Anyone know if these are any good?

    • +3

I got 1tb 790 3 months ago very happy with it it surpassed the speed test against my old Samsung 860 .

      • +1

        Alright cool, thanks man

      • Would you recommend for primary OS drive?

        • +1

          No because no DRAM cache

        • +4

Yes and I am using it as primary OS very fast .

        • +7

If your using this as a everyday PC, for just playing some games/movies/internet/work, this drive will be fine. Just try and get something with good Endurance/Warranty. (compare it to a Kingston NV2 which is around this price. Its Endurance is 320TBW/3year for a 1TB drive, where this 1000TBW/5year and more than twice its speed)

If your after the best of the best and no substitute, you write/read large files all day and time is a factor, or you want bragging rights. Then you may want to look at something with DRAM. you could almost buy 2TB for the cost of a good DRAM 1TB Gen4 drive with similar speeds.

A drive with DRAM will be better, but depending on your use case, it will do the job fine. If you need a drive with DRAM, you most likely already know it and have it.

They're pretty good. I'm getting 7400mb/s read speeds and 6700mb/s write speeds. Temps can get up to 74C (21C ambient temp according to my motherboard) because the top label is made from a cloth tape which acts as an insulator rather than as a heat spreader. Tried sticking thermal pad and heatsink on top of the label and temps stayed at 74C at full load (5x1gb crystaldiskmark runs). Removed the top label and stuck the thermal pad and heatsink on and temps dropped to 49C under full load and 44C under gaming loads.

I figured removing the top label wouldn't void warranty as the warranty info seems to be on the label on the underside. Top label is just branding.

The heatsink I'm using is a Jeyi finned heatsink from AliExpress that is currently selling for $3.09AU with free shipping. Tried to post link but it got blocked by the ozbargain bots.

      • It's got me thinking to swap out my 2Tb PNY CS1031 for this. My motherboard has a full heatsink for all three secondary NVMe drives, so it just comes down to a question of whether removing that label does void warranty or not.

        • I can't make any guarantees on warranty since I haven't had any issues with mine, but it's kinda silly that they would use a label made of insulating material. The cheap heatsink was definitely worth it though.

My Gigabyte X570I does have a fan on top of the drive but it's also to cool the chipset underneath. It only kicks in when the chipset temps hit 40C, which it doesn't during the benchmarking. When the fan doesn't kick in, it kind of chokes airflow to the SSD. Kind of annoying that this is the only fan that gigabyte blocks full fan control on, I'm stuck picking from their profiles.

      • Yeah it's a good idea to use a heatsink with one of these M.2 SSD. You could use some thing like this heatsink cooler specially designed for M.2 SSD drives.

        https://www.pccasegear.com/products/56573/silverstone-tp05-s…

        • The one I used from AliExpress was $3.09 and free shipping from the brand Jeyi. It is similar in design to that drive but doesn't have the bottom bracket and isn't as tall. I considered using something similar to that style of heatsink but the slots on my X570I have tight clearances around the side so it wouldn't fit. I would assume these would give better temp drops than mine.

      • please pm the link! Thanks

Would you happen to know the NAND type used in these SSDs? Guessing / hoping YMTC Xtacking 3 (4th gen). In flash utilities, they are commonly reported as YMTC 4.0 NAND.

        • If so are these good? 4 tb is tempting.

          • +1

@John Doh: If the 4TB ones are Maxio and Xtacking 3 (not 2) then it is worth considering. I don't own these so I am just basing on what I read on other SSDs with similar setup, 2TB or greater, 8 channels SSDs (most of them with DRAM) are hard to beat and the Maxio controller used in NM790 starts to show its weakness. However, for most people, under general usage, won't really notice.

Basically, right now, the 4TB one is well priced. However, back in our mind, we all wish for a semi Amazon pricing error on a 4TB Samsung, WD, SK Hynix or Seagate flagship. On the other hand, PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs are really overkill for most of us. How are we going to copy 4TB worth of data to this SSD? From HDD? If so, we are talking about the source device doing 100MB/s.

      • Very useful info, thanks. Mine does run very hot but couldn’t work out why. Will try that when I get home.

      • It's extremely helpful if you add some sort of cooling to any SSD. Running it at elevated temps is basically cooking it and burning away it's longevity. It's also on of a way manufacturers do simulated aging by heating them up to high temperatures.

    • I got the 1TB a couple of month ago. I moved my VMs to it from a Firecude 530, and they run faster.

    • +1

4 TB can be added to a Steam Deck. I am going to give it a go…

Theoretical speeds vs practical speeds. One of these is a myth.

Damn could have got this for PS5 drive and saved myself 30 bucks.

They should be pretty good, YMTC NAND + Maxiotech Controllers have reviewed really well

    Drive specs https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/lexar-nm790-1-tb.d1493

Netac NV7000-T has the same nand and controller and that reviewed extremely well:

    https://www.techpowerup.com/review/netac-nv7000-t-2-tb/

Same controller with older 128layer version of YMTC nand
    https://www.techpowerup.com/review/acer-predator-gm7-1-tb/

I was contemplating buying the Netac 2tb drive via Aliexpress this morning, but for this pricing I'll get this Lexar drive instead

Where is the new store? :)

    • -4

I went to their FB page and it says "Mulgrave HQ Grand Opening" - Victoria
Can someone who goes into the store snap the QR code and share it?

  • Will this work inside a satechi usb c hub expansion for Mac Mini?

    • No, they only work with a M.2 Sata SSD. This is an M.2 Nvme SSD. They look similar but have different pins on the connector.

    • I have the Hagibis is one which does support nvme but nowhere near full speed. Satechi we’re a little tight-fisted with their offering, in my view.

  • Wish I'd jumped on one of the previous deals for SSDs that included a heatsink so I could use it with the PS5.

    • Is it possible to buy a heatsink casing and add it to the ssd?

      • +1

Yes, I've done this with a SK Hynix SSD. I got this one but didn't do extensive searching for cheapest. It comes with two thick and two think thermal pads that you stick to your drive depending on if the chips of the SSD are on one side (one thick + one thin) or both sides (two thins)

      • +1

Yes, scroll up and see my other long post. With a $3.09 heatsink from AliExpress and removing the top (no warranty just branding) label from the drive my temps dropped from 74C at full load to 49C at full load (5x1gb crystaldiskmark runs). Top label is made of insulating material.

I got 4 of the same heatsinks and used them on my PC and laptop nvme drives, big improvements on PC since there's decent airflow, improvement on laptop was only around 8C but I'm sure these would get heatsoaked since there's no airflow to my SSDs in my laptop.

        • Are you saying to use heatsink only on one side for this SSD? What about not at all?

          • @Justin9mm: No heatsink is 74C.

Removing the top insulating label and putting on a thermal pad and heatsink dropped to 74C. The drive is one sided so top heatsink was fine. Might get some benefit with a dual sided heatsink to take heat away from the underside of the PCB but my motherboard has tight clearances so can't test it.

Leave the PS5 SSD cover off, and it should be almost the same as cover on + heatsink. There are youtube videos that show this.

  • Would you use these as cache for a NAS?

    • yes i'm interested in this question too if anyone wants to provide input

    • More details required:

Is the NAS a device (QNAP etc) or a full PC?
How many clients are accessing the NAS simultaneously?
How many drives are sitting behind the cache?

If it's $255 delivered, can I save money by picking up, as I'm nearby?

  • Good enough for steam drive right?

    • +1

      More than enough.

  • Any issue using a 2tb or 4tb for an O/S (and some games) drive?

    • No issues here. Currently used on my PC as an OS drive. I do have paging file disabled and set my drives to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity though but it works quite well when you add a heatsink

    • Interested to know this, as planning a build and have no idea about parts!

  • Is this TLC?
