Mini-Jump Starter That Works for Very Flat Batteries

So I have a couple of those mini-jump starters. Eg. FNNMEGE 2000A Peak 21800mAh 12V Super Safe Car Jump Starter with USB Quick Charge 3.0 (Up to 8.0L Gas or 6.5L Diesel Engine) .

I've used the one linked and its little brother a number of times and all has been good. To date modern cars where the battery was getting old and just wouldn't start. Up to and including a 3.6L V6.

Today I tried these on my old ute - circa 1998 Rodeo V6 3.2L. Lights left on and battery very flat. The jump starters did nothing. The first one (1500A on the docs) did absolutely nothing, the second one (2000A - linked) did some sort of error music.

So I'm guessing that the lights have drained the battery too much. I've chucked some jumper leads in my ute (they worked fine) but is there any of these likely to work?

  • No love even with turbo mode?

Edit ah I see this doesn’t have turbo like the gooloo

    • Correct - no turbo mode. Do you think this would help? There was a turbo switch on the unit I gave my mum but essentially she needed to use the turbo every time.

      • not sure, my old navarra needed the turbo mode, my old crv didnt.

  • Need two things. Battery capable of a big dump of power PLUS decent sized leads. The leads should be the same size as jumper cables - and the cable but not the insulation.

Cheap cables often have fat insulators and tiny wires in them. In the past I struggled to get a car going with some cheap leads. They got hot and it wouldn’t start. Good jumpers leads started it off the same donor in quick time.

Also the stats in Amazon etc are always optimistic and especially up to 8l gas engine. That doesn’t mean a lot.

    • Excellent video. Particularly the bit where he replaces the battery with a block of wood. Really shows what they can do with a totally dead battery.

Gooloo GP2000 with boost started my V6 with a very flat battery. On the first go the car stalled as soon as I disconnected the jump starter. On the second go I wedged the throttle to remain at 2500rpm before removing the jump starter and that did the trick. I started that car 5 or 6 times like that before getting a new battery.

Edit- thanks, your post reminded me that I should charge the gooloo

    • Gooloo no longer sold by Amazon :(

  • What's the voltage of your battery before you even try to jump start.

Dead batteries are a thing and attempting to jump starting them with a mini jump stater will fail.

    • No idea. Was my GF's son. Left the lights on. He didn't have a multimeter with him (or jumper leads unfortunately) lol.

Theres a tiny button on the side of my gooloo. When I had a dead flat car battery I had to press it. I think it disables the polarity protection and energizes the relay. The GP2000 easily started my diesel V6.

    • May have to look at a different unit me thinks.

  • If the battery is dead for real there is no point jump starting - except for may be go to the battery shop ?

I'd just buy a new battery and throw away the old one. If it is actually dead, you can't charge it back.

I have seen somewhere that you shouldn't try to jump a dead battery (ie. a one with a very low voltage) - risk of exploding due to gasses - but I can't find a reference now.

    • I agree that when it's gone it's going to keep failing. But it failed here due to lights on. Jump started (after the mini-jumper didn't work) and hasn't failed to start since. Potentially the battery is on its way out but as this is just my spare old ute I'm not jumping to spend money on a battery if it keeps working.

  • I carry one of the Gooloo things in my car and have used it to jumpstart mates' cars when the batterie's flat (like after leaving lights on etc). Each time, it's worked perfectly first go.

    • Just checking - what am I looking at here (well apart from a posting with a jump starter in it)?

  • So some more info. Watched the videos posted on youtube and then re-checked the little 1500A Gooloo. It has the boost button. Battery on the ute charged so disconnected it and was able to start the ute - sans battery - with just the gooloo with the boost button engaged.

That is the main reason why I bought Gooloo, love their boost button.
