I bought this last time and found it kind of sucks. Design of the handle makes it impossible to get a close shave. Am I the only one? It is too "safe". Its hard to cut yourself, but its hard to get a close shave.

I don't have this issue with my shicke one.

Also the design is rather cheap, you have to take apart the entire thing to change the blade. It doesnt have a grip that opens up.

Yep, I agree. Bought this a couple of months back, and I'm very disappointed. It is too safe, to the extent that it is impossible to get a close shave. Went back to Schick. Not to mention that the weight balance of the handle is very unyielding, unless you have small hands.

    • Mine works ok, but as a left handed person, the design on the handle makes it kind of slip a bit and hard to grab, so i need too have my hands very dry when using it.

      • +2

Don't think it's anything to do with being left handed, it is symmetrical after all. But the weight of the handle, combined with being smooth, does make it hard to use.

        • The knurling is only one direction, so in theory it's easier for it to slip in one direction than the other. That being said, I'm a leftie too and have had no issues using it even in the shower (except that it gives a shit shave, as others have mentioned)

I had the same experience and it just didn’t work for me either. Never gives a close shave, doesn’t matter how many times I go over the area. I tried it a few times and then it went straight to bin.

Also it’s quite heavy and small so if you have big hands, you may find it slippery.

    • I get a pretty close shave, but I don't like the weight of the handle and it gets slippery. Dropped it a number of times. Also hate taking it apart/changing the blade on it, always feel like I will slice my finger open..

Not sure why you're not getting a close shave but the angle makes a difference and with double edged razors, it pays to do two passes. Also you have to pay attention to the grain of your hairs.

Lastly, the ones with the articulating holders are much more expensive.

I've been using my merker for 10 years now and it's been great. You get used to where you're meant to touch it to swap blades with time, and you really only swap once a week or whatever it is. You would only hold it on the short edge where the blade isn't sharp for example. My only gripe is it does take a little longer than say electric.

      • What angle do you suggest? I've tried all sorts and it just doesnt work.

I got a shick double edged razor from Aldi for $10 some years back and it works fantastic. It has the articulating holder too

I'm not hating on double edged razors, just this one in particular seems to suck

        • Fair enough. I've only used two over the last couple decades so maybe your issue is specific to this one. I thought you might be new to DE razors.

I found the safest is to keep the blade shallow and as you increase angle, (angle blade into skin) finding that sweet spot to get aggressive cut but not too much angle is the trick. I found 2 passes is best but can get away with one if I was in a rush.

        • Grab something better like a Merkur Futur that you can adjust the angle on.

    • Have you tried not fully tightening it? I've found this works for me.

      • Interesting, thanks I'll give it a go!

    • Agree with @Boioioioi - hard to hold, and you have to do 2-3 passes for a close-ish shave. Basic disposable razors are better/quicker. Whilst this is Ozbargain, the saving of a couple of dollars over using disposable razors doesn't warrant the frustration/time

      • The frustrations are limited to this model though. You should try an alternative double edged razor. I got a schick one from Aldi for $10 a few years back and its awesome. Feels good to not be throwing away plastic with disposable razors all the time.

Bought this last time and initially didnt have a strong opinion either way. It was good, close shaving for me but would cut a bit more.
Changed blades to another brand and found it knicked me a lot less and a closer shave. Was travelling recently and took my 5 blade razor with a brand new blade and didnt realise how much difference it was!

The learning curve on these things take awhile, but not that long. Each shave takes a little more time but I would say it is worth the effort. Not sure what other posters are talking about but i get a nice close shave.

    • What blades do you use? I see a lot of cheap ones on Amazon but I can't see any differences between them.

      • I use Astra blades. Prefer them over the supplied Gillette blades. Very popular and well priced, but made in Russia.

        • I'm nearly at the end of my 200(?) Astra ones. But f Russia so next ones will probably be back to Shark

Highly recomend getting a sampler. I ended up loving the feather blades myself, but something like this gives you a lot of choice to find the best blade for your hair type and skin type.

  • I just cracked mine open this week after the Aldi one I had was dropped and ruined. I'm hoping this still gives a close shave and isn't that bad with cuts. It was sometimes a blood bath with my other one.

    • Hey thats funny I bought this one for literally the same reason! Dropped and bent my shick one from aldi. But Alas I continue to use my aldi one on the good side it has left

      • Mine had previously survived a few drops but this time it chipped part of the clip so it had to binned!

    • I used a DE for a few years but recently started using a cut throat similar to this one. I am finding I get a closer shave with less knicks with the cut throat style despite being more careful when using it.

As other posters have commented the trick to closeness with either I found was in technique. You need to learn to keep the correct angle of attack as you traverse the varying contours of your noggin. 😉

The DE worked so well that my wife now uses my old one for her legs. This saves us on the cost of blades especially as I can buy blades that work for both cut throat and DE in bulk. 🙂

  • I bought this at Chemist Warehouse after the Amazon sales ran out. I find it to be very good. Much better than the Chinese knock off I had before. Less knicks on my face and blades last longer.

  • Any idea how this compares to the Merkur 34C looking at getting a DE shaver for my girlfriend to use want something that's quite mild for her

  • For those who found it didn’t give a close shave double check the base plate is screwed in the right side up. First time I used it I thought it was useless but once I flipped the base plate it works a treat.
