Genuine question regarding these as I've got a pair from a previous deal and like em. How does one tie them so they don't come undone? Yes this sounds like a stupid question.

    • Not stupid, I had the same issue. Although these shoe laces look different. I had to change the ones one my other shoes.

    • +12

      Double knot.

    • +4

I find the double loop method before tightening the bunny ears never comes undone. See it here:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deymL_kfHuk

I also cross over the laces twice before tying the knot - one cross over at the end of the normal holes and another cross over after you've looped through the metal eyelets on the sides. This helps keep the boot stable around the ankle.

    • +3

I don’t know if I can explain it properly but this technique might work:

When tying shoe laces with the “over and under loop” in the beginning, try doing this the other way around. Example, so if you usually do the left side over; do the right side over instead (or vice versa).

Then how ever you normally loop the bunny ears, do as normal.

You will know you performed it correctly when the loops end up being perpendicular to the direction of your shoe.

      • That's the way my wife ties her shoes and I'm forever tying them correctly when they come undone 5 minutes later.

I can't get her to change her way as it is so deeply embedded in her brain. 20 years trying. I may need another 20 years.

There's a theory about why it is so hard to change bad habits.

Btw. That doesn't work because the knot isn't style locking that way.

    • +3

There's also the Berluti Knot which also doubles as a really nice looking knot.
It's similar to the usual way but you cross the bunny ears together with each other.

Otherwise just maybe change the laces.

      • Can Concur… didn't see this before I posted.

      • That is a nice looking knot.

    • Tuck both loops and both flugelbinders back into the crossed laces

    • +1

Look up the Berluti Knot… Mostly used for dress shoes, but I use nothing else now as it always stays put and can be released with a simple tug on either aglet.

    • I use Salomon Quicklaces for my (Adidas) hiking shoes and cannot recommend them enough. Cheap and do a really solid job, never having to worry about lacing ever again. For anyone buying hiking shoes, snow boots, etc, get these. A lot of snowboard boots come with this type of lacing so anyone who is familiar with them will tell you the same. You will thank me later.

      • This! I've got a pair of the Salomon Xa Pro 3D V8 (also from Anaconda) that come with this style of 'lace'.

I'm always pulling them on/off coming in/out of the house, and these are a life saver.

    • this helped me, hopefully you too.

    What width are these?

    • +9

In general Salomon are relatively narrow, not sure abou this specific model

      • +1

        Salomon are relatively narrow

        Thanks…

        • +6

Can confirm they are narrow - only very few salomon shoes are offered in 2E widths and so the selection is very limited with us wide-footed humans

          • @pongky: Thanks i've got a wide foot too. glad I saw your message as I was going to order some.

      • I hear a lot of suggestions to go up a size. Would you suggest upsizing 0.5 or 1?

    • I have wide feet. Or at least narrow at the back and wide at the front. Salomon’s fit me great.

  • +1

Is sizing in US or UK. Website not clear

  • Can't see these for sale anywhere else.

  • +10

Apply 'WELCOME10' at checkout for a further $10 off for first time anaconda accounts (or your newest one). Otherwise I'm hoping for the best on a US sizing (this was my best guess) and good quality hiking shoe. Thanks OP.

  • Anyone comment on the sizing from the last deal? Run true?

    • Im waering other pair I bought from them. Runs true.

      • US or UK sizes?

    • +1

Get one whole size up. I normally wear US12 and the last deal was too small, so, I just ordered size 13.

      • US13 out of stock, that sucks, I'm normally a US12 and have been looking for a good deal on a nice hiking boot..

    • I'm deciding between true to size US 9.5 or US 10.0

I wear tennis shoes upsized to US10 as it allows feet to expand and fits well for me.

I reckon go half size up.

      • Someone told me the other day that half-size is generally about the width.

So that makes sense really, if you want room for your foot to expand!

  • +3

Would have jumped at this if it wasn't gore-tex (I'd prefer breathability vs waterproof).

    • +11

Just poke some holes in them

    • +1

I am pretty sure that Gore Tex is waterproof and breathable

      • It's barely breathable to start with. And once the membrane fills up with sweat and oils from being worn around your feet, even less so.

Many years ago, I had an interesting afternoon of conversation with one of the guys who works in one of the main university labs that does testing for waterproof/breathable membranes in Europe. He wasn't keen on it either.

Gortex is a fantastic case study in the power of marketing. And also of how market dominance can be used to suppress better performing new entrants (eVent 15 years ago was vastly superior).

Given the choice between goretex and just good quality full grain leather, I would choose the latter. It's just very, very hard to find these days because everyone bought into the goretex fairy tale decades ago. Last year I came across a pair of full leather non goretex boots on sale, and snapped them up instantly even though I didn't need new hiking boots.

    better than most electronic stuff.

  • Its US sizing per their website. I bought a pair of Salomon's on prime day and I jumped on this one. Do I need it? no. But its a great deal.

  • "Has already got a couple from previous deals."

why do you need so many pairs?

    • Comfort & very support for even everyday wear as well.

      • ok i was worried that they don't last long/poor quality

      • Do you own both mid and low cut versions for everyday wear?

        • No. I have 2 low cut versions

  • +6

    George Constanza approves this

  • +2

Are these slippery on wet city surfaces like the Solomon XA PRO 3D GTX?

    • +3

I'd say yes, given these have the same soles as my Salomon shoes - really quite dangerous on hard slick wet surfaces - like ice skating - metal drain covers are the worst

      • +2

You'd think they'd be more apt to handle them considering they're waterproof hiking shoes. What happens if you come across a riverbed with the rocks eroded smooth?

        • Are all hiking shoes like this or just these ones…..

        • +3

Seems we can't have it all unfortunately, to have traction in mud they need deep tread, to have traction on large rocks they need soft compounds. To combine deep tread and softer compounds would mean they would wear out extremely fast

  • +4

Add an extra 10% off with BIRTHDAY10 promo code 😁 thanks OP

    • code didnt work

      • +1

Strange, it worked for me and it's not my birthday

      • Sorry it does work, but for some reason I couldn't do it for an order with more than one item at a time.

  • This looks like another one of those Anaconda exclusive Salomon models. Does anyone know if there is a difference in quality between Anaconda exclusive lines and the mainstream lines?

    • I'm wondering that too. I need replacement hiking boots but can't quite pull the trigger on these. They look really cheap.

      • +1

Well it says 4 year warranty. That’s good enough for me.

      • +1

I'm probably not going to pull the trigger on them anyway, I bought a pair of Columbia Crestwood Mid boots for $80 a couple of months back. I just have some concerns over exclusives because it's hard to source reviews when they're only sold in one place.

        • +1

No reviews, but it's still goretex, there's warranty and they're $99 instead of $200+, just saying.

          • @pizzaguy: Stuff it, pulled the trigger. Worse case it lasts 2 months worth of hiking, at $89 (with extra discount) it ain't too shabby.

            • @mustaful: Please keep us updated :)

              • +1

@benchman: I think they'd work just fine if the trail is well established. If you do hiking with rugged landscape and you're not as attentative (like me) and scrape your shoes against rocks constantly, you might wear the sides out quite fast. Also the laces are quite thin (like fettuccine) whereas my X ULTRA MID 2 GTX had some much thicker round laces.Shoes feel stiff so far but might just need some wearing into which I will do before I hike.

      • I got a pair of X ULTRA MID 2 GTX but that's got a couple small holes in them and the laces are broken after a few big hikes. Not sure if the sizing is the same, they're both MID and I can't find any reviews on this pair nor can I make a price comparison to other shops as Anaconda seem to be the only guys stocking them. I feel like the sides are more prone to tear if your feet tend to get snagged between rocks.

      • "brommo"
Gore Tex is never xheap lol.

  • What are they most similar to that is on the actual website?

They’re not in salomon website… anaconda exclusive, if they are similar to their other hiking shoes then could be good deal but at this price point they’re probably not?

  • +1

You like saying goretex don't you.

  • +1

Low version is also on sale FYI

  • Went and tried them on at my local store and wasn't a big fan - not really digging the 'mid' style personally. Prefer a higher boot, but that's just me. FYI, they are narrow (like many of this brand seem to be) and I usually buy a 9US in Adidas runners but needed a 9.5-10 in these….

    • Thanks for your feedback, I ordered one mid half a size up at 10. Do you prefer the mid or low cut style and is it suitable for everyday wear?

  • +5

Just picked up a pair from the store and online sizing is in UK size. I ended up going 0.5-1 size up from my normal UK shoe size. Shoe size on the box says UK10 and US10.5 which is weird. Also the store assistant said you want it to fit a little roomy and have a thumb around the front incase of swelling and for your toes be comfortable.

    • Online sizing is annoying because it isn't clear whether US or UK. Looks like I'll have to exchange for right size in store and for the missus as well.

    • +1

I just picked up my pair from the store, and they came in US sizing. My order fit perfectly. Online sizing is definitely US and not UK.

    • Also the store assistant said you want it to fit a little roomy and have a thumb around the front incase of swelling and for your toes be comfortable.

You want space in front of your toes so that when you're walking downhill, your toes don't slam into the front of the boot.

That's a perfect way to have your toenails go black and fall off after extended hiking. I've seen this happen to people.

The swelling thing can be ignored, you get boots fitted in the afternoon or the end of the day after you've been standing up a lot.

  • Can the sole be removed from these for custom orthotics?

    • Just got mine and the sole can be removed. Not sure how large your orthotics are though.

    • I've never encountered hiking boots where the cheap foam inserts were permanently attached.

  • +1

Sadly no width fittings so those of us with wide feet have to stick with importing from the US rather than supporting Australian retailers ..

  • I have very similar shoes, be very careful with wearing these on flat hard ground as they have very little surface area for grip.

  • +1

Got mine, size is definitely US (I ordered Size 10, the box says US 10 or UK9.5). My usual size is US9.5 so I got half a size bigger than normal, which fits well. So sounds like best to go half a size bigger as per others' comments.

  • Is goretex bad for the environment? Or bad for your health

    • I wouldn't recommend eating it, but you'll probably wear socks so shouldn't come directly in contact with your skin.
