[VIC] Free Exhaust Fan Back Draft Damper/Stopper & Free Installation @ Time to Save

82
Free Exhaust Fan Seals for Victorian Households

Air sealing or covering of exhaust fan vents is a part of weatherizing or weather-proofing plan of the homeowners.

Many residential properties in Victoria have exhaust fans either loosely fitted to ceiling / windows or exhaust fan vents without covers / air seals (otherwise known as back draft stoppers).

Open exhaust fans vents or gaps must be sealed with draft stoppers to maintain a set humidity and temperature level inside your home.

If you’re a Victorian household, get your exhaust fans covered and sealed with draft stoppers for free under the VEU (Victorian Energy Upgrades) program.

We install free exhaust fan seals under the VEU (Victorian Energy Upgrades) program.

How long is the install? 15-20mins?

  • 15 to 30 minutes max.

    • -7

Wow, that must take a long time to put the ladder in place and climb into the roof cavity and drop it in.

      • +1

What a stupid and useless comment

  • +1

Are there any added services to install the exhaust piping to roof cavity or roof? Of course with added fees.

    • Yes.

    • Not sure you'll want to trust these installers with anything more than installing this slip on. Eve if the work is outsourced to a carpenter, it will be the cheapest possible contractor they can find

  • +2

Caution with these things. Some are a terrible design/install causing the backdraft to slam it open and closed in windy situations. It's incredibly frustrating when it's going on in your ensuite while you're trying to sleep.

    • In windy situations, the damper should remain closed. Unless you have kept a window/door open, the dampers shall remain closed.

      • +3

It should but it doesn't in some cases. I'm speaking from experience. Wind rushing past the outer vent can cause suction which opens and closes the flaps on the draft stopers. I've read of people adding rubber to dampen the noise. I'm sure many don't experience it so it's likely dependent on where the vent leads to the outside.

I second that. The location of exhaust fans and orientation of the building might play a role.

    • I used cloth tape around the lip edge with mine as we never close the bathroom window due to airlow etc. Worked a treat and is silent. EG: https://www.repco.com.au/car-care-panel/adhesives-sealants/t…

        Thanks I'll look into it

If this was DIY, I'd be all over it. NOT gonna have an untrusted tradie in my roofspace.

Like all these govt "freebies", LET THE HOMEOWNER DO IT.

    • +2

Totally - most likely an 'installer' IE student with NFI

    • +3

Gotta keep the unqualified "tradies" in business lol, all these schemes are a rort.

    • They are DIY. I purchased one (In Adelaide) climbed into the roof and they simply drop onto the fan vent. No need to have a pro do this. Also they take less than 5mins to install. Took me longer to climb into the roof.

It is crap that they won't let the homeowner install it.

      • They install them from below.

        • +2

That isn't exactly a smart way to do it. Lots of stuffing around. Must also fold up, making it flimsy I guess. How are you going to fit a round object that is wider than the hole for the fan into the ceiling if it is bigger than the hole?
          This is what used: https://tighthouse.com.au/products/exhaust-tight-fan-draught…

It was way bigger than the hole, so it sat flush and prevents backdraft along the bottom.

      • Where you buy yours from?

      • Did it perhaps take you 5 mins to grab the ladder, set it up, and get onto the roof. Then another 5 mins installing. And would you say another 5 mins to come down from the roof, pack the ladder, and put it away? So maybe it took 15 mins total to install?

  • "Ceiling / attic access is not required (can be installed from below)"

    • How do you install from below OP? I have a very similar exhaust fan seal as per website and I don’t remember it being foldable?

      • remove the fan, install and screw in the cover, replace the fan.

  • +1

Keep in mind your fan won't work as well with this. So the fan will have to stay on longer to move the same amount of air, which means you will use more power

    • +1. Mine takes longer to work, it does work but restricts the air a bit.

      • I bought a similar if not exact same one as per OP’s website and it works really well. It’s sturdy yet doesn’t restrict the air.

  • Where to buy cheap online if not in VIC?

Cheapest is Clipsal DraftStoppa $64 delivered @ EBay plus

      • +1

        Came to $62 delivered.

I can see why yours would be noisy with a single flap vs the OP double flap. I think it would also be less efficient at moving air when exhaust is on being heavier as a single flap…

        • ITs very thin and isnt loud now.

          • @Josh086: Noted. These things are expensive for what they are. If you had to buy multiple of these, as likely in an average home, it becomes very expensive indeed.

  • +3

They will never ever stop calling you if you give out your details.
Even after the job is done. Don’t be me.

  • Shouldnt all bathroom/toilet fans be vented to the house exterior, instead of the roof space?

  • +2

I get multiple calls from India a day begging me to install these. And they are so rude too. When I tell them I already have them, it's an instant hang up. No goodbye or ok thanks for your time. And I get multiple calls from the same number, different operator. So they're not even keeping a record of who they've already called. They keep calling me again until I blocked their number.

    • We don't cold call a customer. Can you share the number you got the call from?
