Moving to USA - Sending Few Boxes of Personal Effects

So family member is moving to USA and need to send some packed and sealed boxes of stuff.
Searched forum plenty of US -> AU but not much info on AU -> USA

I've run a few quotes online and it gets pretty $$ real quick.. Dont expect it to be free, but close to a grand means will have to cut back on what to send..

Anyone with any experience or suggestions

You can ask the airline what they charge for unaccompanied baggage. IIUC these will show up eventually when the airline has spare capacity in their flights. Not too expensive from my experience but this was a decade back (not USA but Asia)

    • Thanks for reply..

Actually a good suggestion though. If they fly Delta, they include 2 bags and each additional one is only +$100 USD.

Up to 10 bags total per passenger I believe. You're not going to find much cheaper than that.

  • Assume you already have the dimensions of the cartons, their dead weight and the customs commodities you'll be shipping. You will likely have entered this into one of the express freight forwarders (e.g. FedEx, DHL) to get a cost for economy air. I'm seeing A$538 for a standard removalist carton weighing 50kg via FedEx International Economy to west coast USA. If you have more volume to ship, get a quote for sea freight (LCL) from an international freight forwarder but consider they'll charge at least $700 just to handle the shipment, with freight charges additional.

    • Thanks for reply..
Had thought sea freight as its no rush, but scary expensive..

    • The actual LCL ocean freight component for a pallet is quite cheap. It costs us around AUD 280 for ocean freight from the USA East coast for a pallet weighing around 800kg.
Final cost will depend on what you can negotiate with a freight forwarder here. May also be cheaper to get a quote just for the Australian end and find your own USA agent.

      • Is that where you get your gear?

        • We source most of our products from USA and some from Taiwan

      • yea plenty of info and prices on USA to AU… just not the other way…

        • My post was intended to give OP some sort of idea what the ocean freight component cost is at the moment. Reasonable to assume whether USA to AUS, or AUS to USA cost would be about the same.

          • @Ocker: I would have thought they would be similar costs too :(

Put all your stuff on Amazon for sale at ridiculously inflated prices. Send it to the local warehouse. Then buy it back when you get there. Don’t forget to subscribe to Prime

Yeah its going to be expensive..
If its literally boxes (under 100kg) - Interparcel is your best bet.
If its over 100kg, you'll need to contact a freight forwarder and ship a pallet over - which will likely cost somewhere in the realm of $1k-$2k depending on where it needs to go to.

  • I have previously moved from the UK to Australia and used Seven Seas Worldwide. It was very easy to organise and at the beginning of 2020 was also very reasonably priced. PM me if you want more details. How soon are you looking to do this?

    • using their calculator thingy

      2 x Large Box 61cm x 41 x 51 / 24inches x 16 x 20(HWD) 30kg max
      1 x Clothes Box 61cm x 51 x 41 / 24inches x 20 x 16(HWD) 30kg max

      $1024 by sea ~89 days
      $2049 by air - 14-16 days…

very ouch…. could by a return ticket with extra luggage for that. lol

      • FedEx last minute rate for the three cartons: $925.47 to east coast USA. That's a fabulous rate but perhaps more than you'd like to spend. I used to work in international freight and $10 per kg for air freight is a solid price.

      They’ll be fine*

*Provided they don’t spend too much time in public places without having an exit plan, match a certain racial demographic, don’t have Children in a school or university, do not get sick or lose their job, they are well insured, and don’t care much about fellow citizens.
