Skincare for Dudes

Hi folks. To all the men out there, what's your skincare routine? I am mid-30s and have never until the last 5 years bothered about skincare save for basic supermarket face cleansers. It's showing now…

Curious about how the guys out there look after your skin and what products (good value of course) you'd recommend?

I just drink heaps of water

    • Yep. Working on that! Thanks.

    • +4

I have done that during all my life, but it hasn't worked. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the suggestions and recommendations, but I've very little hope.

    • +1

      Wtf is heaps?

I be pissing every 15 minutes already

      • that sounds more like a prostate problem

I tie a plastic ice pack around my face and commence with the morning’s stretching exercises.
I take the ice-pack mask off and use a deep-pore cleanser lotion.
Then an herb-mint facial masque which I leave on for ten minutes.
I rinse again, with Cepacol. I wash the facial massage off with a spearmint face scrub.
In the shower I use first a water-activated gel cleanser, then a honey-almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub.
Vidal Sassoon shampoo is especially good at getting rid of the coating of dried perspiration, salts, oils, airborne pollutants and dirt that can weigh down hair and flatten it to the scalp which can make you look older. The conditioner is also good – silicone technology permits conditioning benefits without weighing down the hair which can also make you look older.

      • The inaccuracy of this annoys me but I appreciate the effort

        • It's an abridged version. What do you think I am - some kind of Psycho?

The skincare addicts subreddit (2m members) and https://www.reddit.com/r/30PlusSkinCare/ might be a good place to do research.

    • +1

      Good info.

I find the less I put on, the better.

I tried a routine, always ended up with pimples constantly.

      • +2

when you make a change to your skincare routine then expect a breakout as it's such sensitive balance.

The general idea is cleanser, toner (optional), moisturiser and sunscreen when outside.
Cleanser - clean dirt and grime
Toner - close up pores and tighten skin
        Moisturiser - refreshes and moisturises
        Sunscreen - protect

You can find different products and you'll want to identify your particular skin type (normal, dry, oily).

      • +8

After showering, use same bath towel to wipe balls, then face. ☑️

    • I'd take their advice with a pinch of salt. They are still convinced putting a towel on your pillow will give you good skin.

  • +3

Bro-To range is simple (and decent going by the Go-To equivalent).

Make sure you also wear sunscreen

    • ^ This. Bro-To and Go-To are exactly the same contents just different packaging, so go with whatever's cheapest at the time.

    • +1

Bro to is a rip off that is formulated badly. It's 90% marketing.

  • +2

Combo of Dermaveen, Loreal Men and L'occitane

I've had a bunch of skin conditions on and off over the years but best BFYB stuff was/is Dermaveen (which - along with other brands that fall into that boat - was also recommended to me by a dermatologist and my GP).

Generally stuff that is at a Chemist and is low irritant is really great products, regardless of brands.

  • +25

Just the plain simple stuff, drink water, Cetaphil (or any soap free face wash) and Cerave facial cream pm/am after washing. Personally I just use pm and then put on La Roche sunscreen as the SPF on the am is not strong enough. Use price hipster to setup alert and stock it up on specials.

To man who think skincare is for p*ssy. If you want to look like 50 at your 30s sure.

    • +2

Amen bro. Thanks for your advice.

      Agree - I don’t want to look like I’m 60 when I’m 35…

    • Which La Roche sunscreen do you use? There's so many different versions.
Do you use it daily or only when you're going out?

      • +1

This for face and body as its the cheapest per ml. But some find this sting eyes, if that is a concern then get the facial ones.

      • +2

i use la roche posay anthelios 50+ invisible fluid (i have oily and blemish prone skin). i tried anthelios XL which gives your face a matted look but it beads like crazy on your face and much more difficult to apply. the anthelios 50+ still has a non-shine finish so it's a better compromise imo. i use it before i leave the house on sunny days and not use it when im home

    • If you want to look like 50 at your 30s sure

      Avatar checks out

    • Puts french sounding cream on his face

      Ha ha, p*ssy.

      • Men already have organic anti-ageing lotion called seaman

moisturise my hands nightly, as i touch alot of boxes

  • +2

    QV Gentle Wash for face
    Dove soap for body.
    Cetaphil Moisturising Cream for face.
    El cheapo Sunscreen for face/neck.

Wife spends a small fortune on her skincare compared to mine.

Wife spends a small fortune on her skincare compared to mine.

      It's our god-given right to

      • +1

At least she's prettier than me.

        • -2

women tend to look prettiest and sexiest just before they wife someone up

I've read that research has found both sexes first focus on the face, so for women that's the first place to work on to increase their attractiveness to future mates.

    • +2

I'm doing something similar after decades of experimentation to manage my eczema.

      In the shower:

      • Dove Triple Moisturising Body Wash for my body
      • QV Face Gentle Cleanser for my face

      After showering:

      • QV Face Moisturising Day Cream on my face (includes sunscreen, which is the only long-term way to protect the skin)
      • Dove Intensive Nourishment for Extra Dry Skin on my body (although I rarely need it since the body wash is so good!)
      • I use to use face cream with built in sunscreen but I find it doesn’t protect as well as a cheapo separate spf50 sunscreen

    • +2

I just use whatever my wife buys. About 2 years ago I went through the bathroom to organise everything and realised how many products she had purchased but never used… She will have a week where she will be extremely regimented about it then it tapers off.

I hate waste so just ended up using it myself. Now I've gone from a 3 minute brush and floss before bed to a 10-15 minute routine every night. I've started buying my own now as people had commented that I was looking younger and the wife now has unsurprisingly started doing it regularly too.

Never thought I'd be in my mid-30s having an argument with the wife for using all of her eye cream…

That said. 'Protect Ya Neck' (sunscreen). Is the most important.

  • +7

Sunscreen is the biggest thing to use

  • To all the men out there, what's your skincare routine?

Should also invite the ladies to discuss. Other than post shaving care, there isnt much difference to women's routine. You still need your scrub, cleanse, toner, serum, moisturiser and mask procedure.

    • Make sure you don't clean, only cleanse. We cleanse faces.

    • +1

Well please share what you do then and why they're important parts of your skincare routine

I think OP just wanted a male focussed thread because much of the skincare community is marketed towards/comprised of women so men don't get a lot of good information (just marketed to with the words "For Men" or "Dude" or "Bro-"). Gendering these products also has the secondary effect of implying what one sex uses won't work as well for the other sex because of the fear it's not "optimally formulated" for you. All the estrogen in the women's sunscreen might make me grow breastseses

  • It's showing now…

    What are your facial concerns?

    • Just the usual - lines and some red spots (not sure if because it’s not hydrated enough)

      • Glow Lab/Sukin - foam cleanser

        Jojoba oil - moisturiser

MooGoo/Wotnot - sunscreen (but only if you touch grass regularly otherwise you don't need it)

        Mulberry silk pillowcase

        • -1

Thanks! This is very helpful. Appreciate it.

        • +6

Sukin is a bottom-of-the-barrell quailty 'natural' product that I would not recommend - much better results from a basic cerave/dermaveen/QV cleanser, especially if you are wearing a chemical sunscreen as the Sukin would likely not work well enough to remove the sunscreen.

Jojoba oil is a lovely oil and amazing moisturiser for the skin types it works for, but it is an oil and all oils are unfortunately comodogenic (block pores). Some people when using will get blemishes, especially if you are prone to blemishes already.

As for MooGoo/WotNot sunscreen, they are a mineral sunscreen (zinc rather than chemicals) which again depending on the skin type may or may not suit you.

Skincare is so individual and depends on the person for what works, but I just wanted to add in the negatives for these products. For a very specific person, the 'natural' skincare routine with a natural cleanser, an oil, and mineral sunscreen works amazing. For most people, it doesn't.
I didn't want to attack this comment at all, but as you are asking for advice and this comment is very specific I wanted to share the nuances of some of these items.

I have always been using the laundry liquid and no issues so far.

    • +1

Oh that’s good to hear. Which brand of laundry liquid do you use for your face that you’d recommend?

      • +3

        Whatever is on special :)

        • A true believer. I’ll keep an eye out!

    • Washing powder exfoliates better

  • I’ve not had any issues with BBF soap so far 🤷🏽‍♂️

Subscribe to the Patrick Bateman method:

I believe in taking care of myself, and a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the ice pack, I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, I use a water activated gel cleanser. Then a honey almond body scrub. And on the face, an exfoliating gel scrub. Then apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

of the view that skin 'care' products have additives that make your skin worse if you stop using them. also applies to lip balm. hat/long sleeve & sunscreen hwhen in the sun at all times

    • +2

I feel like another way to word you first sentence is "skincare products have ingredients that make your skin better when you use them."

  • +4

i'd definitely go the full hog - lip injects, cheek injections, brazilian butt lift & breast augmentation for starters …

  • A face moisturiser with sunscreen for the day.
Wear a big hat when outdoors.
Cleanser for face in the shower.
Serum on the face for the night.
    Carmex tube for chapped lips.

Start with Chemist Warehouse and if you can afford more, try Myer.

    • Does the moisturiser with built in sunscreen really last the whole day though?

      • But are you really outdoors for the whole day though?

        • Up to you.

      • when outdoors.

      • +2

I go the other way and use sunscreen with moisturizer added, and it works for most of the day (albeit I'm an office worker)

I use any of the Cancer Council ones :)

    • A face moisturiser with sunscreen for the day.

      Any recommendations? Do they smell?

      • Any day cream by Loreal with spf will do.
Loreal is actually a big company and invests in their research like Lancome does.
There is also a Clarins range for men but it's pricey.
Dove body silk tub on arms, hands and legs in the evening. It absorbs easily and isn't greasy.

      • Been using Natio for Men moisturiser with SPF; it doesn't make your face shiny like normal sunscreen.

    • Can you suggest any good brands in Myer? Feel like most of us just use stuffs at CW, feel like that good enough?

  • +8

How accurate is a lot of this? As in, I'm a dude who doesn't drink a lot of water, never uses any creams, and most people think I look 25 at 35…

I had a quick look for evidence and it seems like the most important thing is to just wear sunscreen. I don't do too much outdoor stuff so maybe have been lucky, but it seems like a lot of skincare stuff is just full of shit/waste of money. Similar to taking multivitamins essentially.

Genuinely curious if there's much evidence as taking any random skincare thing seems like it's not going to do much.

    • +8

It is a mix of taking care of yourself and genetics.

Pretty much the same with fitness. You wanna do what you can despite genetics, don't just rely on it to get by.

      • +1

Yes, but I can point to actual evidence showing fitness helps in a myriad of ways. So it's a poor comparison you're using.

So far noone has actually showed any evidence to support any of the skincare claims and a casual search by me couldn't identify it. No point spending money on stuff if there's no benefit and you're just the victim of advertising.

    • +4

You're only 35, but if you don't look after your skin (which covers your whole body btw), you could end up looking leathery like Donatella Versace.
If you do look after your skin, you can end up looking like Madonna.
It's important to have skin checks too.
It might not seem important now but it can all go downhill at 40, along with your health.

      • +3

Agree. Depending on your skin type, you have to choose the correct skin care. I have very oily skin, so I'm using oil control skin care - mostly Nivea, but also Bulldog / Rock Face face wash, moisturiser and lip balm. Fortunately I don't have probem changing the brand - just to make sure I choose the right product for my skin type.

      • Again - can you provide any actual evidence? Otherwise I can just as equally say by using moisturisers you could end up looking leathery. If there's no evidence either way then our claims are both as valid.

    • +2

Looking 'aged' is not just about skincare either, it's about bone structure and facial muscles and the way that they degrade over time, on top of the health of the skin.
When people are older and have taken care of their skin, the bone/muscle changes that happen with age often don't look as harsh.

As long as your skin is adequately hydrated and not damaged, you will be fine. The problem is how many things can damage/dehydrate the skin.

    • +1

Are you sure people are being totally genuine when they say "you look 25"?

Could be kinda like when people are trying to be polite and tell mums in their 40s/50s they could pass as their daughter's sister …

      • +2

I'm almost 40 whitey and at my last two jobs everyone thought I was late 20s. My skin isn't great or anything. I never used moisturiser until about 5 years ago.

I put it mostly down to spending my 20s inside playing world of warcraft and the way I act and dress is still like a povo 25 year old haha.

      • When it comes up in conversation and I need to tell people my age, I add 10 years to it, and nobody is surprised at all lol

        • Shit I might that for my own amusement too now haha chuck on 20 years

      • Yep. I am sure - these have been 18 year olds without a filter to 60 year olds. I mean, sure, one person may lie but if it keeps happening it's unlikely.

So far, none of the above posts have provided a shred of evidence to back up their claims, so I'm still quite doubtful. Just saying things out of fear/anxiety of not wanting to look old isn't evidence.

    • What's your heritage?

One day might just go KABLAM

    • -1

Yes it's mostly marketing bull@#$. Drink water, limit sun exposure. Everything else is snake oil.

    • re Tretinoin that I have mentioned in other posts (which is a stronger version of retinol).
