  • That's great price. It would be better it was a M2 Max chip.

@T1OOO: He's making a reference dude. Is this your thing?

            • +1

@SpainKing: Easy there spainking. Is your thing calling out call outs on things just to impress ozites?

              • -1

@gakko: I find it cathartic to call them out but it's dumb to assume anyone's impressed by it

I read a lot of books when I was younger that had the message "treat others how you would like them to treat you" so when I see someone being a (profanity) for no reason… I guess it gives me an excuse to let out the piece of shit within myself (and most of us)

When I see a group of OzBargainers having fun, making jokes and references and someone comes in acting superior and trying to shut it down it feels justified to me in the moment (especially when that person can't be bothered to use syntax in their epic burn). Whether it's justified isn't really for you or I to determine

If you have an alternative point of view I welcome you to share it so that I may consider it and maybe change my ways

                PS:

                Were you impressed?

                • +1

@SpainKing: My friend I agree with you. I was mockingly just saying the same kinda stuff as the op for a laugh.

I like calling out bullies too. After too many years of sitting back letting it fly!

                  • -1

@gakko: Oh sweet, must've whooshed over my head. Now I wish I didn't spend so much time exposing my thought process and typing this out while my girlfriend wanted attention

It's good to call them out but we must try our best to never become the bullies, it's a slippery slope but I wish you good luck in fighting the good fight (with words and not violence)

            • @SpainKing: Lol I was referencing too.

M2 pro is 1.8k and similar CPU/GPU benchmarks I believe? Longer support, Bit less ram, similar GPU/cpu power on benches and over 500 dollars cheaper?

      https://www.umart.com.au/product/apple-mac-mini-m2-pro-chip-…

      • mini vs Studio?

        • +1

Yeah comparing benchmarks of the m2 pro mini vs m1 max studio. It's pretty similar. It doesn't matter what they call it, what matters is the tech inside.

If I was to guess the m1 max has slightly better single core performance and the m2 has better multi. I think most people buying Mac's wouldn't notice the difference.

      • big thing for some people was m2 has hdmi2.1 and m1 had hdmi2, extreme niche but for the pros who needed it, it was a bummer. The chips are extremely similar otherwise, at least outside of benchmarks

      • +1

All fair points except for this:

        Bit less ram

Half the RAM. 16 gigabytes less to be precise. That could be quite important to many buyers.

If I was to guess the m1 max has slightly better single core performance and the m2 has better multi.

        Other way around.

You're right that nobody will be able to tell the difference though.

        • I figured the ram in the m2 might be faster even though it is halved, but idk how apple works sometimes.

          • @RI4V4N: They both use LPDDR5 6400 RAM, but the amount of RAM was my concern, not the speed.

16GB is plenty for the average consumer, but if you're running Lightroom and or lots of VM's you'll want 32GB. Here's somebody using 32GB of memory with Lightroom and Photoshop.

    • When discounts hit like this it means m3 launch in September is gonna drop and probably lower prices even more hopefully.

      • No, M2 Studio only came out a couple of months ago.

  • Costco has good prices too

  • +11

It doesn't float my boat, but you should get it for $2355.05 if you price match OW to https://www.jw.com.au/product/apple-mac-studio-m1-max-chip-1….

    • super win

      • mobileciti has a coupon making it 2365.xx

  • Notable that this is on Clearance (seemingly everywhere, except at Apple).

    • +1

Rumours are that the M3 is coming this year, so not surprising. Apple is pretty good at clearing their stock before a new one comes in.

    • Apple never does sales on their normal channels. If they want to do a discount campaign it's always through another retailer. No mistake, these sales are very likely via Apple because no way these retailers have enough hardware just sitting around the warehouse.

  • -1

This seems very expensive for the specs

    • windows pc is cheaper.

      • +3

Broad comparison. What ARM based windows PC can you buy with this performance?

        • +3

I am wondering if developers and video production people would really care about the energy consumption difference.

          • -1

@Eeples: I am wondering if you know what computer do production people use before making this comment 🤔

            • +2

@avoidfullprice: Not sure your comment makes sense……

But, I’m fairly sure they are more interested in rendering speeds for example than wattage.

And similarly more interested in rendering speed than marginal price savings.

            • +3

@avoidfullprice: Depends, if you are a pro YouTuber or "influencer" you can probably get away with anything. Adobe exists on both.

If you are a pro architect, animator, game dev etc, you are using Windows cos lol, there is a reason a 4090rtx is 2/3 of these in size. Some software still doesn't run properly or natively on m1/m2 architecture too.

Mac stuff is good. The m1/2 chips are great for the casual market. The laptops have amazing battery life. It is expensive for what you get though. High end Mac stuff is insanely expensive for what you get. High end Mac stuff doesn't come even close to what you can get with a 4090 though for the jobs that need high level computational power (pretty sure the m2 max loses out to a laptop 4070 just).

              • +1

@RI4V4N: If you're a video editor on the go, the macbook is a no-brainer when it comes to efficiency and battery life. Plugged in a 4090 laptop will indeed outperform the m2 max. For video/photo editing would a similarly priced PC have better performance? Not sure.

              • @RI4V4N: You can carry this in a bag though not so with a massive pc towery with cooling for a graphics card. You mention size but this is the whole computer not just the card.

          • @Eeples: As a developer I would say yes I never thought I would care about the energy consumption that much until I got my first Mac m1.
It’s just super quite and performant at the same time, which I find it hard to switch back to a energy-monster Windows laptop.

        • +1

I got new Surface Pro X SQ2 for AU$950, ordered from Amazon US couple of months ago.

    • +1

Honestly, it's hard to make a direct comparison.

If you build a more compact PC, or quieter PC, it will obviously cost more. A x86 CPU in a desktop form factor will also draw more power. Then there are factors like OS. Is a use Unix like OS preferred? One that is easy to use and Unix certified.

If I was purely productivity focused with a workload that is compatible with Mac and wanted a desktop machine, this would probably be a strong contender based on noise and size.

      • +3

With a price over $2000, I would expect 64gb of ram and a good GPU to be considered a deal

        • +4

Then you're clearly not in the target market.

Corporate PCs also cost more than many consumer PCs and often don't come with a GPU. Just like cars, different PCs are built for different purposes.

This stuff is also all soldered in and non upgradable. Cos of course apple would.

          • -1

@RI4V4N: I think you are ignorant of the architecture.

            • +2

@Eeples: I am very aware of the fibs apple tells people to justify their soldering.

              • -1

@RI4V4N: memory has to be soldered since its an soc design but no idea why they pair the ssds to the board even though they are socketed

                • +1

@iPodVideo: What do you think the actual gains are though for it being designed that way? Minimal I bet.

                  • -1

@RI4V4N: Didn't say there was a good reason, just stating the facts. Still no reason to pair SSDs though.

                  • @RI4V4N: Massive gains. That’s the whole idea of the design. Plenty of YouTube videos or wiki to explain this if you are actually interested.

The only reason 99% of computer users would not consider this is due to gaming. After that is a personal choice between macOS and windows. I have both and find macOS a far better experience than windows. Gaming… windows still generations ahead.

                    • +2

@basketcase86: The thing is I've seen plenty of YouTube videos saying there is very minimal gains.

If you are not a creative professional who needs actual computational power, or play any games, I agree a Mac or a PC is basically the same. You could also get something much cheaper than the Mac though. The tiny form factor probably appeals to people though and I agree the laptops vs other laptops are great for a number of non-os reasons. Just depends what you like. Generations ahead is fanboy talk. Not even worth my time addressing that.

The m2 max GPU is around the same level as a laptop 4070. Not even a real one. So make of that what you will.

            • +1

@Eeples: There is no reason to solder the SSD to the mainboard, especially when you can't even boot off an external drive when it dies:

              https://youtu.be/0qbrLiGY4Cg?si=FebEgKCIxyNbK7Rk

              • +1

@Dogsrule: Yeah, it's bloody stupid. Not all macs have SSDs soldered on though, in the case of this post, the Studio, it's slotted in like an M.2.

                • @snuke: Oh nice, didn't know that. Should allow for easy replacements in the future.

      • +1

A cheap/easy small factor is going to be that nzxt h1 v2. Since it is semi setup to you (cables, ryzer, PSU, CPU cooler) for 300. Just need a CPU, GPU, itx mobo, ram and an ssd. You can of course get cheaper small factors but some are a real pain to setup.

Im pretty sure you could get a cpu, 4070ti (the m2 max loses out to 4070 laptop GPUs), 4tb m2 ssd and 32/64 gig of faster ram in there for around the same price.

It will be twice the size though and not as travel friendly.

  • -1

The 24 GPU. And 512gb price on the apple store is $2519 .. am i missing something? Not much of a sale

  • +2

For only a $500 difference it would be better to get the M2 version. 60hz vs 144hz.

    • +2

      $700 if you price beat

  • +10

$2,850.10 for M2 32/512 via AOC Edu store which everyone can use - https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/shop/buy-mac/mac-studio…

Extra 10 CPU cores, 6 GPU Cores, HDMI 2.1, fixed fan noise issue M1 had.

    M2 512GB will have slower SSD speed vs M1 512 Gb, M2 Write and Read Speed 3400 / 3000 vs M1 4200 /5200

    • +3

      M2 Max

4K resolution at up to 240Hz over HDMI

      M1 only has HDMI2.0

    • 2023's Mac Studio M2 base model is a better buy compared to M1 base model:
      * 2 more CPU cores, and faster speed per CPU core
      * 6 more GPU cores, and faster processing per GPU core
      * Bluetooth 5.3 vs 5.0
      * HDMI 2.1 vs 2.0
      * WiFi 6E vs 6

All these could add up to $350+ easily. Prices in Australia has increased due to weaker AUD/USD exchange rates in 2023 compared to 2022.

I bought a M2 Max Mac Studio 2 months ago, and upgraded to 1TB SSD to have better SSD speed. It is an AWESOME machine.

      • +1

M2 Max Mac Studio 2 months ago, and upgraded to 1TB SSD to have better SSD speed

I did this too, bumped to 1TB for better speeds, and just a little more head room internally, then attached 2TB M2 SSD via Acasis TBU405 Thunderbolt enclosure for 2800/2800 speeds.

        • Been researching an enclosure. This looks the goods. Which M2 SSD did you get?

        • just wondering how much did you paid for ur TBU405?

          • @kenneth88: $150 delivered. It was USD $110 on the Acasis site, and there is a $10 off code that they show on the listing.

            https://www.acasis.com/collections/all-products/products/aca…

            • @snuke: Was going to ask this question also. Thanks snuke. Amazon Germany shows AU$184 delivered. AUD has been hammered this month. Looks like $150 is long gone.

              • @VerticallyIntegrated: It's now USD $104.99 delivered (Acasis Store), so about AU $164 right now.

                • @snuke: hey snuke, sorry more questions. is your studio on 24/7? do you keep the enclosure/drive attached all the time or only plug in when needed?

i’ll be keeping iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto on there (plus have appropriate backups) so mine would be on all the time.

                  • @VerticallyIntegrated: All good, ask away. I Never turn it off, I let it go to sleep under default OS conditions.
Enclosure will never be removed, at this stage it only contains items for a cloud sync, eg, all Dropbox stuff. I have Photos (iPhoto hasn't existed in quite some time) on the internal drive, but it's sub 100GB in size.

My initial plan is that everything that can have a could backup goes onto external, anything that can't will be internal and backed up to another external.
Needing to figure out if I get 2TB iCloud via Turkey/Argentina, or go Backblaze.

Videos, I have a NAS for movies/tv etc… I haven't shot too much myself for a while, but for that with Final Cut Pro, probably store on external, and work via internal. I need to see where it all settles and how much of my 1TB internal I want to keep free at basically all times.
iTunes can probably live on the NAS too, although I only have a few TB left in space on that.

  • Thumbnail looks like a toaster

  • I’ve been looking for a new Mac for FCPX. anyone know if this is better than the m2 pro Mac mini?

    • +1

anyone know if this is better than the m2 pro Mac mini?

Yes, in all aspects except price. As for FCPX, it depends on what you're doing with it, exporting to H.265 will show the biggest benefit due to the dual encoders.
I flipped and flopped between M2 Pro Mini and Studio for ages, in the end it came down to RAM, I seem to use a lot (16Gb right now doing very little) and as soon as you spend any money on the stock M2 Pro Mini to improve it's performance, you are simply better off getting a Studio. Bumping the M2 Pro Mini to 32GB Ram is $500, and that's half way to the studio wit all its other benefits.

Compare the two rices using the AOC Education store portal, unless you have access to your own Education store - https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/store
You do not need to be part of the AOC to use this store

  • -1

    Will it run Crysis?

    • +1

Crysis doesn't run on directx 12, so probably not. It should run fine in parallels being an older game.

  • Nice. I love mine. I've been playing Diablo 4 on it with Dualsense when the ps5 TV is in use :p

    https://www.outcoldman.com/en/archive/2023/06/07/playing-dia…

  • Only apple could sell a PC with 512GB non-upgradeable store for 2.5k, all to force people to step up the overpriced storage ladder to a more reasonable storage capacity. I guess it's slightly better than the travesty that is their 8/256 Mac laptops…

  • Note to consider is the no. of displays compatibility.
    https://plugable.com/blogs/news/how-many-external-monitors-c…

M1 Max can run 4 external displays.
While M2 Mac Mini can only run 2 displays.
