Do You Prefer a Smaller Gaming Setup?

Hey folks. Just doing a straw poll for you gamers - do you like to game on your consoles? Do you prefer a smaller setup (ie 27”-42” monitor/TV) or game in a living room/theatre setup? I’m considering getting the 42” LG C2 to go with my PS5 as it’s only me in the home that games. Just wondering what the pros and cons of each setup are and thought I’d ask the brains trust. Have a great weekend!

  • well, while I game I don't have a console but a mid range PC capable of most games at up to 4k. My problem is having moved to a 1 room shithole I had to give up some equipment. I now have a choice between a 40" FHD TV and my day to day 27" 1440 monitor, no more 4k screens.

I can switch quite easily between the 2, having the bigger screen allows for better immersion in all the combat games (mainly Sniper Elite series) while slower paced games such as hacker, hacknet etc (more text based) seem better on the smaller screen. The big screen is used for all my streamed/dl'd movies as its better suited to that

If I had the room, cash etc I'd buy a decent 40-43" 4K TV and ditch the rest

    • Thanks mate - that’s great advice which I think I will follow!

i use the C2 as my desktop monitor/gaming, cant praise it enough.

    • Same, the C2 42" is amazing for PC gaming. Got it when it was on sale for just over $1K, incredible price compared to all the overpriced OLED gaming monitors currently available.

To the OP: 42" is perfect if you're going to be gaming (whether PC or console) at a desk — assuming you have a reasonably deep desk, I'd say at least 80 cm . For couch console gaming, I'd go for at least a 55" or 65" TV.

      • Thanks folks. I was gonna install this in my study around the corner from my work monitor (ultrawide which probably isn’t suitable for PS5 gaming) and using my office chair to swing around and play it. Appreciate it!

    • I was thinking of doing this too but work primarily in Word and was concerned about text being fuzzy. Have you found this to be the case? Did you also claim this for tax purposes (if you used it for work)?

      • I've got a 48 inch monitor. It's probably a bit too big as I need a deeper desk and ergotron hx mount.

Text on that is sharp. It's good for excel too. Claimed tax on it too.

        • Oh cool! Which monitor did you end up getting? I am discovering a whole new world of smaller 42-48” gaming-specific OLED monitors and TVs. Not cheap though!

          • @Ashok Wilmington: Gigabyte Aorus fo48u. I'm enjoying it now it's been set up. I ended up getting a pine project board from bunnings and gave it a few coats of clear coat.

I've got it at around 50% brightness so no burn in that I've noticed.

      • nah no fuzzy text man, that was an issue for some ultrawide oleds but not for the C2. its easy viewing for web pages and ms office stuff
i paid 2k for mine at release and was blown out of the water some lucky buggers got it for around 1 to 1.2k a few months later when the sales came at that price its a steal.

also iv been bashing it daily and no burn-in yet. i use to be super cautious turning it off the second i left the room, even with being lazy and leaving it on it hasn't had an issue

  • Depends how close you sit I guess.

  • It really depends on the type of games you will be playing.

If you're more focused on the cinematic immersive games like The Last of Us, God of War, Horizon, Witcher 3, RDR etc then the largest 4K OLED display you can with an appropriate speaker system. This is my preference.

If you prefer fast paced first person shooter games then a smaller monitor on a desk with a keyboard & mouse and headset would be better suited.

    • Thanks! Actually thinking more single player first party Playstation games as I don’t game competitively (not good enough!). No one else in my home plays games and I don’t really have friends over to game so thought I would keep the footprint small. Was just going to use headphones as the primary method for audio out.

      • You can't go wrong with an LG OLED. The 42" will be lovely for a desk setup. The question is whether you can still find them at appropriate prices. Seems sold out everywhere.

  • Thanks for all your input everyone. The inspiration behind the 42” C2 idea was this video which I thought was a really neat and minimalistic way to get immersed in games and playing up close.

  • I literally only game on my phone so yes?

  • Not a console gamer, but I got a pair of TCL Nxtwear S XR glasses recently and I have to say playing games on a screen projected onto glasses in bed beats a giant TV.

    Where is the poll?

    • Made of straw, the big bad wolf blew it down
      .

  • Not a 'gamer' as such. XBS on a 10 year old LG 55" tv sitting on the couch around 5 metres away so not immersive. My son sits less than 2 metres away from the same, way too close for my liking.
    .

  • I like sitting up real close. I can rarely get comfortable in front of a big TV.

But 42" at arms length might be too close.

  • Mainly an MMO/4x gamer so I have a 34" Ultrawide and call it a day. Very enjoyable. I don't think I'd consider using a TV as a monitor though like some of the 42" suggestions in here. Not so ergonomic.

  • I live in a small apartment with my wife and no kids so as much as I love to have a good pc gaming setup, I'm happy with my laptop.
