Rome Return from Melb $1117, Sydney $1118

    Why is Sydney $1 more?

Is that just the conversion between Vic dollars and NSW dollars?

    • It's probably the Sydney airport is a $#@^ for the airline tax

I can hear the China Southern rep now … "If I had a $1 for every time Sydney airport stuffed me around, then I'd be rich!"

  • What is the normal price if changing flight at Singapore or Dubai?

They want you to land and inspect your social score

If using the free overnight service do you need a Chinese visa?

    • Good Question! It doesn't say in on the China Southern page about the free hotel stay, however they do provide an email address for questions:

We did it in 2018, so cannot guarantee you it hasn't changed, but we got a Visa on arrival. Visa took about an hour or so. They had waiting area with free drinks etc. Going to Europe we had a shorter stop (about 18 hours) with Hotel and transfer organised by China Southern and on the return we stayed two night in the accommodation we had booked. From memory the Visa is good for up to 72 hours.

EDIT: I just googled it: "The 72-hour visa-free transit has been resumed from January 8th, 2023 on, after being suspended for 3 years because of the covid-19. The 72-hour visa-free transit policy in China allows air passengers from 53 countries to transit and stay for up to 72 hours (3 days) in 18 China cities without a visa."

I wrote a review after my travels in 2019. It covers the transit visa and free hotel process:

      • Wow - amazingly detailed review! Thanks heaps for posting this. I am going to add a link to your review in the OP. Let me know if you would like to remove it (I cannot send a PM to your profile, not sure why).

      • In your review, you mention:
"Line up with passport, yellow arrival/departure card, visa application, and boarding pass"

Did you need to do anything pre-flight for the visa application? Or was that all done once you landed? (it seems to be a very common question, so just wanted to be as clear as possible).

  • do we need transit visa for China ?

I flew with China Southern to Tokyo last month, return from Melbourne.

Who is eligible for their transit accomodation is very complicated.

I was a Z class economy passenger, and was therefore informed I was not eligible.

Slept on a reasonably comfortable seat, next to an escalator that wouldn't stop playing warning in Mandarin.
