  • Not bad - hoping amazon do another $59 with bonus gc again

  • Good deal just bought it full price with cashback on the weekend for $99 from BigW, will ask for change of mind now and get the TV cube instead, the storage in the stick is too small if you cache some a pretty heavy movie it runs out of space quickly.

    • Yes, but, you can use an OTG Cable to plug in a USB Drive - instantly solves your storage issues. TechDoctorUK has a how to video on Youtube.

  • Thanks OP, just grabbed one!

If anyone is a JB Perks member, check your emails. I got an email from JB the other day "Perk Alert - Spend $50 get $10* off!", expires today. Perfect timing…

    • thanks for reminding us about JB perks :)

    • May I know when did you receive that email? I've been a Perks member since the beginning but I couldn't find the voucher…Thanks

      • 9th August.

      • Today's the last day to use it as well

  • if i have smart tv do i need fire stick?

    • Depends.. if you have a budget TV.. or something like Hisense (which I have) it definitely makes sense.. because even if your TV has an OS built in, it will be slow or laggy, and video processing capabilities will be inferior.. Hisense has Vidaa OS in Australia which is pretty much shit..
Note that this is only for budget TVs.. if you have a high end model from Sony, LG or Samsung.. you don't need this

    • depends on the TV you have and what you plan on doing with the firestick. I have sideloaded my firestick with smarttube for ad free youtube and a few more apps.

    • Every smart TV I have seen has trouble with something. It is never perfect and usually it is easier to make the TV "dumb" again and simply play everything from a purpose-built device like AppleTV, FireTV stick, DIY HTPC etc etc…

e.g. I keep my TV offline as samsung loves to display ads everywhere. I intentionally didn't give them consent with TC during setup so I am locked out of most smart features. But thats fine because all I need is to switch between HDMI ports and TV tuner.

  • Is the CUBE worth the extra?

    • +1

No, imo, Cube isn't worth the extra $90. I have both, but got the Cube for $109 on Prime Day.

    • +1

My Cube keeps stuffing up, movies keep cutting out and returning me to the menu, youtube keeps stopping and Alexa won't listen to my commands, doesn't want to update either and won't read a 2tb HD, :( - returning through Amazon's seamless process

      YMMV

      • +1

How's the wifi connection in that area? That'd be my first place to check for those symptoms

    • +1

you can also see the comparison table here but imho don't see it worth extra…

  • They are pretty good, I like the remote it works well

  • This or chromecast ?

  • Anyone had negative issues jail breaking these ? thanks

    • Didnt need to jailbreak, just followed some web guides on how to load apps indirectly.

    • are you referring to unlocking the bootloader and gaining root access or just about sideloading 3rd party apps? If it is the latter then it is pretty straight forward and shouldn't have any issues unless you load up the stick with lot of apps and run out of ram.

  • My Logitech K380 keyboard doesn't work with Chromecast with Google TV 4k, hopefully it works with this one!

  • Bought two in a recent deal. Ive found it to be a terrible gadget. The remote often doesnt recognise commands then registers 10 clicks at once. The remote doesnt control my TV volume at all. I returned the 2nd one for refund. Only saving grace is a previous poster said about sideloading TeaTV (full of streamed pirate tv series) and the SmartTube (youtube with no ads). Wouldnt buy again.

Edit: oh and the voice function is crap too.

As for the free apk’s, Stremio is best.

For the paid, Weyd and Syncler.

      • Will check them out, thanks :)

  • Thanks OP! Judt bought one with the JB perks for $49 😎
My friend has the firestick non 4K version and works well for her.

Anyone got recommendations on applications similar to Kodi for streaming TV shows, live sports and movies?

    • +2

For sport, it doesn’t get better than Kodi add-ons: https://troypoint.com/kodi-sports-addons/

As for TV Series and Movies, Stremio which is an apk. The GUI is much cleaner than Kodi.

      • +1

Do note that streamio uses bittorrent protocol to stream so a VPN is recommended.

        • +1

It has Real Debrid integration so a VPN is only recommended if you don't have Real Debrid.

          • @[Deactivated]: ah right. But it is worth calling out since not everyone will even be aware that streamio actually uses torrents.

          • @[Deactivated]: thanks for the recommendation, I'm moving from a mibox where I used Kodi 16 Leia for many yrs onto the firestick. So you'll need to excuse my lack of up to date knowledge lol - so you recommend Stremio for TV and movies - using real debrid: does this require any subscription of some sort or is it a free service?

Are there any TV and movies add-ons you can recommend for Kodi (in addition to troypoint for Sports)?

            Thanks in advance mate

        • @nokia3660 Recommend any good cheap VPNs? TIA mate

          • @Xcwizit: sorry mate, I don't use VPN for streaming. Got VPN Unlimited (18 months free subscription from one of the deals) for torrent downloads

  • Firestick UI sucks. It was designed by someone who didn’t give a (profanity) about the people who use it.

  • I have a 1080p would the firestick be a good choice or chromecast 4k or chromecast hd?
The hd is selling for 56 while 4k is on sale for 64

  • was peeved because my local jb did not have stock, so price match with o'works, they have it for $55,
got if for $53 - perks + del just under $49.00 delivered.
I have had the hd for quite awhile and absolutely love it, beats all my other boxes hands down.

  • Anyone use kodi on this? Had a fireTV lite, and it was quite sluggish. Last fireTV randomly stopped working which has put ME off getting another one but they are great devices. Main thing that puts Me off is Amazon blocks any tinkering with this. I don't know if there is an alternative to FireTV
