UPDATE 29 Aug — while the coupon code "WSAU2925" (15% off) no longer works, you can still use code "TELEVIP" to get 10% off which comes down to $1,121.40.

Credit to where credit is due — thanks to hachiroku who posted it in the forums. ThinkPad X1 Carbon — the "World's Lightest 14inch Business-Class Ultrabook" is $1,059.10 delivered with a bit of trick.

  • Go to ThinkPad X1 Carbon's page
  • Click on the middle option at $1719
  • Under Base, change
    • from "Intel HD 4000 Graphics in Intel Core i5-3427U Processor with 8GB 1333MHz DDR3L On Board"
    • to "Intel HD 4000 Graphics in Intel Core i5-3427U Processor with 4GB 1333MHz DDR3L On Board" [subtract AU$352.00] — which makes it $1246.00
  • Use coupon code WSAU2925 to bring down the total cost to $1059.10

What you get is this carbon fibre 14" ultrabook with:

  • Intel Core i5-3427U Processor
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
  • 14.0" Premium HD+ (1600x900) LED Backlit Display
  • 4GB PC3-10600 DDR3L
  • 128GB Solid State Drive
  • Integrated mobile broadband
  • Less than 1.4kg

The problem though, however, is that the RAM is soldered on so would not be possible to upgrade later (like most ultrabooks). And the step to downgrade from 8GB to 4GB to take away $352 — not sure whether it's a cart issue and how long would take Lenovo to patch it…

  • Looking at my order status it is now 'Cancelled'… but no-one called me nor have they refunded my direct deposit yet

Pricing error is not a deal, and yet halfway Bait and Switch already. From not honouring Lenovo is saying that "Thx for the order, but I'll check it with my boss first" for every online order.

I missed out on the deal, but I feel for those who didn't and Lenovo shouldn't get free lunch in either. Negged.

    Update-
I got a call from fair trading today rearding my complaint. They said they have only recvd 2 complaints so far but were quick to take an action with Lenovo. They asked me to call Lenovo and talk to their customer service on a special number and hopefully lenovo will be honouring the sale. Now i am just waiting for lenovo to come back to me as i have already spoken to their customer service. So good news fr everyone is that if more ppl complain to Fair Trading, we might win…

    • Thanks for the update. Only a couple of people made a proper complaint to Fair Trading?

      • Thanks Umar for the update and fighting the good fight!

I admit I still haven't had the time to send any correspondence (lots of work!!!). Plan is this weekend. Fair Trading is also state based, so there may have been some other members here that have lodged, but just not in the same state as Umar. Which state are you in Umar? Also, what's the special Customer service number?

I've just checked my online credit card balance and it appears Lenovo are still holding onto my money despite the final cancellation e-mail. That has got to be a big no-no!

Done: Submitted to both ACCC and Consumer Affairs Vic. It was so much more work to submit to Consumer Affair Vic (Fair Trading) than ACCC!

        • Hi Tanoshiiki,
I am from NSW but i believe Fair Trading complaint applies to all States as this was a National Sale and not for a single state. Please note that I was very disappointed that only 2 people submitted a formal complaint which was not I expected. I think not people are interested to get what they paid for. It sounded like Fair Trading took a strict action against Lenovo as when i got the call from Fair Trading, my case officer had already spoken with Lenovo Customer Service head. Therefore i would advise everyone here who made the purchase to email Fair Trading and ACCC so they can actually see a pattern by Lenovo. Please i request everyone here to put in a complaint as soon as possible and wait for Fair Trading to call you and give you the details to contact the specified person at Lenovo.
          Regards,

        • I only did with ACCC, does fair trading has more power?

        • It appears that Fair Trading organisations differs from state to state.

        • i just submited the complaint form on fairtraind website. been very busy last 2 weeks.

        • Umar and hachiroku, did you use this site http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or is there a national fair trading site?

        • Yes, I used the same site as you hachiroku.

        • I send to fairtrading just now :)$1059.10~~~~

    • Thanks Umar511986,I use your template made complaints to both ACCC and fair Trading NSW

  • Looks like on Lenovo site, there is no more 8gb ram option on three models of X1 carbon anymore. All come with 4Gb ram only…

  • Finally received a call from Lenovo today. Same old not willing to honour the price, which he said had been checked with Legal and Management, etc and could only offer the model at $13xx.xx. I said, At this price, I would not be willing to continue the transaction.

I notified them that I had told them that I had lodged with Fair Trading and ACCC. There's not much we can really do except wait. My current computer still runs at the moment…

I did forget to ask about about my credit card charge which was still being withheld…

    • Too late to edit, so replying to my own post. Looks like my credit card charges have now been reversed.

Did anyone here buy this model with the 8GB RAM?
I guess Lenovo wouldn't deliver that, either. Looks like they have dropped it for the moment.

I think its a very poor marketing move by Lenovo, to make sales, cancel the sales and then even cancel the model with 8GB RAM.

  • Did anyone else get a call from Consumer Affairs Vic? They basically said they couldn't do anything about it because based on Lenovo's Order Confirmation, it appears that a contract has not been entered into. The advice was that I could take it to VCAT (to verify entering into a contract), but even then there would be a slim case.

I have not heard anything from ACCC.

Good luck to those going through NSW Fair Trading.

    • i got a call from consumer affairs aswell, they said same story.
