Victoria Cancels Hosting 2026 Commonwealth Games

Front page news Who remembered it was even in Australia?

Very disappointing for the athletes. Shame that it has to cost so much. No doubt the cost of building anything contributed to this.

I've seen one comment saying it's become a spectacle more than a sporting event. That got me thinking that I would accept it being scaled down to be less visually extravagant and more focused on sporting achievement.
What are your thoughts on cancelling the 2026 Commonwealth Games?

Edit 1: The cost of the games was originally budgeted at $2.6 billion, but new estimates is $6 billion and potential more than $7 billion. This has triggered the decision to cancel.

Edit 2: politics and finances aside, it is extremely sad for sport.

@BobLim: I agree they were spending unsustainably but also think that they might be spending on overdue infrastructure which has been neglected by other governments. I never saw previous governments do any infrastructure at all. Wish the airport rail was still go.

I reckon the degree of inflation counts as a shock to most. The boffins at treasury probably flagged it during COVID spending. But harder to see Russia Ukraine energy market disruption coming which prob amplify it.

Like you say probably a combination of costs and public perception of costs combining to change how they are steering the ship. I'm not totally cynical. They are taking austerity measures which is good but yeah dan did seem to be going a bit spend crazy toward the end. His cw games cancellation is shrewd politics to signal a change.

        • +1

          Not state government.

          It does to some extent.
Devaluing of the currency leads to higher dwelling prices.
The state government takes a percentage cut each time a dwelling changes hands (stamp duty).
So higher dwelling prices == higher revenue from stamp duty.

    • It was a year ago, 🤣🤣🤣

One of the best decisions Daniel Andrews has made. I dont see any point in any hosting any sporting event. Which is the main reason i was initially happy the commonwealth games were going to be held in Victoria ( i live in NSW). Sport is just a hobby for the high school dropouts, who couldn’t or cant hold an adult job. Covid was the best thing to happen to sport, they didn’t exist, no news about the meat heads sports people. I believe in keeping fit, but it doesn’t have to be with useless sports, exercise and good diet.

  • +1

We all know now this whole thing was a political ploy by Dan to win regional votes before the last election.

    • +1

It was an utter landslide that election. You really think this was the deciding factor?

      • You really think this was the deciding factor?

        Where did I say that?

        • +2

political ploy by Dan to win regional votes

          somewhere in here.

  • +2

Solid decision IMHO. Why spend 6-7 billion on the games just to prop up the construction industry and landlords further when everyone suffers from crazy increases to cost of living right now.

    • +1

      Why spend 6-7 billion

Most people are in agreement this has been grossly exaggerated by Dan

      • +5

Even if it was 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 BILLION - its a waste of money that is needed elsewhere.

        • +2

So why the # did he sign the contract ???

      • Who are these people exactly?

Also, Dan knew about the cost blowout 3 months ago but kept it hush, hush from everyone…

          • @jv: "Andrews has been accused of inflating the estimated cost of hosting the 12-day sporting event and ignoring options to justify cancelling the global sports event."

"Commonwealth Games Australia chief executive Craig Phillips said the forecast cost overruns, in his view, were a "gross exaggeration" and the government didn't seriously consider other options."

So saying most was an exaggeration… of course it wouldn't be so high if they weren't obsessed with hosting events in regional areas…

            • @smartazz104:

of course it wouldn't be so high if they weren't obsessed with hosting events in regional areas…

So why not move the most costly events to Melbourne where we already have the infrastructure in place?

Why not even consider that option?

    • Solid decision IMHO.

We will be subsidising the games now for whoever ends up running them… Probably to the tune of $1billion or more… Contracts are there for this reason

      • +4

Interested to hear your thoughts on the many, many Liberal Party contracts that were illegitimately signed and/or broken?

        • -3

          Deflecting……………………..

I don't give a toss what the Liberal Party does, they aren't the ones destroying our state and the future for our kids.

          • +3

@jv: Oh I see. It appears you have a short memory. So how they destroyed our state in the 90s is completely forgotten or forgiven by you? Does that mean you will likewise automatically forget or forgive Dan when he steps aside?

            • -1

              @Typical16-bitEnjoyer:

So how they destroyed our state in the 90s

Jeff Kennett is a legend. Put Vic on the global stage in sport and the arts.

              • +3

                @jv: (LOL)
And destroyed Victoria on every other level. Who cares about education and social malaise ,eh? He is the gold standard in narcissistic despotism, and if states picked up the welfare bill, he would have been dismembered by the voters. Vic still has a hangover from those days.
Kennett is the biggest hypocrite on earth. His policies destroyed so many lives, then 'HE" plays the depression card?
Ironic.I doubt he has or ever had a moral compass. Beyond Blue could and should have done a lot better in their choice

                • @Protractor:

And destroyed Victoria on every other level.

Did you come to that conclusion yourself or is it in the LNP party handbook?

  • +3

    🤣🤣🤣

Classic deflecting by Dan in his media conference.

He has no idea about how much has been spent so far.
He has no ideal about how much breaking the contract will cost us.
Yet he knows the final cost will be $7 billion?

How can he even start considering cancelling when he has no idea about how much it will cost us?

He either always intended to cancel these games or is just making stuff up as he goes along…

  • QLD next? We are 9 years away from Olympics and they are estimating cost to be $7b - as we know with these estimates, the actual cost is likely to be in excess of $10B.

BTW, going back in history when Sydney was awarded the Olympics - it was one of the 6 candidates. So how many candidates did we have for 2026 Commonwealth Games and 2032 Olympics you'd ask? Answer - One (Vic for Commonwealth and QLD for Olympics).

  • +5

Too many people judge decisions based off of the outcomes. The only thing you can do is make a decision with the information you have at the time.

Was the decision right to make initially? Maybe, maybe not, but it seems that it had support from both parties.

Now that costs blow out they are only right in reevaluating when presented with more information.

I assume they would have built in some level of contingency for cost blowouts but they would also need to allow for that with these new figures.

Some of you really need to find a hobby, rather than hate on the spokesperson for the political party you don't like.

    • +2

Absolutely! We all adjust priorities according to our budget - a lot of people bought property at peak and now struggling and trying to get out, would you call them idiots? Probably, but when you know you can't afford it, you better let it go. Dan has done exactly that, probably overcommitted when the interest rates were ATL and RBA didn't think it will rise until 2024 - but we all know the reality is very different today.

Dan might be an idiot to put his hands for the games at first place but it takes guts to back out from such things.

So why is he cutting funding to health? Cut out funding to non urgent patient transport which means ambulances will need to do their work which means less ambulance on the roads. He doesn't give a crap about our health. What a moronic comment.

  • Australia cares about the commonwealth games far, far more than anybody else. If Australia is ditching it then its time to ditch it for good. Using our hugely funded sports system to beat up on Fiji etc is a bit embarrassing anyway.

    • Well of course, how else would Australia flex how great they are when they're competing against minnows.

jv up to 59 "I hate Dan" comments. Says it all really. Troubling actually.

Show me on this bear where Dan hurt you.

There's people on watch-lists with manifesto's written in tiny scribble handwriting less obsessed with their enemies than JV is with Dan :)

      Yeah wtf?

    • Enjoy your$10 million a day debt that Dan bought you. Can't wait to see you begging on the streets when you have no job after all the businesses leave 🤣🤣🤣

      • +3

Businesses didn't "leave" during 2020-2021 when ScoMo and Federal Libs abandoned us. Why would they now? 🤣🤣🤣

You can thank ScoMo for the debt. He sat on his ass and did SFA and deflected everything to the individual states and territories. What an amazing leeeeader

The projection in conservatives is what gets me. It's like if we don't hate dan with burning passion then we must love him. Because the world is simple and black and white. Or it's not but that is how they view it.

      • "The projection in conservatives is what gets me. "

        Projection.

        • Objection!

    • Yeah, he's been going for a while
And I didn't even go searching for this example

They will most likely make a profit.

      • Yeah but how makes the actual profit, certainly not the people

Looks like Dan can't help himself when it comes to breaking funding promises…

Volleyball Australia president Craig Carracher has revealed the Victorian Government cancelled a commitment to host the 2025 beach volleyball world titles last October – claiming they pulled the pin just two weeks after agreeing to a deal worth $15 million.

    https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/commonwealth-games/victor…

“The reason they pulled the plug was never documented to us.”

    Surprise, surprise…

I don't know anybody that actually cares about the Commonwealth games unless they are involved in athletics directly.

I forget about it consistently until I'm reminded

Original cost $2.6b, cost to cancel $2b, hey we just saved $600m….thanks Dan, you're awesome

    • Cost went up to $6b though, so it's $4b saved. Works for me as I couldn't give a (profanity) about the games.

      • Obviously don't care for taking responsibility for a promise to other people, and the duty to follow through on it either.

      • +1

No money is being saved. Still going to cost 1-2 billion in cancelled contracts building venues no one really wants

  • -1

commonwealth games is a relic of colonial era, it's hardly relevant in today's day and age.

the only ones who are crying about it, apart from the innocent athletes whom I do have sympathy for, are the bureaucratic fat cats trying to justify their existence and paycheck.

    • +4

Yeah but unlike with Dan, the Colonial era contained fiscal responsibility and brought real progress for hard working people.

      • -1

the Colonial era contained fiscal responsibility and brought real progress for hard working people.

except for the colonised, I suppose

        • +1

Arguably colonialism did bring them progress, certainly in the 235 years since, more than they had for 10,000 years prior.
Where they took a step back was in representation and control, not progress.

        • It brought them more progress than the last 10,000 years before it……..

  • It would be nice if the olympics and commonwealth games got rid of all the sports that already pedal a lot of money through to it's athletes. Why is rugby, cricket and netball all in the commonwealth games? Would love to see it stripped back to the basics of raw human power and technique, track and field and swimming. It's the one time in a few years that people watch these sports. At an international level the athletes spend more time training and perfecting their discipline than many of the overpaid rugby, cricket and netball athletes. They also have to keep jobs to pay their way through competitive sports and manage their own PR, social account to foster sponsorships that may only pay for their equipment.

  • +2

So much angst from so many people who probably didn't even know the games were happening until they were cancelled

    • +1

didn't even know the games were happening until they were cancelled

      I feel called out :D

    • Completely agree.

Several billion is a lot of money for like 2 weeks of entertainment

      • It makes one wonder is the game about sports? Or money making opportunities?

Apparently it will cost in the tunes of $2B to cancel, what cost has been incurred requiring this sort of compensation?

        • what cost has been incurred requiring this sort of compensation?

          Pain and suffering obviously.

        • If there wasn't an opportunity to make money then we wouldn't have the games at all. Even the early Olympics has sponsors

          It's "up to" 2b

    • -1

Excuse making for power much? I think the paid PR boffins within Labor and the government can handle it without your assistance champ.

  • +1

Event should have been rebalanced as necessary between rural centres and Melbourne to contain costs, not cancelled.

By agreeing to host the state took on a responsibility, that involves an impact on people around the world. To cancel in the face of that is just immoral.

Typical of the Labor government in power in Victoria for some time though.

  • Now that Canada has also abandoned the game (2030), goes to show that some countries may be waiting for someone to make the first move.
