Skincare for Dudes

Hi folks. To all the men out there, what's your skincare routine? I am mid-30s and have never until the last 5 years bothered about skincare save for basic supermarket face cleansers. It's showing now…

Curious about how the guys out there look after your skin and what products (good value of course) you'd recommend?

    Neutrogena Hydro Boost (face)
    Cetaphil skin cleanser (shower)
    Cetaphil body moisturiser (post shower)
Sunscreen (SPF 50) on days out
and lots of water and daily fitness routine

When my eczema decides to flair up I use Dermaveen for a moisturiser

  • Cerave Foaming Cleanser
    Cerave Facial Moisturising Cream (PM)

And the same in the morning but add sunscreen last:
    - La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF 50+

    • Cerave Facial Moisturising Cream (PM)

used to buy this from iherb - but not available there anymore.
      It's fairly expensive elsewhere.

  • You can try something simple like rice water. Many Asian communities swear by this…

  • I recommend something better than a regular/popular chemist brand.

I like Innisfree only really use the face wash though but its significantly better than for example Nivea for men.

Luxury! A true OzBargainDude uses grease from the Sunday BBQ to whittle his hand soap - and there's a lot of it because the meat was bargain basement and about to expire. The water he uses is cold, because who pays extra to heat water!? Bad enough to have had to pay to heat the BBQ.

Accepting that I'm ugly has been a huge money saver ;-)

    Day
    - Cleanser
    - Mucin Power Essence
    - Ampoule
    - Moisturiser
    - Sunscreen

    Night
    - Cleanser
    - Moisturiser
    - Retinol

I'm a 35 year old male and people tell me I look like a 35 year old male.

    YMMV.

    Increase water intake

Any general moisturiser is fine as long as it doesn't react with your skin/make things worse - I have various skin/dermatitis issues, so I pay the extra for La Roche Posay Sensitive Creme, and a few other products specific for dermatitis

Diet matters too. Cutting sugars/increase veggies etc will help long term. I say this as someone with a sweetooth lol.

  • Cerave Hydrating Cleanser in the shower, La Roche Posay Effaclar Mat moisturiser afterwards, sunscreen if I'll be outside. That's about it.
I've been doing some variant of this since high school but that's because I had some pretty horrific acne back then, so I'm used to the routine. Everyone should be doing at least cleanser/moisturiser/sunscreen though (and of course, healthy diet and lots of water).

without a doubt the most important thing is daily sunscreen, especially here in aus. the sun ages you, so think about blocking it as anti-aging ;)

    this is what i use.

    morning:
    clean (CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser)
    moisturise (CeraVe Moisturising Cream)
sunscreen (Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50)

    night:
    clean (CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser)
    anti aging (Tretinoin Cream 0.025%)
    moisturise (CeraVe Moisturising Cream)

Same boat mid 30s never really used any skin care.. just a bar of soap to wash . U dont really need sunscreen for daily use its a scam, full of nastys. I recently started using lamb fat as moisturiser as face gets dry in winters (recently moved from tropics) and thats it. tiny bit goes long way can add rosemary oil for sent. cheap and better than any overpriced cosmetic crap. water for facewash and water for clenser and toner ..u get the idea.. less is more…

  • Workout, get an adequate amount of sun - depending on your skin type, stay hydrated, eat a diet rich in protein and healthy fats. In terms of topical - don't put anything on your skin with alcohol in it. Use a natural product like emu oil or rosehip.

    • Breaking a sweat should help

      Also facial steaming..

  • Hmmm…

Get something fragrance minimal or free and nothing too heavy, +sunscreen for daily use. Eye cream is good underneath the eyes (read more into this) - prepare to pay. Scrubs are good for the face when dirty. Peeling face masks or muds/clays on monthly or bi. Trial and error is key. Don't make it complicated! Cause you will go CRAZY!

    Some other tips:

    • Eat well nutritionally
    • Drink less alcohol or not at all
    • Exercise esp weight training but don't over do it unless your prepared for plenty of rest
    • Use sunglasses!
    • Shorter showers (not 10m+) - never go past 2/day
    • Sleep more and routinely - no one ever sleeps enough these days!
    • Use an electric shaver - razors (profanity) up ya face, if you cut regularly your using/doing it wrong and I've found razors really do dry skin out

    Forgot this one

get an adequate amount of sun

    • Hot shower then finish with cold showering

Alcohol is a biggie. Don't drink, vape weed kids!

    • +1

Wanted to add another big 1.

STRESS! reduce it anyway and every way u can.

The sun probably takes top spot for aging, but there are people that spend minimal time in the sun and still look f*ked by 50.

  • Soap bits and pits only, sunscreen always, exfoliate (glove) and moisturise (sorbolene) weekly. Over 50 and skin like a baby.

  • If you want to do only one thing that will have the most benefit to your skin, it's SPF. Just religiously use SPF.

Other than that, probably don't over complicate it. Find a moisturizer that works for your skin.

Just use it religiously and you'll probably notice a difference in your skin after a while.

  • I tie a kerosene soaked rag around my ankles while I go out so the ants won't climb up and eat my candy ass.

    • I should use this rag to wipe my surfaces too.

      • +1

Nope, just use disinfectant wipes for surfaces. We are not savages!

  • Showering and using the same bath towel to wipe my balls, then face☑️☑️

    • Great tip. Will try that out. Thanks.

    • I normally wipe my balls with the curtain. Neighbour across the street doesn't seem to like it, but it's worked great for me so far.

    • Do you also wipe your ass with the same towel or is that a job for the housemate's towel?

      • I don't have an ass but I do the clean arsehole swipe

    • Why shower? Waste of water. What's wrong with all that stuff your body secretes? You're washing away a fortune in skin care products. ;-)

  • Just take your mrs or mr with you
And buy whatever Este lauder or lancome thing and call it a day, takes 5-10 mins max for applying everything

    • La Prairie Caviar cream.
Jennifer Lopez applies it to her whole body apparently.

    • Wash face with QV wash couple of times a week
    • Don't have super hot showers
    • Work inside
    • Drink water
    • Have good genetics.
    • +1

      Have good genetics.

      My one weakness :(

If we were all hot no one would be hot. Thank you for your service.

I actually found these guys when they first launched on ozbargain with a free sample - https://real-u.com.au/

I've been using them ever since - their range is awesome
I use their moisturister and face cleanser every day and night

but keep in mind how young you look comes down to genetics and how much time you're in the sun (wear sun screen)

    • how young you look comes down to genetics

      Another contributing factor

I'm a little late to this, but I'm a 30+ male that owns a Korean skincare retail store in Melbourne. Korean skincare is far superior to western skincare imo and most of the reddit beauty polls agree. A lot of it is genetics but you can maximize with skincare.

First find out what your skin type is, for more men it's oily.

Cleanser: something with BHA in it
Serum: get a niacinamide to start.
    Moisturiser: Use a Water cream.
Sunscreen: Anything that you don't mind, consistency is better than not wearing it.

There are a heap more steps like toners, essences and double cleansing if you want, just let me know and I can explain it.

My personal routine for oily skin is:
    1. Haruharu Deep Cleansing Oil
    2. KAINE Rosemary Gel Cleanser or Cosrx Salicylic Acid cleanser
    3. Some By Mi Miracle Toner/Haruharu black rice Hyaluronic acid toner
4.I'm from Mugwort Essence/Goodal Hottouynia Essence
4.Cosrx Snail dual essence Radiance serum or Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep serum.(If irritated eg after shaving I switch to Round Lab Mugwort serum and Skin1004 Centella Asiatica ampoule
    5. Heimish Marine care eye cream
    6. Purito Deep Sea Water cream for winter, Beauty of Joseon Red Bean Water Gel for Summer. ( If irritated, anua heartleaf soothing cream/skin1004 Centella soothing cream)
    7. Beauty of Joseon sun relief / Skin1004 hyalu-cica sun serum.

    • Can you hook me up with some sweet deals? The missus was chasing Goodal Green Tangerine Vitamin C Dark Spot Serum but it's sold out everywhere.

      • +1

We've got a heap of them coming in very soon. Got sent last week so likely in next week. Unfortunately we don't do deals as our prices are fixed.

  • start using a Retinol Serum, According to my beauty therapist wife that is the ultimate solution to stop aging, Also use Hyaluronic Acid in the morning and after shower as you moisturizer.

  • What brand of retinol do you use?

  • +1

    Cosrx snail 96 mucin

This stuff is magic, hydrates your skin so well
Read and google reviews if you don't believe me. It's a Korean brand and very famous in the Asian beauty community

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Cosrx-Advanced-Snail-Mucin-Essence…

    • On special as well! When do you apply this? Reviews are… amazing.

      • At the start if your skin is very dry and damaged then apply it 3-4 times a day.

Once you've got a good baseline and your face is properly hydrated, then go down to 1-2 times a day

  • Korean skincare products

  • Pretty sure most products are over complicated BS.

Just sun avoidance and (maybe) moisturiser and good genetics count the most. Asian skincare products are NOT the reason why Asian women look younger. It is because of the above three I reckon.

    https://gimletmedia.com/shows/science-vs/94hwad35

  • Go to the gym regularly and don't drink alcohol everyday.

  • Go to chemist warehouse, buy cerave cleanser and moisturiser. Use sunscreen. Done.

  • As a man who is in his mid-30s, I am using ladies' skincare products. They're basically the same stuff but there are more selections than for men. My current routine is mainly in the world of K-beauty/Hanbang. I do skincare because it is a kind of self-confidence booster when your skin is clean and smooth.

If you really want anti-aging, I would suggest you just do 3 steps of skincare: Cleanse, Tretinoin/Retinol, and Moisturiser. Tretinoin is a prescription medicine proven to have an anti-aging effect and is cheap. You can go to your dermatologist and talk to them for a prescription. I don't feel like going to a dermatologist to pay for specialist fees so I just go to https://www.alldaychemist.com/ to buy tretinoin without a prescription. I buy

I would suggest here are three steps:
    1. 2x cleanse morning and night - Cerave Foaming Cleanser - okay price
    2. Tretinoin - Prescription or go buy retinol (a weaker version of tretinoin)
    3. Moisturiser - Cerave
4 (IMPORTANT) - Sunscreen daytime - La Roche Posay or Software

After you get used to these basic steps, you can then add in more steps just for the sake of enjoying that zen moment taking care of your face/skin.

    • GP can and will prescribe tretinoin. Mine has done so for years.

  • I use Cosmetic Capital. Cheap chemist. Buy Sukin Facial moisturiser and there restoring night cream for night. Recommend 👍

  • wow laundry powder havent heard of that one that would burn i reckon, my other half uses loreal

  • Been using the A Bit Hippy moisturizers for years and absolutely love them. My skin sucks it up and feels great every time. Although, I don't put them on if I'm about to do a bunch of exercise, as it is a little heaver. I mainly use it after a shower, if I'm not going to do anything to make me sweaty in the next hour.

  • Thanks guys, awesome tips all around here <3

  • PSA I'll try not to sound like an ad😂
I've had my fair share of struggles navigating the world of men's skincare. At one point, I was using products without much consideration for what they contained, only to realize the toll they were taking on my health, particularly my testosterone levels.

I started noticing dips in energy, a lack of that usual drive, and even some unexplained mood swings. It was concerning, to say the least. Digging deeper into the ingredients of the skincare products I'd been using revealed a shocking truth – phthalates and EDCs, the very chemicals known for interfering with testosterone production.

Discovering RAW ALPHA was game-changing. Their commitment to crafting products from natural ingredients that support testosterone levels was a game-changer for me. Making the switch not only improved my skin's health but also revitalized my energy and mental clarity. It was like reclaiming a part of myself that I hadn't realized was slipping away.

Now, I'm not just an advocate for their products; I'm a firm believer in their philosophy. High testosterone isn't just a biological aspect; it's a cornerstone of confidence, vitality, and overall well-being for men. RAW ALPHA isn't just about skincare; it's about reclaiming our inherent right to feel our best, inside and out.

Personal experiences like mine highlight the importance of being mindful of what we expose our bodies to, especially through skincare. Choosing brands like RAW ALPHA isn't just a decision for better grooming; it's a commitment to our health and reclaiming our natural strength as men.
