Imagine all the Linux distros you could store!

  • Imagine all the prawn pictures I could store.

Should still be cheaper. Can’t really shuck them since warranty will be void if you do

Don't be like that, make sure to store other images of other sea creatures.

      • Sea cucumbers, specifically

        • what about the Gherkins and pickles?

          • @AMLagonda: I prefer clams and pearl oysters and the occasional snook.

Imagine 22TB data gone in a sec after disk failure.

Imagine making the same argument people made when 1GB hard drives came out in the 90s

Think I"ll need to buy two then. Maybe three :)

    • If WD made hardware RAID1 versions of this, it would be killer - it's only competition would be NASes like Synology, QNAP…etc

      • They do, actually!

But then you're dependent on using WD's software in case of a drive failure, not just shucking and restoring yourself, which could be problematic

  • i remember when hard drives were made out of rock…

    • I remember when you could walk them across the floor by moving the drive heads.

Is this shuckable? cmr or smr?

      • +3

All of the WD Easystore are shuckable. Not sure about the My Book range, though.

Edit: Quick google confirms that yes, this is shuckable.

        • Thanks, I have mainly looked at the 2.5 inch external drives which are definitely not shuckable.

          • +4

@Mechz: This is true for WD 2.5” drives, they are not sata PCBs. Direct to USB.
            Seagate are usually shuckable.
Haven’t seen a 3.5 that wasn’t shuckable. Too expensive to change the PCB as they need external power supply.

      • +3

Incorrect, all of these 3.5 inch desktop drives are shuckable.
