your krisflyer to this and you’ll be promoted to KrisFlyer gold so lounge access and priority seats, check-in, boarding and stuff included. Not sure if this suits your need.

    • Citi Premier credit card is the best way to earn KF miles at the moment.

  • I bet they're collecting and selling data on what people are doing on the net while in the air.

Very handy to offset the cost and useful for their marketing team.

    • +1

Wait, you dont know about VPN? Did you need a referral?

      • +1

I do but I bet 99% of flyers don't use it.

  • Has anyone done a speedtest.net aeroplane Wi-Fi? How does it compare against other airlines?

  • OH WOW HOW EXCITING THANKS SO MUCH SINGAPORE

  • how much is it to join krisflyer?

  • +1

    I sleep during flights anyway

  • will test this out next week and report back. Now I just need some discount disneyland offer like the universal studio one afew weeks ago.

  • +4

I just came off a 16 hour flight from Copenhagen to Singapore using this. Our flight departed from CPH around noon the 30/6 but it seems the free access was enabled a bit early.

It's okay (is anything free bad?) but I feel like the speed was A LOT slower today (top of 3/2 Mbps d/u) than on the way here, five weeks ago. It also dropped off alot and latency was always +900ms.

When we left on Friday the 26th of May, even the shorter 6hr flight, CNS to SIN, had great internet. For that one my wife and I just used the complimentary 2-hour vouchers - Between 5-12 Mbps dl and stable. And upload touched 20 Mbps a few times.

I paid to have WiFi for the 16hrs from SIN to CPH, so expected it to better than the free option, but it was about the same.

I was in an hour-long Zoom meeting at an altitude of 12km, four hours out from Copenhagen… And it was great! No stuttering or any of the other issues which sometimes happen with satellite, or even cellular. Mind you, I had to connect via VPN for Zoom and other streaming services to work at all (even speedtest.net ), but then it was awesome.

But now? I probably wouldn't even attempt it…

I'll update if wifi for the next flight (in about an hour) turns out any better.

  • took china eastern few days ago and free wifi was only for 10 mins…

    • -3

Good enough to send a last message to your family before being arbitrarily detained in the PRC

    • Ten minutes was long enough for me to realise pretty much every website was blocked.

  • Sounds like great news but the SQ flight I was on last week only had weak and slow (free) wifi for an hour out of a 5.5 hour flight. So YMMV

    • From where to where?

  • This complimentary offer is complementary with all internet enabled devices

  • -4

is this joke why would I fly to get internet my home connection is fine thx

  • Literally on a flight now from Singapore to Tokyo. Not too bad and passes the time nicely

    • Nice, do you have to use a VPN to access OzB?

      • Nope no VPN is needed. Speed is just okay for some online games like chess and reddit.

  • -2

Can't upvote on this so commenting so I can feel remember

  • Can we use this for already booked flights?

    • +2

Yes as you can add a KrisFlyer number via the manage booking option on the Singapore app or website

      • We are flying with SIA in June. Although the tickets are Velocity reward tickets. Wonder if would be able to add Krisflyer number to the booking.

        • +1

You definitely can add a krisflyer after a virgin booking by going to the Singapore site (which I do to pick seats for my virgin bookings) the only reason you wouldn’t do it would be if you wanted lounge access with virgin status , I’m not sure if that would get wiped as you’re on a KrisFlyer number ? Maybe someone else knows

          • @Capitalshark: Thank you. I don't have gold status so missing out on the lounge is not an issue.

      • +1

The name on the KrisFlyer account has to match the ticket, of course.

Don't fat finger the name on your account like I did. (Or you'll have to contact support.)

  • +3

    @mods
"Voting not allowed on deals posted over 180 days ago" -> If a deal can be "reposted" and features on OzB's homepage, then surely an upvote should be possible?

    • I agree. We should be able to thank the OP for deals that keep on giving.

  • +1

    Does scoot qualify

  • Its mostly for messaging and light browsing and it wont be consistent fyi. speed is ok but the main issue is dropouts

  • Perfect for joining the half mile high club.
