      Some uses cases are:

      • Use it on a plane to watch your own downloaded Netflix or YouTube shows without having to figure out how to hang a tablet in front of you

      • Connect it to your SteamDeck or other portable gaming console for a larger screen and better posture

      • Watch videos while lying down in bed without disturbing your partner(s)

How do these compare to NReal AIR?

    • -1

      better off going with nreal

      • Also check out the newer Rokid and Viture ones. They all have their advantages and disadvantages.

      • Have you tried both?

      • Ok, so you haven't tried both… Have you tried either of them??

    • Haven't tried this but love my NReal Air and use it all the time when travelling. I almost bought these when they were launching via either kickstarter or indigogo but I went with NReal Air after researching TCL are just getting in the game of making AR glasses and the magnetic proprietary cable is a risk of costing you down the track or worse making it unusable if it does get damaged compared to NReal just using a usb type C. This device is best for gaming with it and watching movies on a plane or in bed if you don't want to wake your partner or others if you share hotels or airbnbs.

      • Hey mate where did you get your nreals from? Looking at getting a pair. :)

  • +5

just note that they call this 'air' but it's not wireless haha. there is a cable, they have just done their best to hide it in these photos..

also the TCL support is hilariously bad. I spent about a month going back and forth with their support team trying to find out if the AU version of their TCL 20 Pro 5G was compatible with the NXT vision products (there is only one model that is, but no one lists it, or at least no one did a year ago). The responses ranged from linking to a google glass article and telling me that they are "universal bluetooth devices" to (after informing them that the NXT vision product was wired via Display over USB-C) "you will need to speak with the TCL NXT Vision support team", which is exactly who I was talking to..

    • What about if you just want to watch high definition 3dVR Linux ISOs?

      • haha i don't know man im sorry, i didn't ever buy these as I could never get TCL to confirm if it worked with the phone i was going to pair it with or not. the idea seems/seemed interesting though when I was looking at monitor solutions for a work-while-travelling setup.

just note that they call this 'air' but it's not wireless haha.

Why would 'air' mean wireless? It's usually used to refer to something as light.

      • +1

So it's coincidence that Apple calls their wireless earbuds AirPods and their (lighter) wired earbuds EarPods? Or that we say "over the air" to mean wireless. And we say airwaves to refer to radio waves.

It's not unreasonable to be amused that a device with "air" as its descriptor requires a wire to function at all times. I can't think of many other examples of recent tech where that's true.

Even when "air" is used to refer to something light, it's usually wireless as well, like a laptop or a tablet or earbuds. Because those brands realise that it'd be kinda funny to describe a light tethered device with "air".

They're obviously just cashing in on x/nreal's (lighter!) "air" product and they don't give a shit whether it makes sense or not.

        • +1

So it's coincidence that Apple calls their wireless earbuds AirPods and their (lighter) wired earbuds EarPods?

Yes. There's the saying "as light as air" that was around way before Apple was a thing. Not everyone has to follow Apple's naming scheme.

I can't think of many other examples of recent tech where that's true.

Can you think of many non-Apple devices with 'air' in the name? Are you basing your wireless assumption purely on Apple's naming scheme? It'd make sense if you lived in an apple-centric world I guess. Not everyone does though, and these won't even work with iPhones (easily) as they don't have a USB-C port.

          • @eug: Yes. It is an old saying. But you're intentionally taking it out of context to make your point.

I can't think of many other examples of recent tech where that's true.

Can you think of many non-Apple devices with 'air' in the name

A quick amazon search in Electronics shows plenty……. and if you weed out the air purifiers, air fryers and air blowers, the actual tech items in there are all wireless. From keyboards to earbuds. Have a fun read: https://www.amazon.com.au/s?k=air&i=electronics

            • @Joker042: My point was that 'air' has always been used to refer to something as 'light'.
Apple is the only company that widely uses 'air' to mean 'wireless'.

A quick amazon search in Electronics shows plenty……. and if you weed out the air purifiers, air fryers and air blowers, the actual tech items in there are all wireless. From keyboards to earbuds.

Looking at your list, the keyboards are for the iPad Air and MacBook Air. Guess why those devices are called 'Air'. :)

The earphones are just copying the Airpods name. As I said, it's an Apple-centric naming scheme. There really aren't many devices with 'Air' in the name. How many pages in your link did you go through? I gave up on page 5 after going through a sea of air purifiers/blowers and iPad/MacBook Air accessories.

              • @eug: Dude, if you can't see the products in that search I'm not going to list them. Either look at it, or don't. Either way, have a great day.

Edit: apparently I am going to list them.

I assume they're all named after apple stuff, hey?

Maybe it's a coincidence that they're all wireless. Maybe. Or maybe people realise that it's really stupid to use a word which inherently implies the freedom to roam on a wired product. Of course, you're going to get the odd knuckle dragger than doesn't realise it (or more likely doesn't care and just wants to cash in on name recognition), so we get the Wired Air Glasses, and an ozbargain post about it.

                • @Joker042:

But just because stupid… statements… piss me off more than they should, here's 11 from Amazon:

Calm down, no need to get so worked up. That said, did you actually wonder why the products you linked have 'air' in the name?

                  • The first two are for air mice. They work by waving them around in the air, that's why they're called that.

                  • The third one is a drone. Apart from the obvious reason, it is named "Air" because of its size and weight - it was as capable as the Mavic Pro but lighter and smaller.

                  • Your fourth link is for a Bluetooth receiver. I agree with you that it's named Air because of its wireless capability.

                  • The fifth link is just an Airpod knockoff as I've mentioned previously.

                  • The word "air" in the sixth link refers to the type of battery used. Zinc air batteries are used by hearing aid-style devices. They're activated by removing a tab and letting air in. It has nothing to do with wirelessness.

                  • The seventh link is for an Air60 wireless keyboard. I agree that it's related to its wireless capability.

                  • The eighth link again is airpods-inspired naming.

                  • The ninth link - the Ayaneo Air Pro - is named that because it is "ultra-thin, lightweight & portable" as it says in the first line of the description. They also make the Ayaneo 2 which is just as wireless as the Air Pro but isn't called "Air" because it's larger.

                  • The tenth link - the Boox Note Air, is named that because it is very slim and light compared to other similar tablets. They also make the Boox Note2 which is just as wireless but does not have the Air moniker because it's a heavier device.

                  • Your first JB link is for the Oppo AirVOOC wireless charger. "Air" is in the name because of its "Butterfly Wing" air cooling technology - not because it's wireless.

                  • Your second JB link is for the ROCCAT Burst Pro Air Lightweight Optical Wireless RGB Gaming Mouse. You can find the reason for the 'Air' branding right after that word.

                  • Your third JB link is for a Bluetooth transmitter. I agree that it's named Airfly because of its wireless transmission.

                  • Your fourth JB link is for the Enabot Ebo-Air. It is named 'Air' because it's the smaller, lighter version of their Ebo-X, not because it's wireless.

                  • Your fifth JB link is for the Ayaneo Air which was mentioned earlier. It's named that because it's their lighter model, not because it's wireless.

                  • Your sixth JB link is for another Ayaneo console, same as above.

                  • Your last JB link is for the Fitbit Aria Air. That replaced the equally-wireless Fitbit Aria 2 in 2019. The difference is that the Aria Air is slimmer and lighter than the Aria 2.

I assume they're all named after apple stuff, hey?

You misunderstood my point. I just re-read my second comment and can see where I could have been clearer though.

My first comment said that 'air' is usually used to imply a lighter weight, and not that a product is wireless.

My second comment mentions Apple's naming scheme (re: Airpods), after which I asked if there were many non-Apple devices with 'air' in the name. It was referring to the previous sentence where 'air' means wireless in the case of Airpods. I should have said "Can you think of many non-Apple devices with 'air' in the name referring to its wireless capability'? I thought it would have been understood given the context of the discussion but there you go.

Your whole list above does show that 'air' is used a lot more for suggesting a lighter and/or smaller design rather than wireless capabilities though.

                  • -1

@eug: And yet all of them are wireless. Since only an idiot would name a wired product "air".

I guess it's just a coincidence that I found 20 products with "air" in the name which are wireless. You're right. So silly of me.

Any other goalposts you'd care to shift?

Don't get me wrong, there's enough idiots out there that you'll get the odd wired product with "air" in the name, and the odd one to praise it on ozbargain.

                    • -1

@Joker042: Not sure why you're so intensely worked up about this. You are the one shifting goalposts - my point was that 'air' usually means the product is lighter and not that it is wireless. The examples that you gave proved my point.

I guess it's just a coincidence that I found 20 products with "air" in the name which are wireless. You're right. So silly of me.

You're completely missing the point - the products have 'air' in the name because they're lighter, not because they're wireless.

There's clearly no point discussing this further as you'll simply get more agitated. You are free to assume 'air' means 'wireless', just like how I'm free to assume 'air' means 'light'. The majority of the examples you gave do follow my assumption though, so I'll just leave it at that.

                    • +1

                      @Joker042: @eug:

It's also possible that these, Nreal/Xreal, Oppo, etc. are all called Air because they give the appearance of your screen floating in the "air".

                      • +1

@HomeAlone: The 30% lighter weight of the NxtWear Air compared to its immediate predecessor (which also had a 'floating' screen but wasn't named 'Air') was one of its biggest selling points.

The new, stylish glasses combine exceptional display technology and rich, premium design with 30% less weight and a more comfortable fit than previous generation glasses, delivering the ultimate in entertainment and productivity.

“In developing the NXTWEAR AIR, we primarily focused on two areas of importance to consumers: portability and comfort,” said Stefan Streit, CMO for TCL Communication. “With this new generation of NXTWEAR glasses, users can enjoy the same exceptional viewing experience as before, but with even more portability, a comfortable fit and an individual style design.”

    • +1

Well according to spec sheet https://www.gsmarena.com/tcl_20_pro_5g-10855.php it has a usb c 2.0 port which cannot don't do video out. You need a phone with at least 3.0, 3.1. lot of brands cheap out on it.

      • haha thanks, if that is the AU model then that question is finally solved, just sadly not something TCL support could provide - you should reach out for a management role!

  • That is a lot of trust asking….

  • Decent price, although it's an older model.

  • is it good for porn?

    • +1

Imagine what you could do with both your hands free.

      • +1

I bet nanna won't loose these glasses

    • since everyone around you will be able to see what you're watching, hell yeah

  • +2

    perfect for driving, thanks

  • This is the previous one, the current is the "TCL NXTWEAR S XR", which has some upgrades. That has had some coupons to bring it closer to $470. I have that pair, and they're quite good.

    • i have the same model. did you find a way to properly watch 3d movies.

      • Holding the brightness button puts it in 3d mode, but then everything else looks jacked up.

I start the movie on VLC, then toggle on the glasses themselves.

        • I've got a pair of TCL Nxtwear S XR. I actually got onboard their KickStarter..Yep, TCL did a Kickstarter for these in case someone wasn't aware.

I'm happy with them. I've successfully seen 3D movies on them and believe I know how to do it. My question is where on earth are you getting all the content from?

I went looking and basically only found Saw 3D which isn't really for me. I like the idea. Just can't find the titles.

It's any SBS format I believe via VLC.
Do you also have the problem where the screen feels a little lower than you want it to be. You adjust the glasses but bottom of screen feels like it needs to come up and manoeuvering the position of the glasses only seems to help so much. I don't spend a lot of time in the app. What do you use the TCL app for? Mostly seems a bit lame. Those games, The included content, notice they removed Netflix from the app as well.

          • +1

@seamonkey: The high seas have a bit of 3d content. As long as VLC displays it properly, the glasses will too.

Haven't used them that much that I've noticed that problem with positioning.

I don't use the TCL app, esp as it requires a second app for other support, and they don't even have it online properly … so I had to find the APK for it, and then it didn't even enable as much as I thought it would. I just use DeX or straight up screen mirroring, which fixes not having a Netflix app,

            • @kwchaz: how is the 3D experience?

also you tried any VR videos?

              • @pinkybrain: 3D unfortunately very small screen, as you're halving what you have available. Haven't tried VR, doubtful will work well as there's limited head tracking with these (like, very small…)

I have a Quest 2, so that's what I use for proper VR stuff. This I bought for the being able to watch stuff on the couch whilst partner is on the TV, lying down in bed, and for the upcoming flights. It's a lot easier to put on than the quest haha…

                • @kwchaz: i know about screen brightness button, like u said its very small 3d screen .
I was disappointed, i thought i made a mistake along the way. i wanted to watch it like normal screen. but i still like it. and i paid 600something back then

    • having a look at the tcl site i dont see to many differences? the air says 140 inch screen while the XR says 130 inch screen? what helped you choose the xR over the air? thanks in advance

      • Supposedly:
        Magnetic Po-go Pin connector
        Volume and brightness control wheel/knob
Surrounded sound system with a better sound quality

It was newer is why I picked it >_>

        • they definitely make it hard to see the cable on this version i could see the cable but couldnt figure out what kind it was. turns out to be the cheaper one is hard wired and the new one is pogo pin. thanks bud 👍

          • @markdownhunter: which model is new or older?

            • @pinkybrain: the air one is the previous gen the new ones the S XR i think

              • @markdownhunter: oic, but why the air is 140inch vs 130 inch (XR), seems like downgrade for the newer model

                any other differences?

                • @pinkybrain: from poster aboves comment:

i dont think itll make a big different the 140 vs 130 inch. but i picked up the air today so time to wait and see how it performs. pretty cheap for a cool bit of tech 👍

  • Worth trying this to enter hand free screen world?

    • mines coming today will give my initial experience

      • Excellent!

        • +3

using it right now to write this up.

1 - the screen is pretty good, it definitely looks like 1080p. no hardware buttons on the glasses to manually adjust brightness. theres automatic brightness control. the screen size is hard to quantify it's theoretical percieved size. it fits within the glasses size.

2 - speakers are what you would expect. they sound like a earpeace of a phone hovering above your ears. each ear gets it's own speaker. controlled by your phones volume rocker.

3 - theres no additional extras in the box its just the glasses in a nice case. no cloth or extra nose bridges. but the nose bridge works for me. ( average size nose )

4 - you can see through the glasses in bright lightbwith the shades on enough to see if there's things in front of you like you can make out vaguely whats infront. probably really good on night time as when I cover the glasses with my hand its non transperent and dark background with good contrast.

would i buy this for 320 , yeah i can see this being a worthy addition to someones tech

          • @markdownhunter: Thanks very much for your comment and do you need to get adapter to type c to iPhone

          • @markdownhunter: Thanks for sharing and bought it

            • +1

@lw1987321: i do believe you would need a adapter for iPhone, im on a samsung and it was staright usb c in

              • @markdownhunter: It might need to purchase an external battery with an adapter to feed power to glasses..

                • @lw1987321: if you have a phone with good battery should be ok. i have a s20 ultra ( 3 year old battery so probably not as good as it used to be )

i went through about 10% battery per 30 min at full brightness and full volume. would probably be better if i had the brightness down a bit and also a newer healthier battery.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE:

there is a good app for the glasses it was hidden in a different site called rayneo.com tiny url below to apk.

    https://tinyurl.com/tcl-nxtwear-air-app

its a .apk file and i can manually change the brightness of the panel and other settings etc. its like a whole UI for the glasses it looks really cool there's 3D stuff to check out and youtube and amazon prime video app if the tiny URL link expires dm me and ill send you the apk 👍

    • Very unfortunate. I am using iPhone and now I am still trying to figure out if iPhone 14 DP enable device otherwise I have to purchase adaptor

  • you can change the nose tips to a u shaped silicone bridge. more comfortable then the pads. you can find some for $7 on amazon for 1 or if your willing to wait aliexp has it for $10 for 10 pack but you have to wait a fortnight

    • I got my pair arrived today and it can only pair with my surface pro and it looks quite good in centre of screen and edge is a bit blurry

      • That's a commonly-reported problem with HMD glasses, it depends on your eyes and the shape of your nose which affects the positioning of the glasses. Some other brands include different nose pads to slightly adjust the position, maybe you can experiment with some. If you move the glasses around on your face is there a position where everything is clear?
