PS: These has replaceable batteries for anyone wondering and works with Google's 'Find My Device' App

    Also available in:

  • How does it work? Do Android phones report when they see it or what?
I suspect location would be updated only when someone with the app is nearby

    • +1

It uses the Google Find My network so I would guess any Android phone would provide location info, regardless of having the app.

      • +3

I had four of the previous generation of Chipolos (three round ones like this and a card). And even though I am an android-only user, I revived a relative's old iphone just so I could keep it around to use airtags with instead. Apart from the card, which I did like, the round Chipolo experience wasn't very good - the batteries ran out quickly, and when I replaced them, they also lasted only a short while. After several swaps where I started writing the date on the batteries to keep track, i decided it would be more cost effective to go with apple. The card was great but the battery isn't replaceable. The other problem was the app, which I found to be terrible. In a nutshell I wanted these to be good, but was disappointed.

    • +11

They work (in theory) exactly like AirTags. They should (in theory) have a huge advantage in countries where Apple barely cracks 10-25% market share - which is actually most countries outside of Australia, USA, Canada, UK and Western Europe. And even in those Western countries, Android generally has around a 40-60% market share, which is large enough to make it a very functional network. So, as long as the hardware works like AirTags, the Google Find My Device network should be equivalent to or better or better than Apple's (especially if you're travelling to countries with low Apple marketshare).

      • -1

Airtags will communicate with any iPhone. Does the Google ecosystem need an opt-in or does it do it without permission from the user (like Apple does?)

        • +6

I believe it is opt out and runs via Google Play services.

      • This, particularly in Africa, with 13.21% iPhones (11, XR, 8…). It's expected to grow due to flourishing stolen iPhones there ;)

    • +10

      @ESEMCE
You are a bit behind the times, maybe do a quick google before running your mouth.

        • +7

Still behind the times, that is not how it works.
The app is used to track your devices that you add, but the implementation on billions of android devices is baked into Android itself.

Not sure why this hurts you so much.
Check out Googles I/O 2023 keynote

            • +10

@ESEMCE: just let it go dude. you got it completely wrong be a big boy and take it

    • +3

This was the case… however the Chipolo Point and Pebblebee for Android range are some of the latest trackers using Google's version of Apple Find My, so nearby Android devices will send location updates.

I'm so excited for this to finally launch!

      • +2

Now I can finally jump back to a Sony phone! Stuck with Samsung due to using their tags.

    • -2

does time go slower in adelaide or what?

      • Not slower, but there's a strange bubble you enter that warps you about 10 years into the past.

Felt a bit like Fry when I moved away years ago

      • Not that I know of.

    • my airtag regularly tells me my airpods have been left behind..when they're in my pocket

and the airtag in my car doesn't show up in Find My until I'm right next to the car.

Plus, can't find my phone from the airtag, it's a one-way street.

Most underwhelming Apple purchase I'm ever made. V2 will need to be much better.

    • @ESEMCE 41 negs, is that a record lol

      • -1

I'm glad my minor ignorance has made you happy.
I look forward to my award if it is indeed a record.

I could even get second place as well this month!
Somehow my backing down "I'll take your word for it" comment is also incorrect, go figure?

  • +1

    this or Tile..?

    • +5

This isnt locked to their own network (tile), and would work on the entire android network for finding it.

      • Pretty sure that is a feature coming to android, and isn't available right now. https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/10/23718752/google-find-my-d…

        • +4

On their FAQ they say its pre-order awaiting Google to integrate into Find My but its only a couple of weeks away.

          • +1

@gadgetguy: Apparently Tile have it (does that include older hardware?) https://9to5google.com/2023/05/10/android-find-my-device-tra… .
Another one which seems to not support it though (I've seen nothing to say otherwise) is https://nuttag.com.au/ trackers though. I liked those ones, they had a nicer case and were the first to do replaceable batteries before Tile.

            • +4

@superroach: Old tiles not supported, Tile working on new version.

            • @superroach: I got some nuts (so to speak) 5 years ago, 8 for $20 each. Finder 2s IIRC.
One or two have died. Speaker glue has failed in most of them (no big deal except when opening to change battery.)
App was pretty bad at the start, but got a lot better fairly quickly. Overall pretty happy with them, but (the Chipolo) Find My Device integration is great.

  • +2

Thanks, ordered. Been waiting for these to pop up since announcement at Google I/O.

  • +3

have any other devices been announced, that also support the Find My Device network?

    • -1

      Phones?

  • Would this work with OPPO?

    • -5

No, CCP will have access to your location if that was the case.

      • -7

Chinese companies are far more respectful of privacy than the United States in this regard. Many large Chinese enterprises have set up their client servers in Europe, such as Ireland. In contrast, the United States has been demanding the review and monitoring of public personal data for over a decade, as exemplified by US-984XN.

    • Is OPPO android?

      • yes it should work with Oppo and yes Oppo is android based.

  • +11

how I wish they build this into golf balls….

    • +1

Sounds like a business opportunity for you.

    • +4

I don't think the signal carries through water.

  • +1

Oooh nice. Ordered a set, thanks OP. Then I can do a head to head of Airtag vs ST+ vs Chipolo when I head OS later this year.

    • so do you have two different devices to set these two up on or can you install the google tracking on an iphone as well
I assume Airtag cannot be used on Android

      • Partner has an iPhone, I have a Samsung. Friend of ours carries two phones (work related expense as far as I understand it).

Unfortunately the only Airtag capability non-iPhones have is the app that checks if you're being stalked by one.

  • I got a bundle from the last One sale.

How do these compare in terms of functionality?

    • +4

These are the ones on the Android "Find My" network, which are yet to be released. The previous ones were in Chipolo's own network.

    • +2

I bought two of the older chipolo trackers (the ones that were black and more oblong in shape).

They were quite disappointing when measured against the tile. This was back when the tile mate had replaceable batteries. Now they don't and if you want to get a replaceable battery tile you have to buy the tile pro.

Having said that, had a lot of issues getting the chipolos to respond even within a short range and with fresh batteries. Like I said that was an older version.

I have been using tiles a long time. I like the fact that they make a louder noise than air tags. They don't have the annoying antifunctionality that is built into air tags.

      • Agree, the old Chipolo tags were rubbish. I would wait for reviews.

        • This is what I'm thinking, better to wait for the reviews

    • Thanks for the feedback.

So I'm guessing it's like a dedicated Air Tag but for Androids on a similar/same OS? Sounds really nifty but I wonder if the android one also has implemented restrictions like what Apple has to do near the start for safety?

Wonder if I will get more accurate tracking since I use an android. Yet to even open my Chipolo Ones as I haven't been able to travel as of yet..

      • Tile has a "Scan and Secure" feature - you can install the app and allow it to scan for trackers. I cant imagine many prospective victims of stalking being tech-savvy enough to think of that, and apart from that there is no anti-stalking tech built into tile trackers as far as I am aware.

  • +4

Aren't Android alternatives supposed to be cheaper than Apple?

    • thats what I was thinking
also are they any differences to the Airtags or is it just a matter of if you your an iPhone = airtag, Android users = this thing

    • +3

      Probably will be cheaper eventually

    • +2

These are the new 'Point' Model which integrates with Google Find My Device.

    • How could you have possible used a product that is only available for pre-order?

  • woot, finally

  • +5

$117.60 with the referral in the OP folks, that's a pretty good price I figured, ordered a 4 pack

    • If anyone is wondering, it was pretty easy to install the app and sign in to get the referral code for myself.

      • I didn't have to sign in or install an app to get the referral.

        • +1

How are you getting the discount? I'm clicking the link, I have a banner saying I'll get 20% off, at checkout the code is there, but there is no discount applied. Any tips?

          • @muzzas: The code auto filled for me, no incognito, nothing special, just clicked the referral link.

            • @spirrowhack: I have the same issue as @Muzzas. The code is auto prefilled but the amount doesn't change. I contacted their support team to understand what's going on. I tried a different browser and that didn't work either

              • @The Kingslayer: Fine print says the referral code is not for Point devices, from what I can tell

  • +8

hodl for google's own trackers that nobody will buy and as such will quickly get thrown in as free goodies with pixels, sold for dirt cheap, and are available for telstra points etc etc

    • +11

Don't forget the next step in the Google Success Process: get shitcanned 3 months after release due to terrible sales figures and/or unreliable performance.**

** except Pixels, those are bucking the Google trend.

      • and that's google success process bingo!

    • Also the aliexpress knock off clones, assuming they work ok. Not sure if Google will create a walled garden preventing others from making their own.

    • +2

      The Google G Spot? haha

  • +1

Waiting for a further discount or a cross platform tag

  • Is the access to the android features to support this costly? Or will there be $8 generic versions in a few months?

  • +2

https://pebblebee.com/ looks better to me with the rechargeable batteries. Anyone tried both?

    • +1

I agree, I've been looking at pebblebee thanks to its rechargable function and I think it's the better choice, just that it isn't as widely available as Chipolo seemingly is

      • +2

Yep $35 USD shipping to Australia, $125USD for the 4 pack is $190. Not worth it. The Chipolo 3 pack for $100 delivered at around half price makes the rechargeable aspect of the pebblebee not worth it. Don't really need 2 cards. In 2 years time when the Chipolo card dies there'll be something better.

  • Thanks!

  • Do you still need to install their app?

  • thanks OPs. Just ordered one pack. If you enter in CHIP10, it reduces down to $132.30.

    • +4

use the referral link above and its 20% off. $117.60

      • I just realised, i've skipped reading the last part! :(

  • +2

Will this support the close up tracking features like Apple (Ultra Wide Band?)

    • I highly doubt it. Unfortunately hardly any Android phones have UWB (pretty much only Pixel 6/7 Pro and Galaxy S/Z do.)
Maybe in a year or two will be more common?

      Edit: Just found this

Hi, Chipolo Point products do not support UWB.
But our Point finders ring really loud (Chipolo ONE Point up to 120dB and Chipolo CARD Point up to 105dB) so you can hear it even if they are in another room.

      • Yeah, UWB was one of the selling points for my Pix7P purchase, however Android solutions seem to be lagging. I guess the loud speaker and 2 ears is an alternative but I find the price insanely high for what your getting.

Anyone have experience with the Samsung tags?

        • +1

Yes, and it's only the higher end ST+ tags that have UWB. You also have to have very high battery level to use the UWB, and like… that's not very often, as they drain the batteries very quickly. Can't really say I have relied on the UWB feature much, just using the ringing function.

          • @kwchaz: Cheers for the review. The tech seems awesome, I even searched for older sketchy iPhones w/UWB just for tags… alas they hold prices well enough to make them a little steep just as a tag locator. I imagine the network of other devices to ping approximate location when out of your range will not match Apple any time soon.

Not sure if it is NFC uses the same antenna as UWB, but I can out snipe iPhone friends on a EFTPOS machine from a mile away!

            • @auMal: UWB is something like 500 times the frequency of NFC, so it will be different antennas.

            • @auMal: Surprisingly the ST+ was pinged relatively similarly as the AT when in RSA, Japan, Singapore, and even on the East coast of Australia haha… it's doing ok. :P

  • Some comparisons among the most popular tags. Chipolo appears as the best value.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnRzBYv-oXI

  • I really want these but with the tech being unlocked to any manufacturer, there will be a lot more competition to come soon.

    • (profanity) it. I ordered a 4 pack.

Currently using airtags and an old iPhone 7 which is just cumbersome.

      Thanks op

  • +3

Probably should add the additional 20% off with referral code in title? It's easy to miss.

    • +1

Yep, I ordered and missed the referral thing. Cancelled and they refunded within 10 min. Ordered again with the 20% off referral.

  • +4

Their referral program advertise as 'gives you a free Chipolo', but only gives you a code for A$25 off (and cheapest tag, Chipolo ONE is A$40).

Update: On the US Site, the Chipolo ONE is US$25, so I'm assuming that's why it $25 off (not adjusted for AUD)…

    • -5

It's a mess. Online chat said that it's only valid for Chipolo One (even though it worked for Chipolo One Point too, but only gave $25 off). Then they generated me a new code which then worked for the One, but did nothing for the Point. Then when I tried to get the One model (which only works with the app) it tried to charge me $19 for shipping (because it's under $50).

      Completely misleading marketing.

      • +1

How does having issues with their referral program warrant negging this deal?

Also it never said shipping was free.

You will only have to pay for the shipping costs. (Tip: If you add another item to your cart, free worldwide shipping is applied).
