  • Thanks grabbing a second!

This bricked one of my switches. Had to ask Nintendo to replace the switch altogether. I really, really wouldn't recommend this.

    • Did Nintendo say anything about not being covered by warranty? Can they tell this is caused by a 3rd party dock?

      • +1

I conveniently forgot to mention that. It was properly bricked - had lost all my data, so they just sent another one out.

        • Sorry to your data loss but at least you got a free replacement hardware.

        • Under warranty?

    • +10

Decent video on the bricking cause https://youtu.be/u6INIHrZBGg

    • Wow, thanks for the warning !!!

  • +1

Nah I shouldn't trust third party products like this.

  • +2

I used one of these 3rd party on my notebook. It burned my battery and motherboard. Luckily it happened 3 days before the notebook's warranty end.

    • +1

Wow, thanks as well for the warning.
Was it this exact model for you too?

      • Could be earlier model but would not trust no brand 3rd party

  • +3

Bought, then cancelled after bricking reports.

They can join the heymix club

  • I'm not going to play with the bricking roulette. Sometimes cheaper costs more money in the end.

  • +1

    Bought, then cancelled

    • +1

      Look the same?

      • Slightly different and has been around for a while with no reports of bricking

    • This is the exact one I bought. Amazon even tells me I purchased it back in 2021. It bricked my switch. See above comments.

      • Amazon even tells me I purchased it back in 2021. It bricked my switch.

Did you using the original charger? I am wondering was it the charger or the adapter that bricked it.

        • many including me using:
non ori dock + ori charger = FINE

          also, for me:
ori dock + non charger (smart 65w laptop charger)= FINE

          • @CyberMurning: That is why I want to know whether @diazepam use original charger or third party that bricked it.

          • @CyberMurning: can’t remember. I suspect MacBook charger though.
I’ve used the same MacBook charger mutliple times with the genuine dock without concern though.

            • +1

@diazepam: i see. hmm the thing is from what i thought, dont use both NON ori (charger and dock). if one is original it should be okay

    • +2

This is the one I bought and it’s been fine. I only use the original Nintendo charger with it though.

    • Been using this one for a year with the original nintendo charger. No problems so far. Doesn’t work with the steam deck though.

    • Bought this and been working fine, with original charger, since 2021

  • For me, I just bought the cover dick mini

  • I recommend the Skull & Co Jumpgate for a Switch dock
    https://skullnco.com/products/jumpgate?variant=3944271527943…

    Video explaining bricking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6INIHrZBGg
Disclaimer: It's a 4 year old video, so I don't know what new information is out there, but I've been using my own Jumpgate for just as long. No brick.

    • Dunno man, i had this and it was flimsy, the USB port also didn't work even though the switch dock itself is working albeit a bit loose.

I asked for replacement and they asked me to destroy and send a photo for evidence to get a full refund instead.

It doesn't seem like they trust their own QC to send a replacement

      • The destroy and replace thing seems to be a thing. I had a fractal fan I had to do the same to. Jokes on them it still worked with 5 out of the 7 fans haha. Made a sick pattern too (but it probably sucked w/ efficiency)

    • I don't know the full details, but I don't think any old USB-C to HDMI hub works with the Switch. The Switch dock is specific hardware that might need a certain configuration to dock the Switch and output to TV/USB.
It may not cause bricking, but it may not even work at all

      • Thanks, I didn't know the switch requires a special usb-c dock

        • and also special charger, if you are using some kind of dock (ie playing on external display)

          • @CyberMurning: can't use a normal laptop USB-C charger?

            • +1

@Homr: its not about 45w, or 65w or 100w but the voltage need to be specific, some charger are smart that they can output different voltages. with handheld fine but not when you are docking

              from reddit:
Not all USB-C chargers are equal. You have basic USB-C chargers, which output 5V/3A. For the Switch that’s enough to charge while you play in handheld mode, but it won’t support the dock. For other devices that’s fine for phones and tablets, but not most laptops.

You also have USB-C Power Delivery, which range in output but are higher than basic USB-C output. Here you have to look at the specific output specs to compare them. Depending on the output they can handle laptops and even larger devices.

The Switch’s included charger supports 5V/1.5A and 15V/2.6A, which is exactly what the Switch dock requires. However that is a narrow power profile, making the Switch charger a poor choice for many other devices.

Best practice is to use the Switch’s AC adapter with the dock full time, then use a more flexible charger for a second location or on the go.
If it want to dive deeper into the rabbit hole I have a write up on Switch’s power draw and how that works with USB-C power standards

    • Does it work with Switch?

  • echoing some of the poster abov:
im using cheapo (but good quality) 7in1 hub from aliexpress (it was around $20 ali price so local could be $40),
    but with original switch charger!

on the other room, i use original dock, but with smart lenovo laptop 65w charger (can output multiple volts or what i have no ideas)

this way i dont need to buy anything extra as i have the dock and the charger laying around as spare anyway

both are fine. so i think as long as one is the original it will be fine. if you use some random hub with random charger then yeah kaboom!

  • question. can switch really output 4k 60hz? does it matter to use hub that can do 4k60hz or 4k30hz? (assuming tv is 4k)

    • I think Switch not 4k, right?

      • thats what i thought but not sure.. maybe oled is 4k? and how about the hz… 60 capable?

        • max spec according to what its capable of the hub itself.

Switch will only output 1080p 60hz max, but if you plug a laptop instead it can output up to 4k 60hz.

          • @meong: yes my question is just specific for switch usage. thanks
