  • Wow, that is cheap!

  • Can anybody recommend a cheap receiver to go with these?
Want to set up something semi-decent for my dad on the cheap.

    • +10

Probably just get a sound bar tbh

If you want to do something for cheap maybe check gumtree for second hand units. Even a low end receiver will set you back half a grand new, where you might get something for under $100 if you don’t need anything too recent.

      • +1

Although this is good suggestion, make sure the receiver you buy has HDMI.. lot of old receivers on market have just analog inputs… No use buying those.

        • Depends what you’re after and whether the dad just wants to run video devices through it. For a smaller 3 speaker setup you could use optical audio from the TV and connect devices to the TV direct, assuming you want to use a TV at all and aren’t using some other audio devices as a source.

If video is important, you’ll want to check the HDMI version as well and make sure it’s at a spec you want. On gumtree I see stacks of 1.4 or so spec 1080p receivers but not so many 4k ones currently. Haven’t noticed any newer HDMI 2.1 ones in my area.

Checking the video I/O does apply to a store purchased model too however.

    • I'd say just look for what seems to be the recommended budget receiver (probs a Yamaha something) then try find it on marketplace or Gumtree used.

Also check out the Denon s570.

Yamaha NS-F160 Floor Standing Speakers $699 for a pair is cheap too…

    • +1

Great spot!! Looking at a Budget Home Theater and these Floors are just the perfect start I needed. Cheers!

      • Search for Yamaha speaker packages on Google.. Harvey Norman has some good options..

        • I purchased the floorstanding from this deal as they were too goos to pass on. Also found atmos celing speakers (Yamaha NS-IC600) for 299 of Amazon and thats covered as well.

Now just need a Center, Rear surround and a Sub. Any recommendations?

  • Thoughts about using these as rears and centre alongside some KEFs. Just want something cheap and temporary for 5.1 surround.

    • +4

Buy a matching kef centre speaker, rears don't really matter.

      • Thanks!

      • That is like 4x the price mate.

  • +3

Ppl think its cheap and i have a brand new jamo 5.1 setup trying to sell for $250 and no takers! Go figure!

    • -5

      What is Jamo? Lol

    • +2

Used to be a well-known brand in Europe in the 80s and 90s, of decent quality.
No idea of newer versions though… $250 for a 5.1 set seems a pretty decent price, maybe just bad luck?
Selling second hand is a fickle business anyway

      • +2

Have a 5.1 jamo setup in cherry and it sounds sensational, picked it up for $200. I think it retailed for $2500 in 2008

    • Some people think this is cheap. Other people may think yours are expensive. Who knows if the two groups intersect…

    • Is it S801? Not sure how ppl are ignoring a 5.1 setup.. probably you have told pick up only? That limits the number of buyers

      • Its Jamo A 102 HCS 6 setup.

  • +4

    Hmmm
Generic black bookshelf speakers and a centre…

Would be better off getting something decent off gumtree or marketplace its full of speakers and av equipment for less than this. Everyone's transitioning to soundbars

Anything by klipsch, b&w, wharfedale, dali would sound and look better

    • Yeah not too huge on Yamaha either. I'm running Monitor Audios in one room and Wharfedale in the other and they do very well.

  • Does this come with lengthy speaker cables?

  • +1

Does this require amplifiers? Can I just connect them to my TV or my current EDIFIER? Cheers

    • +1

These need to be powered from a receiver.

      • Roger. Does it mean also i can just connect them to my yamaha soundbar? I was told that soundbar has built in AV receiver/amplifier.

        • +1

I wouldn't think you can do that with a soundbar.
You would need a separate AVR along with pair of fronts and a subwoofer if looking at buying this combo.

        • +1

No, that's not possible. Soundbars dont power speakers that they did not come bundled with usually.

  • Input power is tiny…. put these little speakers on a half decent surround sound amp and you'll pop them.

    https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/speakers/ns-p…

    • 80W would be an insane amount of power to put into anything not horribly inefficient. I collect vintage amps and have several 15w amps that are unlistenably loud on decent speakers above 50% volume.

Edit: this is how loud 1w can be:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaiEDYB5c9M

      • The above surround speaker has a nominal input power of 20w RMS, and 60w max RMS. I'm not arguing what's loud or not… I'm reminding people to CHECK THEIR SPECS!

There are a lot of home theater amps out there that will pump out much more than that on the surround channel. A lot of older Yamaha amps for instance have 80w or 100w on the surround channel… and they aren't exactly audiophile quality amps worth thousands of dollars.

All I'm saying is if anyone thinks these $700RRP speakers are a direct replacement (due to their RRP) need to be aware of their limitations. They will not handle the power of most decent amps out there… even amps that are now selling for a few hundred bucks on Gumtree.

  • Use these as surround, not much output is required from rears

  • Todd’s site says they dispatch every Tuesday and Friday. So I guess these will ship tomorrow.

In the meantime, does anyone know if these will work fine with an old Yamaha RX-V365 Yamaha receiver as two rear surrounds? Will just keep the centre as a spare
