Uncle Tobys Oats Quick, 1kg - perfect for these winter mornings and no minimum purchase requirement. Was cheaper on Amazon back in June but currently a good deal compared to Coles and Woolworths: -

** Coles currently sell for $5.00 and https://www.coles.com.au/product/uncle-tobys-quick-oats-porr…
** Woolworths for $5.00 https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/37562/uncl…

Woolworths Quick Oats 750g $1.40. Everyday low price.

Funnily enough, we bought these after running out of our last pack of Uncle Toby's because of the price, and I have to say that they're nowhere near as good. When heated for the same time they end up more clumpy and chewy than Uncle Toby's using the exact same method.

I forgot to link the page. 4.5 from 900 ratings.

Maybe you need to adjust your cooking method.

I don’t use the quick oats often but the rolled oats are great. And they now come in a 1.5kg value pack.

I wish these were just the same thing in different packets but unfortunately they're not. The Uncle Tobys ones are rolled much thinner and for some reason produce a much creamier porridge when made with milk. The Woolies ones are still fine to eat but after comparing both the Uncle Tobys ones are worth the extra to me when they're half price. At full price I usually just settle for the Woolies ones though.

@thestig: Trick is to soak it for longer. But you need alot more liquid. Soak at least half an hour in the liquid. Generally I use water with the Woolies brand. After microwave top it up with the milk. Which will cool it down to the desired temperature and good to go. It'll turn out just as creamy.

@thestig: This is my sentiment, too. I load up on Uncle Toby's when I can. Just bought 5 boxes from this deal, lol. A year's worth of oats for just over a tenner, bargain!

Agree. Ime Ww (normal) rolled oats are perfectly fine for making anything which needs good oats. Haven't used UT's for years so can't comment on their quality. Said in a similar deal previously that I've found the Ww oats to be better than Adli's as far as flake size and 'fragmentation" in the bag go.

          • @Igaf: Stick the normal oats in a food processor and you end up with uick oats too.

@Spendmore: same idea as "broken rice"to me,
why would i buy a bag of those tiny fragments when i could crush some regular long grain .
long grains being more versatile to have too

        • cheapers than aldi rolled oats i bought today [email protected]

might go woolies instead after that

edit- it appears Coles have come with their own equiv pack @ 0.17c per unit

Had bad experiences with the Coles brand quick oats; they give off a burnt cardboard smell whether cooked in the microwave or stove, the same way I prepare Uncle Toby's. Tried with several different packs so not a one-off.

      • They’re cut differently. Rolled oats = whole oats. Quick oats = crushed oats.

Edit: Sorry steamed and rolled differently. citation

Rolled are steamed and flattened, quick oats are chopped much more finely.

(Not sure if quick are also steamed)

Steel cut oats are the "least processed", and are roughly chopped but not steamed. You can't really cook them in the microwave. But when cooked on the stove in the traditional way, they're practically an entirely different food they're so good.

            @Wolfenstein98k: Steel cut oats ftw
I “cook” mine in a thermos with boiling water out of the kettle. No stove needed.

            • @Pecan: How long do you let them sit for?

              • +4

@sween64: I eat mine at lunchtime, so I’ll set it up at around 8am and they’re ready by noon. I warm the thermos up with a bit of hot water first, then add the oats and boiling water. Close lid. When I’m ready to eat it, I transfer the oats to a bowl, add milk and maple syrup and into the microwave for a minute just to warm them up as the milk is cold.

If you wanted to eat them for breakfast, set it up before you go to bed and let them sit overnight.

                • +4

@Pecan: I do overnight oats with milk, oats, yoghurt, maple syrup, dates and cinnamon. They chill in the fridge and it's a cold meal. I might try hot oats next week. Thanks.

          • @Wolfenstein98k: Steel cut oats are the only form I can eat as a Typo 2 diabetic. I cook up a whole pot and portion it over 5 days. This is the recipe I swear by

I tried quick one and I had to mixed them with Uncle Toby's quick Oats otherwise too hard to finish it.

    • I can't speak for the woolies ones but the Coles ones aren't the same quality. Definately paying less for bottom of the barrel stock.

    • I've tried all the cheaper ones and more expensive ones like Carman's but in the end Toby's rolled oats in the creamiest. That's after months of switching brands

  • Showing as $4.50 now

I actually rate Aldi’s quick oats after eating these for years.

    • Yep, looks like the deal's dead.
