How safe are these things? Seems way to cheap.

    • +3

If they were unsafe they would have been recalled a long time ago.

      Also

      AGA Approval No: 7095

Arguably safer than many of the uncertified (in Australia at least) GaN Chargers that get posted here ,

          And every disposable vape.

    • +1

Certified, but I'd not taking one camping etc where it could get knocked about a bit. I wouldn't buy one at all actually

    • How safe are these things? Seems way to cheap.

Is there such a thing, when dealing/playing with fire? Its a given, proceed with caution and use common sense whenever applicable.

    • +1

All the important bits should be safe enough if they're actually approved, it's just everything else about it that will be what you're expect for a gas cooker that retails for $55

    • +1

Much safer than using firewood for cooking.

      • I see you have the same issue as me securing the cooking utensil to the fire source as I strictly only use the finest gunpower. Like a damn wrestling match sometimes I accidentally put a gram or two extra.

    • it was around $50 in summer so Kmart is just doing clearance to clear old stock.

  • +1

I have a very similar one (doesn't need a regulator)…it is almost impossible to get a low flame…it's either high or slightly less high…a low flame requires minute gas adjustments to the point the flame will go out.

    • +1

      You should use the Force.

    • It it is a regular problem, get a cheap butane stove as well, so you have a 3'rd burner for slow simmering.

  • +4

Adding to this Kmart have the butane heaters on clearance for $29 down from $69 too. Picked one up the other day it goes alright, similar item at Bunnings/Anaconda is $79

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/halo-peak-butane-heater-432…

  • It's 29 in My local store and the service said its up to the store manager what price they gona put.

  • +6

    Daniel Andrews says no

  • Scans as $29 in Brunswick.

  • Is Butane or LPG better for camping?

    • +1

Butane is readily available and cheap, but doesn't work in cooler weather. The gas becomes a liquid around 4c or something. The cylinders generally cool themselves down a bit lower than ambient as they release the gas. I find below about 15c ambient they don't work great. Have to warm up the cylinder by holding it in your hand or something first.

      • Iwatani have a metal strip that gets heated by the flame to warm the gas canister & help with this when the gas gets low. They're not cheap stoves though

        • Indeed, some people do it themselves too, calling it a Moulder Strip after the guy who came up with it. I did it to my bunnings stove using a piece of copper.

To be honest not sure if I'd recommend it, I feel nervous with how hot the strip has to get to make any noticeable difference. Considering just getting a liquid fuel stove instead.

    • You can carry a lot more gas with LPG if you're going away for any more than a night, but a butane stove is handy for short trips/cooks.
So a size & weight vs hours tradeoff

  • the link doesn't work. however, not sure if Bunnings do price match for this
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/gasmate-2-burner-portable-campin…

    • Getting Bunnings to price match is hard at the best of times and they would rarely ever match a non identical item.
Often identical items will be the same tools but Bunnings get unique item numbers so they weasel out of it.

  • Scored one at Kmart Moe (VIC). Warragul as apparently out.

  • I'm tempted. I bought a Fancy $80 stove from BCF, and couldn't even light the damn thing. I think I'll return it. Had the gas on full, could hear it coming out the burner, but holding a lit match against it did nothing. Does this Kmart one have a peizo lighter? That would be handy.

    • +1

no, you need to bring a lighter, last summer we had to borrow lighter at our neighbour campsite on Christmas day as we forgot that in the last minute.

  • Link is dead but at this price, it'd be hand to have around as we have a gas bottle that rarely gets used with the wok outside. Will try my local tomorrow!
