Never heard of the site but this game is one of my favourites, really fun with co-op

Doesn't give you a key or anything, it seem to be yet another store.

Yes exactly, looks like it requires you to download the RobotCache client to play the game.

That's a nope for me, keeping it to Steam and Epic makes it easier for me to hoard free games that I'll eventually get to play, probably, maybe…

  • Amd sent an email to me about this..

"Get Wasteland 3 For Signing Up!
Click the link below to redeem. Get yours quick because it’s only available until July 20th, 2023."

Another game library manager .. nah.

  • ? Have to give payment details ?

    • No. Don't require any details, just an account but you can log in with google, steam, discord etc.

Robot Cache - The world's first decentralized video game distribution and resale platform using the block-chain.

    Yuck

I'm anti-crypto unless it's asset-backed and ecologically and economically responsible, but there's nothing wrong with blockchain tech if it's adding value and has a lower environmental toll than the alternative method of processing and validating the grey market game transactions.

This is probably one of those times where it makes sense. Just avoid their coin/mining aspect (which you can disable).

      • It's not clear how much the service actually uses blockchains. They've got this page where they claim their internal token is not actually a cryptocurrency, can't be traded, and it's value is fixed to the US dollar:

        https://wp.robotcache.com/what-is-the-value-of-iron/

So it sounds a lot more like Steam wallet funds. It also sounds like management of game licenses is under their control (including price setting for resale, or who you sell to), which seems pretty centralised. There's nothing there to suggest your games would still be there if the company disappeared.

The only blockchain related aspect seems to be that their game client can be configured to mine cryptocurrency. But it's not clear it is a blockchain that is related to any other part of the business. I wouldn't be surprised if they're mining an unrelated blockchain, pocketing the proceeds, and giving customers store credit.

        • Even still, you can disable that entirely.

The issue of game licences tied to accounts is a ship that sailed a very long time ago, though I agree this isn't a well-established company.

"Robot Cache - The world's first decentralized video game distribution and resale platform using the block-chain."

Yeah this could give you $10 and a good game and still be worth a downvote just for existing.

What exactly are you mad about?

Ill let ya know when tinfoil goes on special

    • I know the reflex response to block-chain is hate, but this might actually be decent implementation

Any mention of blockchain or NFTs is a clear sign that whoever is running this business is not likely to be there for the long haul.

I signed up to them some time ago, never played any of the games through their client though. Now I own Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered, Trapped, Wasteland 2: Director's Cut and Wasteland 3 through them.

Hell no I ain't signing up. Plus wasteland 3 is a steaming pile. It went borderlands goofy style, totally inappropriate.

    • Yeah nah, wasteland 3 was great

  • backed by AMD since 2019, i joined when Open Beta launched mid 2020, tried mining feature got few free games but never used it again although im one who'll literally buy a steam game i got free on epic, if i ever buy games either xbox for play anywhere or steam storefronts, launcher also allows you to resell games for 25% back

appears their miner tool will soon pay out for computing medical research in collaboration with BIONIC, personally i already do this with gridcoin

not sure how all the blockchain stuff works with RobotCache and what happens to your digital assets if the store ever closes down, if there was a way to access a wallet outside of RobotCache i'd imagine in the future any similar service could startup and if they have agreements with the publisher's games you already own a license for wouldn't have to pay for them again, otherwise the whole 'blockchain' concept seems kind of pointless

  • If you're interested in any way in having a game capable of being backed up / archived to play on another machine you own or offline, avoid this platform like the plague. By its very nature it's DRM-ed to hell. You won't be able to do squat with the game unless you're online and using their client.

If any of that isn't a concern to you then by all means get your freebie.

AVOID, the client is a crypto mining backend and will make you PC run like crap, I was wondering why BF2042 starting running really bad and then i realised that this app was auto running and was the cause.
