Based on the title, I thought it was a sequel to this book, but it's a different author.

I thought you were going to put the Lenny Bruce book: "How to talk dirty and influence people"

I recommend shitposting on ozbargain, Dale has nothing on my trackrecord

      JV would like a word…

  • +1

Has it been updated since its 1936 release? I read it about 20 years ago and it seemed dated then as well.

    • Everything comes back into fashion

    • +2

Did you make any friends and influence anyone?

It's timeless from my perspective regarding the main tenets it outlines, it is a good read albeit basic in some aspects.

    • +20

yeah, they've added TikTok and Instagram influencing techniques and lightly, ever so lightly talk about the benefits of block-chain and how NFTs can really win all the friends regardless of class, ethnicity or Ethereum wallet.

      • +7

I thought the newest edition was interesting despite Carnegie's NFT shoveling. Some explanations on negging vs gaslighting, useful out of office auto-reply templates, and the glossary of Twitch emotes is handy. The chapter on Myspace top friend selection is outdated though, should have been removed.

      • sir, u totes missed AI…

How to Win Friends and Influence People

Appear rich and be a smooth talker

Actually his tip is to let the other person do all the talking. He has an anecdote about meeting his hero but he was fuming at the end of the night because he couldn’t get a word in edgewise. Then his hero told him earnestly that he was the best conversationalist he ever met.

  • Only for Amazon USA?

  • +8

Be a total push over, be agreeable, avoid conflict.. that was my take away from the book - and didn't exactly seem like the foundations for good friendships.

    • That's probably how to get a friend in 1936..
      Though times I know

  • the art of pickup?

  • +2

Worth reading, if only so you can get a better idea of when salespeople et al are trying to use people skills at you. Not sure I'd recommend using any of the techniques in this book except with the absolute lightest touch - for example using someone's name to "build rapport" comes off as creepy more than anything.

    • +7

      i agree totally dudleydoright

    • +1

I can't stand when people keep using my name in conversation.
Also when people touch you when they speak to you, is that one of his too?

      • I don't recall that one, to be honest. Probably not?

Honestly, for the most part the advice in it isn't bad - take an interest in other people, arguing is mostly counterproductive, etc. It's just very outdated and people mine it for techniques then proceed to use them like a sledgehammer (or so it feels like).

A book to teach narcissists on how to hide their narcissism.

You can literally summarise the book to one line: be a normal polite person.

  • -8

    It didn't work.

    • +1

      What part?

      • Well, I also had issues.

Comes up with a "TO BUY THIS TITLE FROM AMAZON.COM.AU, PLEASE UPDATE YOUR DEFAULT KINDLE STORE TO AMAZON.COM.AU BY CLICKING THE BUTTON BELOW". Which is confusing since it is already set to the Australian store. When you click on the link it goes to a broken page. Tried it on 3 amazon accounts.

Hopefully most people don't get these issues.

      @santomaharaj

Here you go (still free on US site):

      https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CD7FZ3F8

If you have trouble with finding products, and titles in this case, Amazon's own ASIN code for this title B0CD7FZ3F8) should give you an equivalent on any of their other geographic sites. Just put the ASIN into the search field on the Amazon page. Restrictions such as DRM, copyright restrictions may apply though.

      • Thank you… good to know and really helps…

    outdated

I read through this a while ago. It's pretty meh. A lot of it is to be polite, let others have their say, and remember their name. Common sense stuff, not sure you need a book to tell you that.

The book title is pretty awful though, always felt it sounded like "How to make people like you when you're a manipulative tool".

  • -4

If you need a book to teach you how to make friends, I think you're beyond help at that point.

  • The only message I got out of this book was to be like a dog

  • My unmatched perspicacity coupled with my sheer indefatigability makes me a feared opponent in any realm of human endeavor.

  • I only wish call centre people would stop abusing the name thing. They really think it works. I never gave them my real name lol
