In case it helps anyone, I recently bought green IKEA Laddas, and the AA 2450 and AAA 750 version were both made in Japan.

I agree. Ladda all the way

I’m concerned with the reports of ladda AAA leaking

        • +1

First im hearing of this (including comment below). Is it a common reported thing here on ozb or elsewhere? Thought these were rebadged eneloops?

          • +2

@aNoPHeLeS: Not sure if commonly reported but I switched to LSDs to avoid leaking. Out of 20 LADDAs and 20 eneloops in AAA remotes, I've had probably 6 LADDAs (white previous version) start leaking over the last 2-3 years. Really frustrating. I always thought they were rebadged eneloops but perhaps the badging is not as strong and leaks when they re-wrap them :)

If I wanted leaky batteries I would get the Amazon or Aldi alkalines :D

            • +1

@bdl: Strange, I wonder if it was a bad batch. I've bought probably 200+ white LADDA AAs for work over the past 5+ years and not a single one has leaked. A number of them failed though; the Ikea charger flashes red and my MAHA C9000 reports HIGH.

            • +1

@bdl: When batteries sit in unused devices for long periods, hydrogen can build up in the battery cell until the pressure causes the battery's insulating seals to breach. The gas is harmlessly released, but the rupture also provides an exit point for the battery cell's chemical

I don't think its a ladda issue as such, could be a same result if you treated the Eneloop in similar fashion. I never had similar issue with either unless I left any battary in a toy unattended for years.

              • @boomramada: These were/are in devices and being used daily about the same amount, never ever had a problem with the eneloops, and to be frankly I was really surprised that the LADDAs were the only ones with leak issues (especially as I knew they were rebadged eneloops).

Granted, 40 cells is by no means a huge sample size, however I did buy them at different times at least 2-3 months in between, from different Ikea stores in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne (and eneloops from Amazon and Costco) - it just seemed way too coincidental that only the LADDAs had issues :). The AA LADDAs (which I've only got four of) have been fine (touch wood).

              • @boomramada: "I never had similar issue with either unless I left any battary in a toy unattended for years."

Is that why toys generally use batteries in pairs? ;)

            • @bdl: Annoying when they leak into your expensive charger!

              • @hoxygt: But a good excuse to buy an even better, more expensive charger! :)

        • Yep mine burnt out one of my remotes.

    • Can you use an existing eneloop charger for the laddas?

      • 100% definitely. Best to use a Smart charger and not the bog standard ones that come with the Costco packs, for example.

        • +1

Any recommendations on a smart charger?

        • Any reason for that? I have a bog standard costco pack

          • +1

@Grannular: Not sure what the Costco charger does, but the very cheapest ones will only work on a timer, so you can easily overcharge.

Also if they've got more sophisticated electronics but are underpowered and slow, it's harder for them to detect when charge is full (there's a delta-temperature over delta-time inversion that signals charge state which is harder to defect at slow change)

I mean, it's not going to set anything on fire, nickel is pretty safe, but not optimal for batteries.

Nitecore is good. XStar(?) is good and a bit cheaper. Maha is nice overkill.

            • +1

@rumblytangara: The Costco one is a low and slow, fixed time 16H charger, so your commentary pretty much nails it.

It doesn't have individual metering for the slots either.

I use a Maha Powered C900 which I'm happy with, but will go the analyser version in the future.

              • @nickeveli: I've got the Maha 9000, the analyser stuff is fun, bit TBH more entertaining than useful.

I've identified only a couple of cells that were dying fast over the years, and that was from the same batch anyway.

                • @rumblytangara: Really - I've found capacity testing useful for kicking out sub-par cells and refresh and analyse does a good job at bring crap or dead cells back to life.

                  • @hoxygt: I've just not encountered problems with Eneloops over the years. The only couple cells I've had die were non-LSD NiMHs that came bundled into a flashlight, and were just really bad quality to start with. Come to think of it, I have had other NiMHs die prior the Maha, but they were crap quality cells from an iffy Hong Kong company. So not worth trying to keep either.

I've tested capacity on my old Eneloops and it's not been worth running the refresh cycle. I've done it anyway just for laughs though.

    • +1

I've had Ladda's leak way more than eneloops, especially the AAAs - no idea why but I'm switching back to the OG Eneloops now

    • How much are the AAA?

  • Great price, sadly I think I've now reached eneloop limits, have so many unused in the cupboard finally

    • +1

      Eneloop limit: MAX

    • +1

Lucky! I can't seem to find even 1 of them

      • +1

I guess this is what it feels like to be wealthy, finally I made it… Blessed

        • +1

Wealthy is when Eneloops are single use only then bin.

Mega wealthy is when the battery operated item is single use only and bin.

Number of batteries: 4 AAA batteries required. (included)

Good to know. It is always helpful to have it confirmed when buying batteries that they are both required and included.

    • Yeah, I copied/pasted from the listing without any editing…

      My favourite:

Compatible phone models: Gaming consoles, Battery powered toys, Digital

  • +1

    Thankyou👍

  • whats a good price to look out for batteries and charger? I only use a couple at a time

  • Who's actually getting a subscription for rechargeable batteries? They can't actually expect people to not cancel this as soon as it's ordered. lol

  • Is it worth getting the Eneloop Pros for an extra couple of bucks? ($15.75 S&S)

    • Short answer: Yes
      Longer answer: Yes, absolutely.

      • +1

        So that's a maybe? ;)

Cheers, ordered some of the pros to replace my Laddas.

        • Pros have higher capacity and less charges (500 vs 2000).

Assuming monthly charge, do you really need 160 years of battery use?

          Thats my argument for Pro

          • @cook99: The standard eneloops will last longer in terms of years. After 5 years of even minimal use, the standard eneloops will probably be fine but the Pro's may be dead.

Use the Pro's if you need greater capacity and grunt else go with the standard.
