The 2TB platinum is $178, I think worth the extra $.

    • difference?

      • +2

        Double the read/write speeds.

I think I'd wait for another 980 or 990 Pro sale.

        • +2

980 Pro is getting a bit dated and slower than the P41 though.

      • +9

        Difference:
        PCIe 4.0 vs PCIe 3.0
        Memory: 176L vs 128L
        Sequential Read: 7,000 MB/s vs 3500 MB/s
        Sequential Write: 6,500 MB/s vs 3200 MB/s
Random Read: 1,400,000 vs 570,000 IOPS
Random Write: 1,300,000 vs 600,000 IOPS

If your motherboard supports PCIe Gen 4 x 4 then the Platinum P41 is a no brainer over the Gold P31.

      Not really..

It won't make a game load ANY faster..direct storage is still not really there yet

I have a 980 pro as OS drive..

and a 970 evo as game drive..Zero difference in load times..ZERO

even as a scratch disk it's barely a massive diffrence

  • How’s this for b450 with pcie3?

I’ve got a 512gb 970 Evo that it would be replacing.

    • +3

It's a gen 3 drive so your b450's gen 3 slot won't mind. Note that some b450 boards only have 1 NVME m.2 slot with the others being SATA m.2 slots.

You would be able to replace the evo just fine though.

A gen 4 drive would work in your system too, it, just won't run any faster than gen 3 speeds.

Thanks, I might just keep waiting anyway lol.

Would have taken 1TB pcie4 at $55 - that was crazy but I didn’t see it in time.

Me too buddy, me too 😿

The 1TB ($85) and 500GB ($52) drives seem like pretty good prices also, for TLC with DRAM.

  • I got a WD Blue SN570 2TB for like $155 for my 2015 Macbook Pro and it seems to do the job

  • Can anyone please recommend whether this one or the Platinum would work in a Thinkpad E14 Gen 2: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpade/e1… ?

The specs just say 1TB max for the M.2 2280 slot, but I think that's the max that Lenovo offers. If I were to add it manually, it should be supported right?

Also, based on the max capabilities of that Laptop, does it even make sense to go the platinum or would the gold be enough?

    • +3

IMO, go for gold for the lower power rating. You won't see a difference in the speed for platinum in real world scenarios

    • +2

gold uses less power and pumps out less heat… no point in having speed when your laptop overheats and dies

    • +4

      Get the Gold

Specs say your laptop has 2x NVMe slots, 1x 2242 (used) and 1x 2280 (empty)

Since the battery is already a smallish 45Whr, power consumption is even more important if you run dual drives

    • +2

The SK Hynix Gold P31 is widely considered one of the finest laptop SSDs available - because it's not only fast, but it's extremely power-efficient. That means it produces little waste heat, and allows your laptop to stretch its legs in terms of battery life too

Its at number 1 in the world for power usage.. beating every other Gen3, Gen4 and Gen5 drive on the market.

      • Thanks everyone. Appreciate the inputs!

  • Any suggestions for enclosures? Hoping to use this as an external drive for a 13” M1 2020 MBP (Thunderbolt 3). TIA

  • Damm this was actually a good deal for 2TB
