Low price for a popular entry level/kids telescope to see the moon, and maybe saturns rings or jupiters moons at the right time and conditions.
Yes, the commenters will complain its not as good as a $10k premium luxury elite telescope that won't chop your arm off in a freak accident, but it is just $67.
This is a long time popular budget model, so check out youtube for a bunch of tweaks you can do to improve performance on this, as well as some affordable accessory upgrades.

    Cue the Uranus comments.

    • +9

Can I see Uranus with it?

      • +8

No the sun shines out of mine, you would be blinded.

      • +4

Might be a bit of a stretch, but sure.

        • +2

There is a ring around Uranus so you should be able to spot it

          • @serpserpserp: I found Uranus. Not a great experience, not sure what the fuss is about.

    • +1

Damn you beat me to Uranus, I should've posted Uranus in the deal comment.

    • +1

how deep is Uranus in the solar system?

      • How deep is your love?

Seriously though, can you actually see the Saturn ring with this telescope?

        • +1

A 2 inch refractor telescope can make out the rings. This should too.

        • You could, but everything would be tiny.
I would always recomend an astronomy bino over any cheap telescope.
Yes, you can't "zoom-in" as much, but the quality of the image would be way better than any cheap TS.

  • ah ha ha, das hawt! das hawt!

    A review I found

The Cometron is a toy. Short focal ratio spherical mirror means it basically can't focus properly at medium to high power. That plus the limited aperture means it cannot be used for planetary observing, and while views of the Moon will be ok, you won't be able to see a fraction of the detail that can be seen in a better quality scope. The short focal ratio means coma will be present and most inexpensive eyepieces will show a blurry distorted view in the outer parts of the field due to astigmatism. This means even the one thing it would be good at - low power rich field views from a dark sky - won't be great either.

      Here's a review I found about you:

"87percent will repost one review and tell you he found a review, but really you should read more than one review"

Not a great review to be honest.

      • +2

I don't know mate. But maybe you should back up your claim more than just be defensive. Not saying you are wrong, but some claim a bit questionable.

        popular entry level/kids telescope

First post of this exact telescope in OzBargain. Even Amazon only has 17xx ratings globally.

and maybe saturns rings or jupiters moons

I searched "celestron 21023 cometron firstscope " on youtube.
Here's a video of someone trying to capture Saturn Ring.
Here's a video of someone trying to capture Jupiter with the moons.

        Here's a youtube review
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0Q4Moeg30E

$67 for a telescope is a bargain, but $67 for a toy of a few times of use not exactly value for money. Everyone's expectation could be different.

        • -4

Did you even try to search for the videos where people CAN see these?

Visibility can depend on many factors like planet distance, light pollution, weather conditions etc
Here's a video of someone trying to capture you making a good point.

          • +3

@yewman: I am looking forward to your youtube video.

            ps: I didn't neg you.

            • @ausdday: Thanks ausdday, I really just posted it because I bought one and thought it was a bargain, not for making videos.
I've been looking for a telescope for a few months, and there aren't many deals on entry level models around.
If you want higher specs for a low price, it seems a lot of astronomy forums recommend buying second hand, but even that market is sparse nowdays.

Wife: Honey, Little Johnny is showing an interest in astronomy, maybe we should buy him the $67.20 telescope I found on OzBargain and see where it goes?
Husband: Hell no, we need to buy the Super Sonic Telescopic Moronic 1000 Plus for $5,246.15 because more expensive is more better!!!
Narrator: The SSTM1000P has been sitting in the shed after 1 night of action…

          • @ballsau: I would build him an ELT if little Johnny decided to stop playing Nintendo and start looking at the sky.

          • @ballsau: Haha.

My 6" Virtuoso GTI has been sitting in a box unopened for over 6 months..

Wished I didn't miss this deal. I'm too anxious to open it and start to learn as I'm soon to be in the process of moving overseas. But this cheapo would have been a great way to learn the basics and not worry about damaging things..

          • +2

@ballsau: I'd rather get Little Johnny a telescope that is less likely than more to kill his interest in astronomy.

If his first experience is abysmal that'll likely be the end of that.

This means you don't go for a $5k telescope (a move everyone would recognise as idiotic) but, rather, a good telescope (as opposed to a telescope) at a (hopefully) bargain price.

And if he does lose interest anyway you can resell it to someone else and minimise the loss of cash.

      • To be fair, it was a very detailed review giving good reasons.

        • Drats, I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddlesome kids

    • +4

A$70 telescope is not the best out there? Who would have thunk it

      • +2

To be fair, there are really no decent entry level telescope deals around anymore.
Any model that gets good recommendations online gets price hiked instantly to non-bargain status.
Covid shutdowns seem to be the cause, but I think its really because they don't want us seeing them change the batteries in the birds.

  • +2

    Showing as $117 for me

    • same

    • Bugger, for me yeah me too, they had it sitting on $67 for few days.
Deal will probably get marked as expired, but might be worth checking back as they seem to pitch it up and down on some discounts.

  • +1

    Science is for kids

    • We are all kids really if you don't think about Science.

    • So Fauci is for kids?

  • +3

Maybe with this, I can spot more deals.

  • +1

    showing $117.82

    • +6

Yep, I'll be watching your disappointment from afar with my new telescope.

  • +1

this is great but i thought i saw a black hole, but i just saw my future :(

  • +1

You just had your eyes shut thats all.

  • +1

Expect to hear jokes or remarks about Uranus.

    • Because you post comments before you read?

      • They want to hear them, not read them. Someone start orating.

  • tell us more about arms getting chopped off please

  • Do these use glass optics?

  • Id pay $67 to see someone's arm get chopped off with a kids telescope

    • Many such cases. Not me but a guy I know bought one for Chrstmas for his little Jimmy, who sadly didn't pay attention in his Chinese lessons at school. Long story short he misread the manual and police say they found his arm hanging from a power pole a hundred meters from the smouldering crater.

  • OK, if this is no good, for someone that is not interested in a mega expensive new hobby (I already have a couple of those) but kind of curious in a non enthusiast way, what is a better entry level option.

  • +1

Now much cheaper ($40.32) and available for Prime Day.
