  • 800 off for Pro too?

    • No, just the non pro

  • +4

Got the sapphire version of this a while back, great watch.

    • Same here, massive upgrade from a F3HR

    • Is it better than the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro? I'm a little torn since I own a Galaxy S22 and the compatibility seems ideal.

      • +1

Completely different watch. The galaxy watches Android LTE smart watches, designed so that you don't need to carry your phone with your.

These are custom smart sport watches, more for battery life and sport functionality.

      • +1

i moved from the galaxy watch 5 to the Garmin venu 2 plus. i don't think i will ever go back to daily recharge requiring smartwatches ever again. unless they have advanced health tracking like blood sugar monitoring

  • +4

I paid full price when this came out and don't regret it. Great watch, great features, great battery life, beautiful screen.

Only downside is the Garmin app is a bit average, but it's definitely more oriented towards professional sports and statistics than consumers.

    • +1

      Neggin nannies

Great value and more features than almost everyone would use would use.

      • +2

Didn't neg you but have you actually used an Epix? The Forerunner 945 you're suggesting does not have a touchscreen and is a transflective display. I had a Fenix 6 that's more like the Forerunner 945 and found the transflective display too dim, and found the lack of a touchscreen a pain especially when using maps.

The extra $250 for the epix is well worth it IMHO. The Forerunner would be fine for some people, but the epix is a really different experience.

        • +2

Thought I'd suggest it, at $500 it's a great deal (50% off) but all depends what you want. Some people would rather pay closer to $500 than $1000.

I personally don't care about a touch screen - same as the Garmin edge, buttons are actually easier on the bike when you're moving.

The target buyers are a bit different to people that want a smart watch like samsung etc - tech toy and use as a phone, charge every day or mostly buying it for fitness tracking. Comes down to budget I guess not just specs.

          • +2

@G-rig: Bought the 945 today at rebel. Had a Vivoactive 3 with touchscreen and was a bit confused at first - few hours later I actually like it. Vivoactive to forerunner 945 was already a stretch even at 499 but am glad I bought it. As you said, for some, the 945 is a pretty good deal and has all the features I need.

            • +2

@Powlie85: Good stuff mate, I got my brother one not long ago, price matched at the time - very easy on the chat but easier now they are $499. Can't go wrong for the price, was a pretty good model and the battery life is great (compared to most smart watches especially).

Anyway I'd get one but wear traditional watches and a Fitbit charge 5 (and have a Garmin edge for the bike). Otherwise, a Fitbit isn't hefty enough as an online watch imo.

              • @G-rig: That’s a nice watch, I couldn’t see in the specs if it does swimming metrics.

just get Fenix 6 Pro for under $500

  • +4

I have the 6X Saphire Edition. Got in on Black Friday in 2020 for $700. Love the battery life and the look, especially with the aftermarket steel strap, as I'm fond of large masculine watches. It also feels indestructible.

It does have a ton of cool stats, most are inaccurate or unnecessary for most fitness enthusiasts, things like sleep tracking are completely useless and they haven't fixed this even despite people raising this for years. The screen is also quite dim on the Saphire version and maps are hard to navigate without the touch screen.

I mostly just use it for indoor workouts with a chest strap for "Strength" workout tracking in "free" mode, as rep counting is also inaccurate and editing it is a pain without a touch screen. Just get a Polar H10 strap, rather than a Garmin one - I'm actually very happy with the combo.

The rest of the time I use my Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic for the smartwatch functionality. Having said that, I would love to upgrade to the Garmin Epix Pro for $800 off, for the touch screen and OLED.

    • +12

i read all this and have no idea why you still use the watch :)

      • As I said, looks, ruggedness, battery, works well with the strap - the Samsung Watch doesn't. Workout rating stats are reasonably useful when used with the strap.

I also occasionally wear it out. If it had an OLED touch screen, I'd use it more often.

        • +2

i agree - its a great watch but I wouldn't say all the things you listed are not accurate.
Also you would be much better off getting HRM pro then H10 - it can store heart rate data and sync when in rage later on - I use it for soccer and its great

          • @botchie: I'm glad you like you HRM Pro, but there are not as reliable as the H10 and need to be replaced a lot more frequently. I'm also never without my watch, so wouldn't be better off with the HRM Pro.

            • @elektron: Yeah I guess it's a preference thing, I needed something that I can wear while not wearing the watch .
As far as accuracy I think it's pretty solid , I do lots of sprints and it responds well to hr spikes .

              • +1

@botchie: Agreed. By reliability didn't mean accuracy though, but dependability, as I remember reading about it when deciding which one to get. Sounds like you're happy with your decision and it works for your use case

                • @elektron: I have 2x HRM PRO and one Polar H9.

No difference in heart rate tracking. However, H9 cannot be immersed in the water but can wash the strap. Use it for cycling and battery is easy to replace. I think it will last long as replacement straps are available.

Use HRM pro for other activities mainly running and the battery lasts longer but is a pain to replace and cause it to die. Provides running dynamics but stopped looking at it.

I have 6X sapphire and love it along with Connect. Don’t find the display dim. Planning to buy Epix 2 pro when ECG is enabled or the price is more reasonable.

    • +2

What makes the sleep tracking completely useless?

      • its questionable at best I agree but usually its fairly accurate - don't expect it to be 100% all the time
if it shows poor reading you had poor sleep - if its highs score you had good sleep but duration and stages could be wrong I find

      • +1

This is more of an issue with Fenix 6 than any of the later models. I have the 7X and it is absolutely spot on.

        • According to the extensive testing by the Quantified Scientist channel, Fenix 7 is actually inferior to the much cheaper Vivomove Sport. I'm glad it works for you.

        • Negging factsyou don't like?

      • +3

Garmin just isn't good at sleep tracking. Fitbit is much better.

        • +1

Any other mainstream brand is much better. The most recent WatchOS update has propelled Apple to the top of sleep tracking, but the Fitbits are still great.

Read all the complaints on the Garmin forums. The Quantified Scientist YouTube channel has also done a lot of great comparisons with detailed graphs, which has confirmed my own experience over the years (at one point I wore 3 watches to bed as an experiment).

          • +1

@elektron: Yeah, I'm a longtime Garmin user, and the sleep tracking just sucks.

  • got the 955 but very tempted

  • +6

    This is a steal and would be an instant buy for me if I didn't already have this watch. At this price;

    (a) it is better value than the Garmin 965, and
    (b) much cheaper than the Epix Pro. You are only losing out on an in-built torch and a slightly upgraded sensor. You will also get all of the new software features from the Epix Pro in a future firmware upgrade.

    • Display size?

    • Just ordered 965 for $850 from Wild Earth. Was thinking of returning it for this deal now but reviews are saying the screen in 965 is a lot nicer and better OS, probably because it’s a year newer than the Epix. 965 has dual band satellite, better battery life, now I’m leaning toward just keeping it despite what the rrp saving might have me think.

      • I've read some people saying the opposite. All up, I think the Epix has better hardware, but the 965 has better software.

        • 965 has colourful graphics while Fenix/epix are more professional as per Garmin

      • 965 is $950 not $850?

        • +3

TAKE10 code brings it down to $850, or on their ebay listing there is a 10% eBay code.

  • These are great , paid about $900 for a titanium sapphire version.

  • Anyone else getting a delivery date of late August, early September?

    • Yes

    • Received a shipping notification for mine this morning! :)

      • Same. From Bondi.

    • Yes i did but received it within 2 days.

  • Being a sporty watch, would wait for Sapphire version to go on sale. Is the updated heart rate sensor worth the extra to go for Pro (don't care about LED flash)?

Currently using Fenix 6 Sapphire from 2021, battery doesn't last as long, probably hinting time to update.

    • Have a 6 Sapphire too. Great watch. Ant connectivity and battery life are the best bits for me

  • +2

So tempted but got Fenix 6 Pro for the last two years and it has been great at being a Sports Watch. I probably use 20% of F6 features and this will be the case with Epix too. I have always wanted that gorgeous touchscreen but cannot justify spending almost the same again on this one. Someone talk me out of it….

    • +1

That would apply to most people :D Looks cool though.

    • +2

Well… if it helps, I had a Fenix 6 which was great at being a sports watch but wasn't great at being an everyday smartwatch because of the dim screen and no touchscreen. I ended up going back and forth between my Galaxy Watch 4 and the Fenix 6.

I eventually bit the bullet and bought the Epix and never looked back. The week-long battery life is fantastic, notifications work fine, maps are much easier to use, tracking works great too.

Someone talk me out of it….

      Oh whoops…

      • Haha. Not helping.
I do the same back and forth with my Apple Watch. I do miss analytics such as body battery, stress etc. + battery life. However, GPS is way better on AW so I mainly use it for running.

        • However, GPS is way better on AW so I mainly use it for running.

Well… if it helps, the Epix Gen 2 has multiband GPS which the Fenix 6 doesn't. It gives improved positioning in urban environments. :)

          • @eug: The steel version doesn’t have the Multiband GPS. Only Sapphire versions do. This would have been an instant buy otherwise.

            • @RandomDealHunter: Sorry, I only realised after you mentioned it in another post. I always assumed the only difference was the sapphire, titanium, and storage.

      • +2

Bloody hell mate. This is why I hate OB.

I've also been rocking the Fenix 6 Pro for 2 years and have been happy with it. I didn't even know about the Epix line until just now. And now looks like I'm upgrading… :(

    • +1

Same here, I've got the Fenix 6S pro and it's been awesome. I'm tempted, but this watch is still working

    • One of the reasons I was tempted to purchase was for better GPS (besides the screen). However, Epix 2 Steel does not come with the more accurate GPS - ‘Multi Frequency Function’ which is only available on the Titanium/Sapphire Model. Will wait for the other one to go on sale which might be near Christmas.

They did the same for Fenix 7 where Fenix 7x sapphire gets the better GPS than all other Fenix 7 models.

  • If only I could take a call on this watch and if it had speakers… I know it doesn't matter to most. To Justify the amount over Fenix 6

  • -1

How does this compare to the Apple Watch? Worth waiting for Series 9 or is this a better option?

    • +2

A million youtube videos comparing the two.

      • +1

But he wants to know your opinion

  • Damn was about to buy then realised the coupon doesn't cover the sapphire model. Really want that one due to doing a lot of activities with a very high chance of scratching the screen.

    Keep on waiting

    • +1

Also, only Sapphire comes with better GPS - ‘MULTI-FREQUENCY POSITIONING’.

  • +1

Damn you Ozbargain. Been running the 245 music for a few years now and have been happy with it, but can't pass up that price.

  • Got one thanks

  • Shut up and take my money!

  • Good deal and a good excuse to replace my aging 2018 fenix 5. Thanks OP!

  • How would this look on a small female wrist? Id love to get it for the features but I have child size wrists

  • +2

I also got a $50 JB Hi Fi voucher for spending more than $300. Makes it an even better deal!

    • Really?? Does everyone get that $50?

Edit: aww, just had a look. That ended yesterday

      • +1

Yes, I got one too, it's valid for a month and I've know idea what to spend it on.
