You must be kidding me! We pay $14 to advertise for Qantas!?
Qantas should pay us to put it on our luggage!

"The Q Bag Tag is a permanent bag tag that allows you to check-in your baggage easily when flying within the Qantas domestic network and eliminates the need for a paper bag tag, streamlining your journey through the domestic terminal."

      • What happens if you need to connect to a non Qantas flight?

      • So we are essentially paying THEM to save time of THEIR staff and cost of THEIR paper stickers, with a reusable tag? :D

        • It doesn’t actually save time either, some ports need to manually scan the tag with a portable machine by the handlers

          • -1

@XCOM v2: it certainly saves time at the airports with the technology have been using one for over a decade

      • Someone should tell the Qantas check-in staff that.

I was given two silver and then 2 Gold years ago, and never once have I not had paper tags on my bags, even on Qantas domestic.

They are quite nice tags when they are free but I certainly wouldn't pay for one.

        • +1

if you use the automated baggage machines you don't have a paper tag, you can print a paper receipt if you wish but it's optional

    • +3

Imagine a brand having their logo on a product they sell.

      • -6

You mean like so many other companies?

      • +1

Yeah, couldn’t imagine a sports shoe retailer doing that

    • I bet Tourists quite like the Kangaroo logo and would like having this as a keepsake.

    • +1

Don't forget about their membership for $99 as well.

    Is this like apple tag?

    • +4

      Short answer: No

    • +35

      Longer answer: Definitely not

    • +3

Even longer answer: completely different function, similar shape

    • +12

Epic saga answer: If Apple Tag were an apple pie, then this would be like a tuna sandwich - both might be lunch, but you wouldn't want to confuse the two in a blind taste test!

      • +1

And the tuna sandwich was made fresh last month.

    • -1

Corporate answer: No, it doesn’t have Apple logo

    • +3

      No answer:

    • +1

Proper answer: It look like a color of an apple and it is also a tag, but not the apple tag manufactured by Apple Inc. hence no.

I got given a set of two for making Silver. Have used it only once since 2019. It doesn't work for international, nor for oversize luggage.

But hey it was free, and it is nice when it works, but in reality doesn't add a whole lot of value.

      • +5

You keep on trying to say something, with out actually saying something.
Stop going on like a mad man when you don't even have a clue what these are.

    • Made silver last year and only got a single tag!

      • Yep they scrapped sending 2 a while ago.

        • I was sent two for making silver last week.

          • @recession1: Interesting. Not sure what to make of that unless they've headed back to 2 now…

            • @Prongs: Also worth noting I qualified for silver in January so it took them 6 months to send them out. Don’t count on getting them any time soon after reaching status.

      • You're not missing out too much :) the other tag still sat unused and my confidence in them fell further after reading the comments on this post.

But yes it's a weird move for sending out one tag when you're checkin limit is two. It's another example of a sloppy cost cutting move that doesn't make sense. Are they expected you to use the tag for one bag and printed for another?!

      • I have like 4 silver and 6 gold ones in various drawers at home. I also have quiete a few Virgin ones, they are handy as an ID sort of thing but other than that pretty much useless for checking bags. I still get a print out with priority on it at least and 80% of the time I get the normal luggage tag as well.

  • +2

I thought they were small tags. They look like huge discs. Handy for quick identification - if youre not flying with the red kangaroo

  • +15

Qantas is really shame of Australia nowadays

    • -7

Not our military who murders civilians overseas and helps cover it up?

      • Freedom fighte

  • +8

this replaces paper bag tags on domestic routes.

You can skip the line up and the hassle of printing out the paper bag tag. Ive used mine dor hundreds of flights with no issues

  • +6

Worth it if you're a regular flyer but then if you're a regular flyer you'd have these for free.

Time saving. Get to the lounge quicker and smash out that extra email or 2

    • +15

As a deleter of emails, please stop sending them. Thank you.

      • +1

Ok then enjoy an extra 5 min of sleep

    • -2

What do you do for work where you need to send emails during your commute?

      • +7

You make it sound like it's a rare thing. Any office job that has travel..

      • +1

Err exactly. Anything customer facing type role

  • +6

How is this a bargain? The paper tag is free.

    • +5

Paper being an alternative is not a good enough reason to neg this deal. Being just back in stock however, with zero discount is.

    • +2

Skip the line of people bumbling around with the bag tag printers, and then fumbling around to stick them on their bags. Especially useful during peak times.

  • +1

    My favourite coaster!

  • +37

These are useless, frankly. I recently had the qtag break off after check-in and my baggage subsequently was left off the flights. It then arrived to my destination 2 days later.

Baggage services told me these tags have frequent issues, and they suggested they should be avoided. Printed tags are their preference.

    • +3

Not sure who negged you, here's a +

    • +1

I was told by baggage services and the person who delivered my lost bag with a Q-Tag on it that your luggage is far more likely to not reach your destination at the same time as you if you use these.

  • +1
    1. These things are don't always work.
    2. You get free one if you have status, and it comes with Grey, Gold, Black, White colour depends on your tier.
  • +8

I don't understand why anyone would buy this. I have 2 and they are completely useless

    1. Obviously they only work on Qantas, and from memory they didn't use them when I boarded in Kal. (Things might have changed).
    2. They are stupidly large and heavy for what they are
    3. I got mine with silver status for free
    4. Depending on the airport you're in, it takes less than a minute to print off a label.
    • +3

      They don't weigh THAT much…

They are very useful during Sydney peak periods. Especially when it's the beginning of school holidays and you have masses of people who rarely travel, and bumble their way through the bag tag printing and putting it onto their bags.

      • I got it out. It's not a brick, but for something that acts as an alternative to a sticker, it's significantly more.

        It's 8cm x 9cm, so basically a coaster

Really the only benefit I can see is if you were a FF doing airport runs often. But if that was the case you'd probably have a higher status with additional carry on anyway.

        • Yeah pretty much. For the casual flyer there's really no point.

I think they have saved me hours over the years. Hours which I would have then wasted by going to the lounge to get something to eat

  • +3

QTags are a bit useless, I don’t trust em and instead they are used as an identifier on my main check in baggage. And as well on my carry on suitcase because WP1.

I would NEVER ever use a Q tag on your main checked in luggage.
And according to the lounge attendant a few months ago, is that they are going to be all deactivated and removed by the end of this year.

    • I've never had any issues with Qtags.

Don't put them on at the same time as a paper tag. I've done so before and it registers as having 2 bags.

  • i got mine for free, but i am a platinum one member

    • And you’d also get them for free when you climbed up the QFF ranks, silver, gold, platinum and then platinum one.

      • yes, that is correct. i wish i got one for each tier i moved up, so i can have 4 :(
also wish they make the q tags different colours for each level, where platinum one would be all iced out with a spinner logo. :)

        • +1

i wish i got one for each tier i moved up

You are entitled to tags for each level achieved, even if you take a big trip that results in you skipping one or more levels. If you missed out then contact QFF.

also wish they make the q tags different colours for each level

They are different colours for each level. Red, silver, gold, charcoal, white, jet black.

      • Annoyingly back in the day, I went from Bronze to Gold in 1 trip.

Didn't get the Silver tags or the Silver lounge passes to give to friends.

        • You are entitled to tags for each level achieved, even if you take a big trip that results in you skipping one or more levels. If you missed out then contact QFF, albeit it may be potentially more difficult if it was many years ago.

    • Sounds like you may also have a Hugh G Ego

  • +15

My friend works for Qantas as a bag handler in sydney, he says they don't work literally they need to manually scan them multiple times because the automated machines don't pick them up, which creates more hassle for them and gets the bag delayed, sometimes the bag might not get put on at all due to a malfunctioning tag or because it was scanned then put on the wrong plane. Paper however easy to see at all times where it is going and makes it easy to identify and send to right barrel then to right plane then to right carousel. Everyone he works with including his supervisors know and say they are completely useless and no1 reason for delayed or lost bag and they come off bags quite easily a lot and actually costs the company a lot in finding, putting on different plane and delivering to customer so he doesn't know why they still use/sell them aside from free marketing or to get rid of inventory.

  • +2

Mine crumbled after a couple of years not flying during Covid
Also rrp not a bargain, just advertising.

  • +3

If it's free, I am more than happy to use it.
But if QF want me to pay for it to help cutting their costs, nah thanks.
Oh, how about bring back someone to check my luggage in.

  • This has to be a joke right? Technology which applied more than a decade ago.

I got a set of Silver and a set of Gold which I cbf to use. Heck I even cbf to fly Qantas anymore.

  • +1

"There is no discount", you should have just stopped there. That was your sign to not post an 'stock update' on a deal site.

  • lol they say any publicity is good publicity but nah this aint it, RRP not bargain

  • I have the Silver, Gold and Platinum versions of these and don't use them as they are quite bulky and heavy.
Funny enough, the Platinum are dark grey and nothing special.
Only functional on domestic flights, don't waste your points on them.

Oh, and I've been about 500 status pts away from Lifetime Silver for the past decade and not really getting much closer (somehow I can't earn QFF status flying Virgin)

    • Easy fix, Melbourne - Auckland - Melbourne will get you 360 SCs under a DSC for $1300

  • First time I tried one (domestic) - didnt work. Wont be using it again.

  • Not bad but if you think you fly enough to buy or redeem these tags then you'll probably get them free as you level up on Freq flyer status. Got my silver and gold tags back in the days of continuous work travel and never once used them for their auto check-in function. Fine as normal durable luggage tags and visual representation of Freq flyer status so perhaps the staff treat you a bit better.
Much better quality than the credit card like ones issued by Virgin.

    • perhaps the staff treat you a bit better

If the bag is checked in through an automated bag drop then no customer-facing staff will see them.

If you bring them onboard then they could be seen but that should not result in any different treatment. Staff have status info on their tablets, the tags may not represent your current status (you might have achieved platinum years ago but are bronze today), and the tags may not even be yours.

Qantas wireless bag tags can be used by anyone

    • I can say from first hand experience that staff do not treat you any different just because you have a fancy Q tag.

      • Ages ago when these were first introduced there was a trend people put them on the hand carry just to show off their QFF status.

  • +1

Time saved printed bag tag vs. dodgy product that has to be manually scanned by baggage handlers

    Just use the paper ticket

  • If they put an Apple Air Tag (or an Android, Tile, Samsung Tag) in it, then it would be a useful device for the customer and not just QANTAS.

  • anyone know if qantas replace the tag for free if the elastic breaks? have a few broken ones

    • +1

      Probably under ACL
