Isn't the 980 Pro 2TB at $167 from Amazon US a better deal? With read speeds up to 7000MB/s vs the Sabrents read of 5000 MB/s and write of 4400 MB/s.

980 pro has a firmware bug causing early death in the 2tb version. Avoid! https://www.pugetsystems.com/blog/2023/02/02/update-on-samsu…

Thought it's been patched long ago now.

This was patched and fixed months ago. Just update the firmware on a PC before use if needed. I bought one 3 months ago and the firmware was already up to date.

      • main reason why i void it regardless if it has been patched or not.

The chance of you getting one from 2022 batch is very low. 2023 batches would have already come with a new firmware.

          • @netsurfer: i have a 960 pro 2tb that i bought for $1500 back in 2016, i can wait for the "1090 pro" with proper manufacturing out of the box.

              @dfg555: So you are implying:

              • Samsung lied and all 980 Pro SSDs are doomed even though we know there are multiple revisions of 980 Pros with different NANDs.
              • 1090 Pro is going to be trouble free?

With what happened to 980 Pro and 990 Pro, how honest will Samsung be with firmware / SMART data reporting moving forward?

On 960 Pro, let's not forget, firmware upgrade is still needed.

              Samsung 960 Pro Firmware Issues

Several owners of the Samsung 960 Pro NVMe SSD have reported on various hardware forums that a firmware update provided by Samsung for the drive has caused various issues, from performance degradation to OS instability.

There are IO-related issues where the OS will get stuck at 100% for the 960 Pro read and write activity, even with the drive not performing any actual data transfer.

I have multiple 960 Pro SSDs. Honestly, with all Samsung SSDs, firmware upgrades are inevitable.

I'm not even in the market for one of these but to save everyone else who is:

    1. Is this compatible with PS5?
    2. Does this have DRAM?
  • Is this compatible with PS5?

    • Assuming Sabrent has not swapped / changed components, officially, based on Sony's recommendation, no. Technically, Sony PS5 won't reject it so you can use it.
    • There could be old youTube videos showing PS5 reporting above minimum required speed. That's because the initial firmware to enable NVMe SSD used zero fill test, in which all Phison E16 SSDs were able to cheat big time.

    Does this have DRAM?

    • Again, assuming no swap of components, yes. However, due to being Phison E16 based, a lot of later NVMe SSDs outperform this one. Don't forget, when gaming it is read that matters more. The NAND on this SSD isn't that great in write either.
