    Bought this last time.

Not going back to cartridge blades.

Extremely easy to use with good weight. Try some other brands of blades to feel which suits you.

    • +6

Absolutely. Every man should try this to see if it works for you. The shave is clean and the savings are crazy.

      • +2

Switched over a couple Christmases ago when I got a set from my wife. I haven't calculated how much I've saved on cartridges, but yeah it's heaps

        • +5

I read that as you got yourself a set for your wife for Christmas, lol. I had so many questions.

          • +2

@zubzub: Haha same. I had to do a double take.

      • +1

Don't think this work for real hairy men.

  • Where can one buy these blades on their own…?

I've tried a few different ones and I keep coming back to these ones…

    • +1

I bought this last year. I have only used maybe 25 blades so far.

ASTRA Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades, 100 Blades (20 x 5) https://amzn.asia/d/f2sCL3A

      • I bought what I thought was 'a years supply' of these, turns out it's a lifetime supply as they hold an edge for so long.

    • +1

Amazon, but they're not cheap: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08FNBT968/

    • +1

No need to buy the expensive Gillette branded razors.
This is what I got a year ago.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B007FQFIK4/ref=ppx_yo_d…

      • How do these compare to the KingG's?

I've tried Astra's and I find they are scratchy and dont last as long (I normally get 5 ish shaves out of a KingG)

    • Ebay, Amazon. The vshod store is good.
Anywhere but the supermarkets which have bad blades for insane price, they cant charge $1 a pack because it will damage the market of their $30 mach3 refills if people see the real price difference.
Gillette and other modern shaving brands have a deliberate campaign to sabotage classic DE shaving, since there is no money in every man buying one handle a decade and $10 of blades a year.

    • I buy mine from the local Indian grocer because the gillette ones are ridiculously expensive at coles/woolies.

  • +12

Great handle. Dont forget that Astra blades are one of ozb favourite refill blades!

    • +2

Astra is a Russian brand though so good to be aware of that if you dont wanna support that country.

      • +16

Smooth brain logic. You’ll still happily buy stuff from America even after all the countries they’ve invaded right? Did you forget that Australia also invaded Iraq and Afghanistan?

        • +16

whataboutism much. Yes America and Australia have done some bad things in the past and likely to in the future but I trust these will eventually be exposed and corrected in the future. But Russia is currently right now at this moment killing innocents for 1 man greed, so I guess every little bit helps.

          • +4

            @Laz167:

Yes America and Australia have done some bad things in the past and likely to in the future but I trust these will eventually be exposed and corrected in the future.

            why would you believe that

          • +2

@Laz167: smooth brain for saying "support that country" like as if 100% of Russians support the invasion, or are even allowed to talk about it.

          • @Laz167: So geopolitics isn't your strong suit either then?

        • +6

Russia is wholesale torturing, raping, pillaging, flooding towns, sending waves of their own people to death because they are ethnic minorities. You think I should look the other way because merica bad? pathetic

          • @gakko: According to the main stream media🤔

          • @gakko: Yeah those wacky Russians, blowing up their own dams and their own pipeplines, what a silly bunch they are!

        • +8

Even if you disagree, you can surely appreciate why people would want to know about this. Thanks @gakko for sharing relevant information.

          • -4

@MaxStinge: So what were the sources of that information?

I am neither pro nor against Russia, but I am against wars, all of them and from I've seen most peoples knowledge on this conflict is simply what they regurgitate from the media, and we should all know by now how trustworthy and honest they are. Reminds me of what Orwell noted when he was off covering the Spanish war and spend months embedded in the fighting until he was shot in the neck and had time to read newspapers while recovering in hospital:

"Early in life I have noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper, but in Spain, for the first time, I saw newspaper reports which did not bear any relation to the facts, not even the relationship which is implied in an ordinary lie. I saw great battles reported where there had been no fighting, and complete silence where hundreds of men had been killed. I saw troops who had fought bravely denounced as cowards and traitors, and others who had never seen a shot fired hailed as the heroes of imaginary victories; and I saw newspapers in London retailing these lies and eager intellectuals building emotional superstructures over events that had never happened. I saw, in fact, history being written not in terms of what happened but of what ought to have happened according to various ‘party lines’. "

I was talking to a lady a couple of weeks back who had just called her Friend in Kiev to see how they were doing because she was worried from all the reports being shown on out TV's. The friend had no idea what she was talking about and said that they were completely safe and that life was going on as normal.

And if you want in informed opinion on the latest dam destruction I've found this guy to be quite sensible.

            https://youtu.be/rjocQFG6TcQ

So as I said, I am against all wars as it's always the innocent that pay the price but I'm also not that naive that I still believe there are 'good guys' and 'bad guys' when it come to governments.

What has this got to do with shaving? Beats me, I have a couple of brands of Russian made blades and they are quite good, I also use Kapsersky AV which is open source (last time I checked) so anyone who things Putin is watching what you do online can have some peace of mind.

            • -3

@EightImmortals: Mate, most of the people here are NPC's.

If the average exists, that means around half the population is less than average.

They thrive on the free "news" the government feeds their half brains, never questioning anything because they are incapable.

              • -1

@Outsider: Yeah I know, but there are also people browsing who would like to expand their views a bit so I don't mind. :)

            • +3

@EightImmortals: If you can't rely on mainstream news, what makes you think you can rely news from YouTube ?

It's fine for you to question everything and investigate what you think is the "truth", but at the very least we all know Russia was the one that started the war

              • +1

@ilikeblue: Those are the ones that align with his particular bias' and the rest is for sheeple.

I always wonder why people who take blogs as gospel think everyone else takes mainstream as gospel. Its pretty hard projection.

              • @ilikeblue: But do we know WHY they started?

It's like a lot of the old folk blame Japan for starting a war with the U.S. by attacking Pearl harbour but ignoring the fact that the U.S. cut off their oil supplies and pinched their money giving them all the justification they needed, yet Japan was the bad guy even though the U.S. had been attacking them militarily since the 1800's at least.

Same thing with this stoush, the yanks (OK 'NATO', but NATO is America for all intents anyway) has been circling Russia and China with missile bases for years and using Ukraine as the proxy they needed to poke the bear just too many times. Do any of us have ALL the facts? Not for second, but as I said if people are so naive as to still believe in 'good' governments and 'bad' governments then they have a very shock coming.

      • +2

An honest Russian steel producer making blades for an American brand. I see no harm.

        • -7

Honest & Russian in the same line?!! Lol

          • +13

            @RGuy7865: Racist

          • +1

@RGuy7865: My bothers wife is Russian. Lovely woman, intelligent, creative and great mum. Been suffering a lot anxiety over the last year or so because of tools who can't think for themselves and only do and think what their daily programming tells them to do and think.

Hey guess what, the Russian people have the same amount of control over what their government does as we do over ours.

            • @EightImmortals: My cousin sister married a Russian guy, guess what? he turned out to be an educated, hardworking and intelligent young man. Not the stereotypical Russian guy from movies. But that's not my point. The context was about goods made by some "honest" Russian business. You should be dilusional to think that you can operate a successful business in a country like Russia without supporting that lunatic and his government ruling the country nowadays. Just like Germans and Japanese people were innocent but got killed due to their lunatic leadership, Russian people are suffering too. Some tools get triggered while they read anything that crises "Russian" leadership. Again read the context please, it's not about Russian people or the culture, we are talking about the lunatic, the business men and oligarchs supporting him.

              • @RGuy7865: You mean just like business men and oligarchs everywhere?

Why single out Russia? They are hardly the worst examples of abuses and warmongering you offer up?

        • +4

It’s strange how one Russian guy does something and so we’re told we must punish every Russian just going about their business completely uninvolved. In any other context this is seen as a highly offensive act.

As people have highlighted above, Australians have done very bad things, Americans have and continue to do bad things. We see one side of propaganda.

How about we all condemn all of the bad any country does but we just leave the innocent people of the same country or race alone and don’t judge them for it; just as we ourselves would like to not be judged for any of the bad things Australians have done.

          • @rhino015: Read the context before jumping around crying judgement. It was about Russian businesses not people or culture. I urge you to read and understand the context before pulling your trigger.

            • @RGuy7865: How do businesses not involve the livelihoods of people? What if everyone boycotted your work because some other Australian did something they didn’t like? Do you actually not see the problem with that? Also how can you imply Russian businesses aren’t honest without implying Russian people aren’t honest?

      • +1

BIC blades are made in Greece and are of a comparable quality and price.

        • Personally, I use the Wilkinson Sword Classic blades. Made in Germany, and quite affordable when ordered in bulk from Connaught Shaving.

          • @axyh: Thanks. My experience with Wilkinson was great but Shavershop don’t typically stock it.

      • +8

Did a bit of digging. Turns out Astra Blades are made by P&G Gillette in St Petersburg, Russia. Which is the same factory producing the razors included in this King C Gillette product. So if you're offended by an American company, owned by shareholders/investors, operating a factory in Russia, making you blades… Then stay away from probably a lot of products.

      • ASTRA Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades, 100 Blades (20 x 5) https://amzn.asia/d/f2sCL3A

      • Russian factory is getting like 5c a blade at best and they are being made on 50 year old soviet era machines and factory with very few staff. I dont think its doing much to boost their economy. If anything it is just helping a few families put food on the table.

    • +1

Astra are the only ones that work for me. And $10 for 100

      • Where are they $10? I just bought 100 on eBay for $15.99 (but will get $10 TopCashback)

        • Slight exaggeration. the $15.99 ones on Ebay come down to $10.99 with the monthly $5 voucher.

      • Where do you buy them from?

    • i use derby, they are fantastic

  • +1

I am now using these with Derby blades about $12 for 100 blades.

  • +4

Moving back to cave in next 20 years

    • +8

Looking at my income and how the market is, I at least hope cave market ia affordable for me.

  • These Gillette blades were horrible especially considering their price. Will never use them again over astras but is still a good deal for the DE razor.

  • +1

The only bargain is these, 100 blades for less than $20
I'd say they are on par or better than Gillette.

    • Agreed

    • +4

But on EBay and use your $5 eBay plus voucher if you have one. Makes them $10

      • I see a listing of $17.90?

      • ebay plus $5 voucher has min spend of $50

        • On my side it’s saying you get 1 x $5 voucher off minimum spend $15 each month

  • Bought in the last deal. The blades don't seem to last long, but I do like this one as a change from the disposables which are expensive and cause irritation.

  • Stupid question. How long does the handle last? I mean it clearly will last ages but any point getting two to keep one as a backup?

    • +4

      no not really.

    • +6

You can pass on to next generation

    • +5

I’ve been using my Edwin Jagger for over a decade now and it still looks brand new

    • +2

Long enough to measure in decades I'd imagine.

    • if you drop it - not very long.

    • +1

I'm using my grandpa's. There's not really anything to break or wear out

      • +2

Older razors were almost exclusively nickel plated brass. Newer razors are often chromed zinc alloy.

The newer razors are fine as long as the coating stays intact. But even a small, invisible fissure will lead to a quick degradation of the underlying metal.

I have a 1950s-era razor handed down from my grandfather that works perfectly. But a couple of my 2000s-era razors are starting to show the telltale signs of the coating bubbling, which suggests that the underlying zinc alloy is on its way out.

I’ve decided to stick to brass and stainless razors in future.

        • Rockwell have a couple of SS ones. Been eyeing off their SS T2 but a bit exe right now.

    • People buy 50yo+ ones to use!

    • I dropped mine and bent one side, so bought a second for backup now

    • Until you drop it and it lands a bad way.
Theres lots from China at the same price every day, most men in the world still use them, the fancy Mach69 50 blades are a marketing gimmick for rich countries.
I recommend the Chinese butterfly mechanisms over these, they flush out and swap blades so easy.

  • -2

Ah! Why would one use these over the Mach 3's or Mach 5's? I quit using these 18-20 years ago for contemporary ones and no looking back. No regrets!

    • +2

I normally use mach 3, just got Costco 20 pack $42.99 on sale atm but I wouldn’t mind trying this out to see if it’s better for my shaving

      • Mach 3 is my go to kit too. I haven't found anything better yet. 5 blade ones viz. Fusion 5 are a hassle to clean post use as the spacial distance between the blades are too close. But that may be an individual thing bec's of my rough / hard hair growth.

        • yeah agreed, tbh i haven't tried mach 5 i guess i just stuck with mach 3 and it just does the job lol but yeah i should try others to see how it feels.
i bought this King C. Gillette since its on sale so lets see how it goes hehe

    • Because Mach 3/5s are horrendously expensive? They're what $3-6 a single cartridge? Plus they create lots of waste in the landfill and they don't get as close a shave as a double edge?

I went from my Mach 5 to straight razor and then to safety razor, I wouldn't turn back at this point. I love the feeling of this style of shaving and the closeness of shave.

  • +2

I love my King C shaver and Astra 100 packs. I picked up at full price after reading comments from the last sale that expiried. I used to use the aldi $8 for 4 blades for at least 10 years. I've used 3 blades since April 15th, I shave twice a week. I'm saving the money now and the cut is much much better once you get the hang of it. I tried one Astra and couldn't tell the difference from the included King C blades.

  • Any good shaving cream you would recommend?

    • +1

Proraso sandalwood. bought mine from beardandblade.com.au

    • +1

Try different products. I found shaving cream too light, and shaving oil too thick, and settled on just using body wash after soaking in the shower for 5 mins. But it depends on the combination of handle and blade so what works for one person won't suit everyone.

    • +5

Having gone through just about every Proraso option over the last 10+ years, along with plenty of others, I have settled on this stuff as my absolute favourite: https://www.igashop.com.au/product/sanofi-shave-cream-361260

It lathers up really well with either a brush or just hand application, provides a smooth surface for the razor to glide across, smells nice and costs less than $3!

You can buy it at just about any chemist or supermarket and it looks hilariously generic, but it is amazing.

    • +1

I use a shaving stick; compact and low effort, let's for ages. Arko is the one I'm using now

    • +1

Body Shop Aloe is quite good, a little goes a long way.

      https://www.thebodyshop.com/en-au/face/mens-grooming/maca-ro…

Also Washpool, which is an Aussie outfit are quite good. One tub lasts about a year doing 3-4 shaves a week.

      https://www.washpool.com.au/shaving-soaps/

  • made of brass or zinc die cast .
    ?

  • Been using this for a few months and in my experience it is significantly better than the Schick double edge razor (Butterfly close) which I got from ALDI a while back. Very happy.
