    arnt they all gweilo

  • Ozb and ginger beer don’t mix from my experience

    Here’s some reviews

    https://untappd.com/b/gweilo-beer-ginger-beer/5107268

    • +16

I tend to not really put much stock in Untappd reviews, they're normally written by craft beer fans that love smelling complexity in their own farts.

      • +4

Checked some of my favourite craft beers (Ten Toes, Your Mates etc.) and they're rated in the 3's.

I get this kind of stuff is incredibly subjective but when you've got a bunch of the same stouts topping the site you know it's all a bit of a wank.

      • +2

Just grabbed a case from my local Liquorland. Tastes very similar to Bundaberg non-alcoholic ginger beer with slightly bitter aftertaste as expected from an alcoholic ginger beer.

I would say all those so called experts on untappd are talking out of their ****hole. Beer is not bad, and a steal at this price.

          • @INFIDEL: Taste is a very subjective thing and since I don't have much experience with many different ginger beers, other than Bundaberg, I thought it was very close in taste, except for aftertaste. This does have those mild lemongrass and pepper notes in aftertaste though.

Price value preposition is what goes in it's favour, otherwise there are definitely better ginger beers out there if you willing to pay more.

@dealhunter52: Have travelled a lot, experiencing ginger in different cultures.
Grew up on great home brewed GB, home grown ginger, with an award winning cook.
Have sampled many different GB since.

We can get used to the taste of products we are used to, without realising there are far better tasting ones!
It's one of the great pleasures of travel. (But I've met people from USA who ONLY eat at Maccas in France😜)

Was embarrassed that a cafe sold Bundaberg GB in Dublin. Surely they had a better local product. Yes, but it was what their supplier stocked & locals wanted something "different". It was just a novelty.

As I said Bundaberg GB is mild in comparison to the ginger & spice level of this drink.

From memory, there was very little ginger aftertaste with Bundaberg GB. The overwhelming sensation was it's sweetness! Fortunately that's not the case with this drink.

Hours after drinking this, I can still sense the warming spiciness of the drink.
Which is similar to a good spicy meal. Admittedly mainly from the Sichuan pepper, as I've eaten in great meals around Sichuan and Chongqing in China.

But like a spicy meal, I might need time before the next one. Something to look forward to, rather than over-indulge in😉
Doubt that's the case for Bundaberg GB drinkers.

It's an Asian inspired / fusion Ginger Beer!

there are definitely better ginger beers out there if you willing to pay more.

Have tried most - wasn't impressed
Based on taste, lack of sweetness, & definite spiciness - this drink impressed me!

              Price value preposition…
Bundaberg launched alcoholic GB - FREE. Wasn't popular here, based on it's bad taste. Never tried again.

Out of all the ginger beers I've tried, James Squires, Brookvale Union, Ginger Resistance, Stone's, Matso etc, Gweilo has to be the worst, the taste and after taste just doesn't taste like ginger beer.

    • which one would you recommend?

      • +1

Brookvale union from that list , buts it is a really sweet brew .. similar taste to non alco ginger ale

        • +1

Brookvale is wayyyy too easy to drink. Slam down 6 pack then get hit hard haha

      • +1

brookvale and matso's are the only I will trust. Gweilo good for experimental tastes in craft beer but i wouldn't risk this. It will be cheap because it isn't selling/is shit. Moon dog was the absolute worst i have had, poured it right into the sink after the first sip

      • I reckon majority of them are just really sweet, like the James Squire, Brookvale, Ginger Resistance. I think Better Beer and Matso is a bit less sweet. The harder ones with ~7% alcohol is the least sweet.

I recently tried the Brookvale yuzu ginger beer and that is actually really nice, if you like yuzu.

    • +5

Just finished a can - love it ❤

Have tried most of those - based on recommendations here.
Unlike comments on Ozbargain, I was disappointed. Most were more like inoffensive fizzy sugary soft drinks + alcohol.

Growing up on ginger drinks, with fresh ginger from the garden & home bottled ginger beer all summer…
I look for spicy ginger flavour, that most commercial ginger beers lack.
On travels, my favourite was the spiciest GB, from Jamaica.

Gweilo has to be the worst, the taste and after taste just doesn't taste like ginger beer.

Maybe like many, you might not have appreciated a good true ginger beer!

This is not a sugary summer soft drink, but a body warming winter drink! It is definitely the spicy taste of ginger!! Taken up a notch with addition of Sichuan pepper!

Change your expectations & experience a good ginger drink!
As it states on the can, "warmly refreshing"🔥

    Gweilo

Lmao. If one called Baizuo comes out I'll bite.

    • Does this mean we can have c**n cheese aga $^%$##NO CARRIER!

      And name it gweilo. Winner

      • Its a very Asian spicy take on gweilo ginger beer! A great fusion of tastes.

  • +1

How did that name get registered.. LOL

    • +3

The brand is created by white expats in Hong Kong. The memes goes around every year when people forget. Don't forget about Redskins and Chicos from Nestle or Colgate's old name for Darlie in China.

      • Interesting, never ever seen this brand. Things we learn.

    • Brewed in Australia for Gweilo Beer International, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

    I prefer Gaijin beer

  • Doesn't gweilo in Cantonese mean…

    Hey! Wait a minute

  • $30 for a carton with 25% Cashback is worth a crack.

    • thats a lot for a crack

      • Ended up with a 4 pack and a full refund because my local store only filled the 4 and then sold the rest. Bit less of a crack.

    • [Updated] 87c ea for 1.3 standard drink after cashback & 10c can deposit

I'll update with my review tonight!

    Will be waiting…
Many people seem to have very different opinions on what makes a good ginger beer.
Some GB are wine or spirit based, flavoured with ginger. I drink fermented GB for the spicy flavour. It's what I grew up with.
Have been disappointed by local drops I've tried.

Won't pick up my carton if really bad.
Otherwise will spend $7 on 4 & try first.

  • Love it❤
(Couldn't wait for reviews as was quickly selling out!)

Not a "traditional" ginger beer, but a warming spicy alcoholic ginger drink.
The Sichuan pepper rounds out the ginger spice just right for me. Unapologetically spicy.

    1/2 can & I feel a lot warmer🔥

Great winter drink, similar to what I make (using whiskey). I consume ginger everyday.

Summer reviews wouldn't be favourable - not a light refreshing drink.

Just shouldn't call it Ginger Beer - it won't be what people expect! More like some Chinese ginger drinks.
As it states on the can, "warmly refreshing"🔥

    Lucky it's winter, I love it, has cashback, & it's on sale😊

  • Most local Brisbane stores only had 2 cartons max. Most sold very quickly.

Nearest store @18:30 with 2 cartons was 30k return. Store I picked up 1 carton from showed it had another. Staff searched - there was no other carton. Was told "You can order, but you'll only receive a refund, eventually"😜

Bought 5 cartons $150 (free delivery).
But $30 cap on CR is $132 incl GST

    • -1

Likely wont be enough stock for my order.
Liquorland near me are also OOS😢

    • Ordered 5 for free delivery
      Hoped for 2 or 3…
Sending 1😢 but with free delivery🎉

  • Really glad I saw this Deal in time.
After 1 can, feel too warm to risk another one🔥

    • We get it, you like it

      • As a much spicier Asian influenced GB, many might not.
        Likely why it's so cheap😊

It's the GB I've searched for here for years!
I no longer need to ask for suggestions in GB Deals… & end up disappointed.

        • +1

ur comments made me order a 4pk

          • +1

            @capslock janitor: Hope you enjoy.
It's very spicy - only drunk 1 tonight.
Think I've got enough for months.

  • There is almost no available information about this GB, beyond…

    Ingredients:
From site: ginger, lemongrass, lime and a dash of Sichuan pepper. This is then fermented right down to balance the flavours 4.3% ABV

    No information on sugar content.
Its not a sweet drink. Lightly carbonated.
Sugar is the second ingredient listed in other alcohol GB, after water.
Fermentation consumes sugar to produce the alcohol.

    On the can:
    Originated in Hong Kong
Brewed in Australia for Gweilo Beer International, Kowloon, Hong Kong.
And a dictionary definition of gwei-lo!
    1.3 standard drinks

    Best Before 9/4/24

    Scanning the QR code:
    Oops, no QR Code found!

    • Sugar content seems low. Can't really taste sweetness.
Poured into glass. Afterwards there was no sticky residue - almost a clean glass.

  • Picked up a carton. Terrific ginger beer. Love it. Thanks OP.

  • Liquorland was unable to fulfil the ginger beer so they gave me a $10 voucher instead.

  • Never tried before but i've pulled the trigger and will see how they compare to my other faves.
    Thanks OP.

  • I’ve tried a few alcoholic ginger beers, the worst is Bundaberg Alcoholic gb, I like their ginger beer workout alcohol, most are sweet, I do like the James squire and Brookvale. I have taken to drinking diet Bundy g/beer and add vodka… lots cheaper and less calories and I like the taste.

    • Agree - Bundaberg Alcoholic GB tasts terrible, even when offered free in Deal.

Find Bundy GB way too sweet. Tried the diet, but it wasn't for me.

I use Buderim Ginger cordial (no sugar) (syrup produced from crushed local ginger). With whiskey / vodka, it's my winter favourite. Or cold water / soda - refreshing in summer.
More cost effective, good ginger content.

Available @Woolies 750ml $4.50 or $4 on sale. Bought using spend $30 for 3000pts offer last week.

Found this GB has a good ginger flavour like that, seemingly low sugar but low fizz, with extra spiciness of Sichuan pepper. Can feel it on the lips & tongue afterwards.
At this price - stocked up for winter.

this is like someone making a green tea drink and call the brand Chinks or something.

    Pretty distasteful to be honest

    • Only racist when its one way apparently.

    • Brewed for Gweilo Beer International, Kowloon, Hong Kong.
      Complain to them or China.

  • Restocked now at some stores!
