I have a pair of these and absolitely love them! Highty recommended.

    • awesome, thanks. Just bought them :)

    • is there a lot of bass to them?

What kind of music/ what do you use it mainly for?

      • +1

They have a flat response curve. They're studio monitors. So if you want boomy bass look elsewhere as theyre designed to reproduce the music as it was intended to be heard.

I use them for HiDef digital files from Jeff Buckley to Metal to Classical.

        • +1

Decidedly consumer gear, these ones - big fat V-shaped response curve on them: https://www.rtings.com/headphones/1-5/graph#295/7917

Subjectively, even as someone with a preference for hifi-ish studio gear, I couldn't cope with the flabby bass on these and moved on.

Anyone specifically looking for bass should be pretty happy.

      • I have the m40x. When I did the research before purchase a few years ago, the m40x was said to be more neutral and had much less bass than the m50x.

IIRC m50x was said to have boomy but inaccurate bass, i.e. the sound signature is V-shaped. Different people like different sound signatures. I think it works well on metal and electronic. I think JB has m50x for audition, go try it out to see if you like it.

Both m40x and m50x were used to be the most recommended entry level audiophile headphones. There are better alternatives nowadays but I don't think you can go wrong with either. Once you go down the rabbit hole, you will lose count of how many you have.

  • this or the Rode NTH-100?

      AKG K371.

I don't recommend these, the headband and earcup pleather will crack and flake awfully quick, the earcups are small and cramped, if you've tried any of the sony xm3 4 5 or any bose NC earphones, those are infinitely more comfortable than these m50s.

Mine are going on 10 years and are in perfect condition.

    • I used these cans daily to game on.. can confirm they do have this effect within 1-2 years.

However, highly recommend spending ~$20 on replacement pads once this happens - I personally prefer to velour pads, at first I thought I was stupid thinking it’s surely going to get too hot, but was pleasantly surprised with how airy it is

  • Had the ATH-M30 - Sound is great but they are so uncomfortable.

  • +2

My first pair of proper headphones! I've had it for 7 years now, still works. I've moved on from it however, the headband and cup ages poorly and started to flake.

There might be better options in this price range tho.

    • Got the same problem then recommended something similar to this headphone band cover by another fellow ozbargainer and never looked back!

Got these as my fullsized headphones, they're great if you're stepping up from something low-end, but you quickly realise you can pay a little bit more and get something a lot better. Cups are a little on the small/shallow side, although some of that can be fixed with new pads.

Can't say I ever had any exterior wear and tear issues, and mine were being used daily plus on long-haul flights. Ended up replacing them after one side developed a bit of a rattle.

    • +1

what headphone would you recommend that would be a step-up from the ATH-M50X?

  • +2

I've owned both the Sony and Bose equivalents and the sound quality from the AT's is on another level, much better. Powers easily from a phone, never had an issue with fit or quality. Will note those that these are not the Bluetooth enabled model, worth keeping in mind if that interests you.

Highly recommend, have both the Sony xm4 and the blutooth version of the ATs and I found the audio quality on the AT is way better. But horses for courses…. one has ANC whlie the other doesn't. That said, the stock earpads are a bit meh, but they are easy to change over. I use the Brainwavez pads: https://www.brainwavzaudio.com/collections/prostock-designed….

Each to their own, but my XM3's sound much better than my old (wired) M50x

    • +2

This just might be my ears.

But I replaced my ATH-M50x cups with the brainwavz pro audio memory foam PU one, and the sound signature changed significantly. To a degree that I stopped enjoying the headphones. But that's just my experience with them.

I found that the Shure SRH840 pads, while didn't fit the ATH-M50x perfectly (good enough fit imo), was more comfortable, and sounded a lot better than a branwavz. The Shure pads from memory was similar to the original pads, but with more airiness to the sound. I would definitely recommend those.

      • Yeah I tried the hybrid pads and wasn't a fan of the sound

  • +2

I have a pair of their predecessor, ATH-M50, and concur with both the great sound quality and flaking issue others have noted. I really like the sound of them, despite being heavily worn, and have ordered some replacement ear cups and head band from Wicked Cushions. Good headphones stay good and with new padding I hope they can regain a bit of comfort too.

  • +1

These are excellent for v drum kits. My Sony xm4 sound awful in comparison to these if you're into electric drums.

  • So easy to drive without need for external amplification. Sound amazing. The white colour if u can get, look so cool.

  • I left my pair on the plane in Thailand, be careful when taking sleeping tabs 😭

  • +1

Placed an order yesterday, it was cancelled and refunded today without any explanation. Poor experience!

    • Same here - mine just got cancelled too!

      • +1

Possibly stale inventory. But would've been great if they could have given an explanation. Now I have to wait 3 days to get the money back in my account.

Nothing against you mate. Would've been a great deal if fulfilled.

        • You guys don't have to worry too much though. $180 is not a great price. They frequently touch $149 in various stores.
