What Incentivises You to Post Deals on OzBargain?

Having been a member of this site for a long time, I am both amazed and grateful for the good deals/hacks I have found here over the years. Something I have always wondered though is: What exactly is the incentive for people to post deals here on Ozbargain?
I'm talking about the regular Ozb members and not admins/mods/store reps posting (since it's clear they have some vested interest for doing so).

Surely it can't just be the chance to win $100 or an Ozbargain hoodie?
Or maybe the chance to get a gold badge on their account? šŸ¤”

Do the small minority of users who post deals for the community do so out of the goodness of their own hearts?

In many cases the OP would have actually benefited from not posting here. For example in the recent Tithe.ly deal, OP probably could have gotten a lot of free stuff had it not been Ozbargained.

The way airlines and credit cards keep devaluing points by the time any of us retire our internet points won't be enough to fly to Dubbo.

      • In that case, JV might rack up huge ozbargain debt.

It's a community collective. We benefit so much from other people spending time and effort to post content. If I find something that might benefit others, then why wouldn't I want to contribute that too.

Member of the month gets you $150 from OzBargain, so naturally some top posters are super competitive. Especially those who feel they should have sole control over some types of deals, i.e. Epic freebies. Then there's those (like me) who post what they're interested in for fun. The votes don't matter much.

    • +3

The real prize was the friends we made along the way - but in a much more real sense - the member of the month award was the real prize.

      • +9

On a serious note it really has been about the friends we've made along the way. There's plenty of OzBargainers I know in person and meet up with regularly. I even dated a fellow active OzBargainer for a while ;)

I believe the term is called forum
depersonlisation. It's when a indivual is so enamoured by a online society that they begin to visualise everyday life into the metric of forum deals.

Ozbargain cultivties this through meetups, forum culture, and monetary prizes.

I only post under cost price Hardly Normal deals…

    I wish

  • I hate paying full price, and only want to pay the least amount possible.

posting deals shows how that can be done or how much you should be paying (but admittedly not buying stuff you don't really need is the best money saver).

First you post the bargains, then you get the power, then you get the women.

Its that feeling you get when your wandering the aisles of a store, hunting for a recently listed OzBargain deal and you stumble accross another person, phone in hand, an arkward glance, eyes lock, and in that one joyous moment you know that you are both OzBargainers. Joy turns to fear, as you realise the sudden threat to obtaining that final stock on hand, a true and worthy opponent..

Do the small minority of users who post deals for the community do so out of the goodness of their own hearts?

I can try and give my perspective. I've been a member of OzBargain for over 10 years. I'm definitely not the most prolific deal poster, as I'm not a huge shopper, but I do post deals here where I see something that could be useful to someone else. Most of the time (probably like 80%+ of the time), when I go to post a deal, someone else has already posted it.

When I first joined OzBargain, this place was a real community - there weren't as many deals, but they were more diverse, you generally had more engagement, people did it to help each other out and contribute. There was some level of understanding that we needed to share to keep getting great deals. Everything also felt much friendlier back then, people who were here were "in the know", we all loved the game of bargain hunting, and we were all just in it to save a buck and find some great deals.

Over time, I think this place has become really toxic. People who've contributed nothing to this site post lame comments to get upvotes, the forums have become filled with people complaining about various things that have nothing to do with bargains, and a large mob here have become extremely entitled - sniping all the deals posted without ever having contributed something themselves, whinging when their price error purchases aren't fulfilled, dunking on new members who are trying to contribute and post deals (when their first post isn't that great).

  • +2

I feel that finding deal is always a collective effort and we all are part of the game. One can't find or know all that's posted here on their own; no matter however much aware and free they are.

Validation from the community whether its actually a good deal or not

    • This. I've posted a some deals and a few take off but most flounder and a few get mercilessly derided.

  • Kindness Deals, free to give but priceless to receive

  • You can win $100 or a hoodie?! Why is this not posted as deal!!

  • +3

I have stopped posting deals now after getting put into the penalty box for calling someone a stooge. That was after I was responding to being called names. So yeah. All the best everyone else.

  • Pay it forward,

  • +3

Doing good for community since they have done so many good deals and helped me save bucks.

  • +2

Imaginary internet points, validation that I don't get from anywhere else /s

Basically the pay it forward reason as posted by other users. I do it because I benefit from deals posted by other users and want to give back. Generally, I post when I want to purchase something myself, don't find a post, go hunting, and find something that I think it is a decent deal.

  • Merged from Why Do You Post Deals?

I often think including myself why do we post bargains for others to see?

I'm interested to know what your motivations are when you post a deal?

    • +2

Iā€™ve found so many bargains on here that it just wouldnā€™t feel right to keep something I find to myself

    • +1

I post purely for fun! Shame for others it becomes a game/competition which results in power-hungry users threatening others and name-calling behind members' backs. Some even don't post until they find a good "vote-getting" deal, in other words, they chase votes.

      • Don't forget the part where they say to store reps 'you're not allowed to give any deals to X. They have to go me'. Or the 'X has posted too many deals. You have to stop'.

Or the 'I can only post freebies for this platform. No one else'.

Oh and accusing people who predominantly post deals for one category (i.e. gaming) of being toxic when they themselves predominantly post this same category.

        • +2

Or the smoking out of other users so as to protect their already public platform from the information being ā€œstolenā€.

    • +1

I am a bargain hunter and if I find a deal, I buy it and then share. I have posted deals of items I didn't need/want but knew they were a deal and posted them so somebody can get value out of the deal.
