Aluminium-Free Antiperspirant Deodorants

So Uncle Shcherbina recently started using an aluminium-free antiperspirant deodorant. Purchased during a recent 50% special, of course.

By way of unsolicited review, I'd say results have thus far been acceptable. But I do feel that, compared to the traditional aluminium-enriched version, I am prone to sweating more in the underarms. While this doesn't result in an offensive stench of body odour, by day's end there is a noticeable but mild bodily aroma.

The presence of aluminium in deodorants has been controversial for some time due to an alleged connection with Alzheimers disease, but I understand such concerns have largely been debunked (based on pretty much zero research I have conducted into the issue).

Does anyone else have experience with these products? Are you fine folks bothered either way by the presence of aluminium? Or still happy using Lynx Africa since year 8?

I think the whole point of aluminium-free deodorant is you still sweat but it doesn't smell or smells less. It's not antiperspirant so won't change how much you sweat. Arguably, sweating is good for your body anyway so masking it is enough (unless you have a medical condition that causes you to swear excessively).
I don't believe there's any studies linking aluminium in antiperspirant to Alzheimer's, breast cancer, etc

    • The deodorant I'm using does still claim to be an antiperspirant though. And I thought the aluminium was the ingredient which blocked the sweat pores and stopped you sweating.

Interestingly, this deodorant is also alcohol-free. I understand alcohol is usually used in deodorants to kill bacteria in the armpits, because bacteria is what actually causes the odour issue.

It only mentions deodorant on the Dove website - https://www.dove.com/au/p/men%2Bcare-0%25-aluminium-aerosol-…

Coles got the product name wrong. It's explained in the description though

What's the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?
It's simple. Both Dove Men+Care deodorant and antiperspirant shield from odour - but, formulated with aluminium salts, Dove Men+Care antiperspirants control sweat giving dry protection. If freshness is enough for the day ahead then choose Dove Men+Care Clean Comfort aluminium-free deodorant.

        • Ahh quite right, I've been had!!

    • Tourette syndrome?

      • Haha. I tried to fix it but it was too late 😂

    from Nivea website

You may have heard a story about aluminium in deodorants causing diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s disease in the media.

The Journal of The National Cancer Institute published a study in 2002 exploring the relationship between breast cancers and antiperspirants or deodorants in 1606 women. The findings did not show an increased risk of cancer amongst deodorant or antiperspirant users.

The Alzheimer’s Society also stated that the link between environmental aluminium and Alzheimer’s disease seems increasingly unlikely.

Unless new scientific proof finds a conclusive link between aluminium in personal hygiene products and a disease, there is no reason why you would have to switch your favourite anti-perspirant for an aluminium free deodorant.

Anyway I use the Invisible Black & White Fresh Anti-Perspirant Roll-on - frequently on here for like $2-3 ea when bought on sale with s& s with Amazon and judging by the upvotes on the deals, so do many other members…

Using manufacturers claim from a 20 year old study is pretty poor just so you know.

That's literally how the opiod crisis and other issues started. I hope you rely on stronger evidence than the company selling you an item saying "it's ok!".

  • I have avoided aluminium for many years. I use QV, they actually have 2 that look the same, but one is aluminium free. Very good for sensitive skin. You can use foot detox pads to remove toxins from the body if you need to.

    • Do you find it masks BO well? Do you smell by the end of the day if you apply in the morning? Do you find it's effective if in preventing BO when you sweat alot?

you will have to try it to find out

Stop wearing a tin-foil hat deoderant

  • Anti-perspirant and deodorant are different things aren't they?

    • Correct, but they can also be both.

Prefer to limit heavy metals intake so use MooGoo deodorant.

Been using these guys for a while, Aussie made and it seems to hold up well unless I'm doing a hard workout on a hot day.

OP Won't wear Aluminum in the pits, but be sure has 3 magical hats in the trunk made from aluminum to stop them 5G rays.

    • +4

Hey now. Three quick points regarding OP:

      • Point 1 He gave no opinion on whether aluminium is harmful;
      • Point 2 He didn't even indicate that he actively avoids aluminium; and
      • Point 3 He even went to the effort of pointing out that claims regarding its harmful effects have been refuted.

      Apologise to Uncle Shcherbina pls.

          It's a constant struggle juggle

        • Confusingly, OP appears to have referred to himself in the third person in the original post too. Did he forget to log into his ghost account for that post also? How many accounts does he have?

I think you'll find aluminium-free and antiperspirant are mutually exclusive.

    • Yes, suspect you're right.

My preference is Dermal Therapy Crystal Deodorant Stick. It's Alcohol & aluminium free.

    https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/85190/dermal-therapy…

  • Doesn't matter what I tried I end up sweating more even in winter. Cannot handle it. Use Dove roll on.

  • If you want to spend some money I have had good results with this Aluminium free Deodorant from Loccitane ($30) Cap Cedrat Spray Deodorant

  • I've accepted that I sweat a lot, and no antiperspirant ever worked properly for me; not only that, but all that aluminium gets deposited in the clothes, and in time ruin it. Also, although there is no obvious link to anything nasty with the aluminium present in the deodorants, it is still toxic for us, and I would rather avoid it if I can.

I've been using self made deodorant with coconut oil, cornflour and essentials oils for years now. I never smell bad, actually always smell quite nice, but it does not stop sweating at all.

I've recently tried this one for when I need some sweat control, and it did reduce sweating slightly, and also smells quite nice: https://www.beardandblade.com.au/collections/deodorants/prod…

  • I haven’t used that product but we moved to The Greeench deodorant powder at Lush a while ago and it lasts for months plus feels good.

  • Apart from pure mineral salts like Crystal like @walktall links to, someone in our home uses Lavilin

Lavilin Deodorant Clinically Proven To Last Up To 7 Days

The mineral salt works great but I might try Lavilin next.

    • Just discovered (1) Lavilin is now in Australia (we used to go via iHerb) and (2) they have free samples https://lavilin.com.au/shop/

The sample multi-packs seem to be good value too.

      • Ordered a free sample. Thanks for the recommendation. Keen to try

        • Think I’ll join you 😄

No Pong by @Gelf54 sounds good too, but “effective for 12 h” isn’t quite the same as “up to 7 days” so Lavilin could be much cheaper in the long run.

  • I'm surprised no-one has mentioned No Pong. since I got the recommendation from here years ago.
Aussie made and works well for me.

  • Discovered just now: goodeau, Australian made, no bicarb. Apparently awesome all-round (★★★★★ 4.8 stars / 118 reviews).
