  • Good for a phone backup if you're not keen on the cloud!

    • +1

Can it backup and iPhone? Also it’s 4% off 😂

      • Perhaps the next model of iPhone as it is rumoured to have USB-C. It also depends on whether Apple will allow third party access to the USB-C port for data too as they may introduce a Mfi chip for data and high speed charging.

        • -2

Off topic but I doubt they'll go with USB-C. Probably Magsafe only.

          • -1

            @ritzaus: USB-C is on iPads

            • -2

@pinkybrain: Lol yes. But that doesn't mean they will go with USB-C on iPhones. Sorry to have started this :)

              • -1

@ritzaus: yeah need to buy a $US50 charger for an iPhone and you think the EU will allow this to happen

                lol sure buddy

                • -1

@Freestyle: Lol why so serious? Read what they said…they only have to go with USB-c if they have wired charging capabilities. Apple isn't stupid.

            • +3

@PainToad: Nothing stopping them from including Magsafe alongside USB-C

            • +8

@PainToad: Ah yes of course innovative apple and their current lightning cables with blazing fast 50MB/s transfer speeds https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/file-transfer-speed-tes…

Regular updates: the Commission will be empowered to adopt delegated acts
amending the list and the technical specifications in light of scientific and technological
progress or market developments, to improve consumer convenience, avoid market
fragmentation and reduce environmental waste. It will also be required to continuously
assess whether adding other devices to this list would significantly improve consumer
convenience and reduce environmental waste. The first report on this assessment is due
by the end of 2025, and every five years afterwards (Article 3

Yeah, because politicians sure are the best people to be making those decisions. So much experience.

@PainToad: You're speaking out in defence of a company that has been using the same outdated connector for 11 years.

It's faster to transfer data off a 2023 Iphone via wifi than use a cable.

                  • -2

@OZKap: I’m not defending Apple at all. Just saying politicians limiting innovation isn’t the answer.

If people really wanted a USB C connector, they would eventually stop buying iPhones. This would have forced Apple’s hand to either add USB C (or something even better). That’s how free markets work. Supply and demand. Not government dictated demands.

What if the EU had added this rule earlier and enforced Micro-USB? USB C might have never took off because it would have been too much hassle having to lobby the EU to update the standard they deem acceptable.

                    • @PainToad: Not response, just down votes. Didn’t have any actual counter arguments to make I guess. Keep drinking the EU big government cool aid.

                    • @PainToad:

If people really wanted a USB C connector, they would eventually stop buying iPhones.

This is precisely the problem - people didn't want the USB C connector enough to stop buying the iPhone.
The ewaste problem from phones/chargers/cables is absolutely massive - just the unused cables alone contribute over 10,000 tons of ewaste annually in the EU.

This would have forced Apple’s hand to either add USB C (or something even better).

In this case the free market didn't work - the ewaste problem just got bigger and bigger. Hence the regulation.

                      That’s how free markets work.

"Free markets" often don't work, this is one example of many.

Supply and demand. Not government dictated demands.

Not government dictated demands ? How else do you prevent the harm that the free market didn't halt ?

What if the EU had added this rule earlier and enforced Micro-USB?

They might have been able to get a handle on the waste problem a little sooner.
You obviously haven't read the act - there's plenty of provision for changing and updating the standard, and we'll get to see how that works when a USB C successor arrives.

                  • @OZKap: Not an Apple fan at all but they have smart reasons for doing things like this.

            • +2

@PainToad: Mate get off your knees, Tim's not going to be offering you any discounts for your valiant defense of all things Apple online.

            • @PainToad: hows the boot taste

        • +1

Wishful rumours, not a chance Apple will change its business model from "keep 'em locked into our devices", that has worked for over a decade.

      • No idea! Use it to backup my Galaxy though

      • You can buy dongles for that already for an iPhone.

Not to back up an iPhone completely however. Which still won’t change when they’re forced to change to usb C.

The downside for me with that change is that I’ll have to buy more USB C cables and throw my old Lightning cables in landfill, after the customary 5 years of having them lay around unused taking up space just in case haha.

I don’t think it’ll have any impact good or bad on how I use my iPhone other than that though.
I guess on the rare occasion that someone visits my house who has an Android, they’ll be more accommodated by my charging options haha. But I think I have 1 friend still on Android haha

      • With a USBc to lightning dongle, yes.

    • How long would that take to backup?

      • Takes a few hours for my 190GB phones full backup using the Samsung smart switch app

  • +1

Got this. It's great for everything with a small caveat. I purchased it for my S22 Ultra. With most phone cases on, you haven't a hope of getting it into the USB-C port. Guess there is always those tiny USB-C extensions and so on, but still.

  • Should we wait for prime day

    • +1

If you don't need it, good to wait regardless…

    • Yes, current deal is only 4% off

  • +1

The only thing I hate about this is the cap, easy to misplace.

    • +3

      store the cap
      never use it again
      never lose it

      • ie cap is useless

    • Yeah the cap does get loose after a while.

I had mine attached to my car keys and unfortunately I lost it one day. I'm not sure if it managed to work its way off the keyring or if the thumb drive broke where the eyelet is. I tried to make do with an older slower thumb drive for a while but soon purchased a new one as the transfer speeds simply don't compare.

    • +1

I got some cheap lanyards from eBay to try and avoid this from happening

    • Loose caps on USB sticks are so… 2005.

  • Good as main OS drive?

    • +3

      Maybe for Tails.

      • +2

Definitely not fast enough for Sonic

    • Comparable to 2010 SSD. Likely no trim, and 4K read ~10mbps

  • Can use this on Oppop X5 Lite?

    • Claims to be 3-4 times faster than the Sandisk.

      • Ah thanks! I ended up going with the Sandisk though cos I had an amazon prime promo for -AUD4.31 + a $10 off first app purchase.

    • usb 3.1 vs old usb3.0

      • usb 3.0 was just renamed to usb 3.1 Gen1 ~ there's no difference. The only time there is a difference is USB 3.1 Gen2
