Hmmm, seeing that it is capped at 50,000 points per day and $2,500 worth of iTunes cards will give you 50,000 points then I'm going to assume that you can max out at 5 x $500 Variable iTunes cards per day.

  • Been a while since I last purchased one of these, sad to see more fraud happening with gift cards.

According to the links in the post,

Before buying, tear out the inner card and reveal the redemption code to confirm that it has not been scratched off or damaged.

Wouldn't that be tampering with the gift cards prior to purchase?

Meaning, would it be OK for me to go to the store, pick the card values I'm after, rip the packaging open, peel/scratch the protected codes, then purchase if no missing codes?

As long as you intend to pay for the gift cards I don't see the issue. It's in the interests of yourself, Apple and Coles to avoid a scam taking place.

That's exactly what I do and I encourage others to do the same. If staff are confused, just calmly explain what you're doing and show them the image linked in the post.

        Appreciate this.

Guess it's similar to opening a bottle of soap, and sniffing it to see if you like the scent or not.

  • Wasn’t these just on sale like 2 weeks ago at Coles?

    • Yes and I missed it so glad it's back!

They really wanna offload these before the next iPhones and Apple Watch gets released.

My local Coles store the cards behind the counter now and they’re all the newer tamper resistant types where you have to rip off the paper seal before scanning. The card itself is glued to the packaging.

Might get another $1000 worth :)

Don’t assume this. One of my $100 cards I bought from Woolies had been tampered with. New design, paper seal in tact, glued to the cardboard. I honestly don’t know how they do it. It has to be the gift card manufacturer.

      • Was this card behind the counter or on the shelf that anyone can access?

        • Fault card was on the shelf that anyone can access.

Just visited Marrickville and noticed that they store the gift card on the front desk. When I asked to purchase, the store manager came to ask me questions and took a picture of my drive license. I’m glad they are taking actions against the scam.
Top them up to my account in front of the staff to ensure the authenticity, all real.

    • took a picture of my drive license

idk man, that feels a bit much. I was able to purchase (in SA) without any issues. I did wander about the store whilst I peeled off the code to check if it's been tampered with.

I agree, but I believe the level of caution varies from store to store. The Coles I visited appeared exceptionally cautious at the moment. Probably because I wanna buy 5 x $500. The store manager even took a few phone calls before allowing me to proceed with the payment. I hope Coles and Apple are working towards a final resolution.

        • Fair enough. It does sound like your store might've had a few cases of tampered cards.

    • I bought mine from Marrickville Metro Coles a few weeks ago and they definitely store them behind the counter.

Me and partner bought $4k in total but the staff never asked for our Driver's Licence.

      • We came back yesterday night to buy another 1k, no pictures were taken. I suppose that was an isolated incident, lol

Very impressed with the packaging for the new iTunes cards (although they no longer give out a free sticker). It will be pretty obvious that it has been tampered with.

Also please note that the gift come with a free 2 months of Apple TV but it can only be used once per account. Now I have to remember to kill off my subscription in 60 days…

    • It will be pretty obvious that it has been tampered with

3 out of the 4 'Version 2' gift cards I just bought from Coles were tampered with despite no clear signs of tampering from the external packaging (the tear-out strip was fully intact).

I had even made a mental note to check the internal code as per OP's warning (which I always did for Version 1) but being in the self-checkout and unfamilar with the new design my mind blanked and I assumed the code under the tear-out strip was the actual redemption code - that's just the barcode to buy the card.

If this happens to you call Apple Support immediately (seems to be 24/7 unlike the support centre number Coles gives you) - in my case the cards were still unredeemed and they could help me enter the full redemption codes for each.

It looks impossible to tamper though as the package has to be physically ripped to get to the Apple Redemption Code. What made you see it was tampered with?

        • The package is essentially a redemption card between two layers of cardboard that are glued together.

With the right tools the layers could have been separated with no/minimal outside damage and resealed with hot glue by the looks of it. i.e. no ripping involved.

Alternatively, the redemption card may have been tampered with earlier in the supply chain before it even gets 'sealed' into the package.

Manufacturing tolerances mean even an untampered package I have to compare has slight inconsistencies in the external seams.

      • What is the sign of tempering? Is the redemption code missing a letter?

        • +1

Last 4 digits of the code are scratched off like shown in OP’s linked image.

For people who have bought this before, how long does it take for the 20x points to show up in Flybuys account? I bought $1000 worth yesterday morning around 10:30am. This afternoon 1,000 points was added to Flybuys account. Chatted Helpdesk and was told it takes 48-72 hours for the 20x bonus to be added. Is that the usual experience?

    • +2

Usually appears after 5pm the next day

  • I bought $2500 worth of cards (max per day) but only got 47,500 points. So the cap includes the actual value of the gift cards.

    • You get 2500 points as separate line.
You should still get a total of 50,000 points.
