  • There will be only 1 buyer that can use the code?!

    • The codes for the instant deals are generic.

I was just reading off what you've posted above 😀

    Ring subscription.. no thanks

    • Does it work ok without subscription?

      • +2

They do, you just can't save video for future viewing, you still get notifications, just video can only be viewed live. There's probably other things you get if subscribed.

      Generic comment yawn

      • Pretty much, Ring has been around for years with subscriptions and people are like, oh wow, it's a deal breaker lol

  • We have it. Good camera and the app is not bad. The motion sensing is a bit sensitive but it caught a few cats and possums we have around our place at night.

    Only problem is the subscription…

    • +1

Yes I have 2 brush tailed possums that have lived on the property since the drought before the 19 bushfires. They come most nights. They have learned to set off the side floodlight cam so I come out and give them pats and some fruit lol.

Price is great but subscription is killing it. I am holding out for a Reolink or Eufy:

    https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/3/23623523/ring-alarm-camera…

    • Thanks for the heads up.
Assume those other brands don't have a subscription?

      • They do if you want cloud.

      • +3

As mentioned only for cloud storage. If you are happy with local storage or have a NAS, there is no need for a subscription.

Ring connects directly to the cloud and won't work without internet. Which also means, Amazon can decide to remove more "free" features in the future.

Reolink you could run completely local for example, you don't even have to connect it to the internet. So you would never lose functionality.

      • Most people use local storage via SD card or DVR

Having both Ring and Eufy, I think Ring offers better user experience. $50 per year per cam worth for me. I suggest getting one Ring cam for the front, and for the rest, you can opt for non-subscription cams.

      • Totally, if it's worth it to you, buy it. That seems expected that a subscription camera from one of the biggest companies in the world has a better user experience.

It might also depend how much time you like to spend on it and how tech savvy you are. I enjoy integrating things with Home Assistant, setting it up to record to my Synology NAS etc.

From that perspective, it is not worth it to me to pay 60 dollars a year, for probably the next 10 years, to get 1 camera with a better user experience and easier set up.

  • Related, but does anyone have non-camera floodlight recommendations? I just want some sensor lights around the house but finding options pretty limited (or ugly af options).

    • Do you need it to be weatherproof? Do you want it wired/solar/battery?

    • Stay clear of any Brilliant lighting floodlight products. Really poor setup and hard to balance the time on, light sensitivity and movement sensitivity.

    • +1

my recommendation is to get installer to supply and install separate 240v sensor. The ones that are built into floodlights are generally pretty rubbish and either super sensitive, or not sensitive enough, or have limited setting options.

      • looks very bright!! I'm thinking of getting 240v outdoor powerpoints installed under the eaves so when/if lights break in the future I can just unplug, throw it out and put a new one in and plug it in myself…

        • i have a tiled roof and just got the electrician to install a plug base in the roof space on top of the eaves
          looks cleaner imo

          • @follow: that's a good idea, just slid the tile up and put it in there? I have sarking so imagine that won't be as simple.

            • @dammit: I'd imagine the electrician would just cut a hole which would be less than ideal. your original idea sounds better in that situation.

People complained about paying for the subscription. I used quit a few different camera with free software but the ring has by far the best interface and function compared to the others. Most importantly is ring’s system is very reliable.

    • Yeah it's $150 a year subscription if you have this and say a doorbell camera, so basically every year and a bit you are paying for another one of these.

That's why people prefer eufy and others that allow all the same features, but stored locally on a SD card that most people have laying around.

      • +2

Most people doesn’t know with the $150 dollars per year subscription gives you extended warranty and theft protection as long as you are continuously subscribed. I had my camera failed due to storm damage after 4 years of owning it and Ring just replace me with a brand new one with minimum hassle. So if you have 3 or more ring camera that’s a bargain.

        • +3

Each to their own I guess, I've had my Eufys for a few years now, through many storms and no issues yet. So I guess I've got $450 saved in "subscription fees" so far, so even if one was to fail I could replace it and still be well in front.

        • If you have 3 or more non ring cameras, you're saving hundreds a year on subscriptions, so no, it's not a bargain.

  • Ready to buy a set of eufy if any deals on 😉

  • +2

Obligatory "Ring accesses your cameras without your permission or knowledge and shares the results with law enforcement without a warrant" warning. Horrible company, strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

If you don't care about your privacy or civil liberties then… great deal I guess?

    • +1

Yeah - This 100%. Subscription fees are annoying but the real deal breaker is giving these companies access to your data.

  • +1

I have a Ring doorbell which I have to pay an annual fee to view the recorded videos. Otherwise, each time you receive a notification, by the time you open it, mostly the deliveryman has already left & you won't know who the notification was for. Annual subscription is either $49 or $50 for each device! Personally, if I had known about the annual subscription, I won't buy it! They are so many other products that doesn't require subscription. Perhaps best to find out in details directly from ring website.

  • I think these will require an electrician to install ($$$)

    • legally?

      • For insurance purposes

  • +4

The Ring subscription is good value to have footage up to 180 days. The plus plan at $150/year for multiple cameras also extends the hardware warranty. Worth it.

  • +2

$150/year for any number of cameras + hardware warranty seems like a great deal.

I use Google Nest Aware with 8 cameras around the house for $180/year, but don't get any additional hardware warranty.

I still prefer the Google ecosystem, but this is good value.

    • Yes the Ring system I find is excellent. I've got most of their cameras, the 2 floodlight cameras have been on the west and northwest sides of the house in full sun for 6 years and not missed a beat.

They integrate well, I have a thumbnail pop up on the TVs when motion is detected with the option to view it full screen. I have Hue lights around the house come on with a different colour depending what camera was triggered. Can turn on other outside lights with motion.

So for me the $150/yr is good value with lifetime warranty.

      • What do you integrate the Ring system with? TVs running android/Google TV? Any other display devices and speakers around the house? Just curious.
