What's a Good Liquid Weed Kill for Buffalo Grass, and What's The Best Snail Bait (Non-Toxic) ?

We're trying to tame the weeds & pests before they completely take over. I've tried a few weed & feed but so far it's not really working.
And this years snail population is out of control to the point I've decided I have to use a snail bait but don't want to risk the wildlife or our cat so looking for an organic treatment.

Can you recommend a tried & true brand? Probably from Bunnings?

Thanks everyone!

  • I've used bow and arrow, seems to work pretty well.

    • Check out Robin Hood over here doing non-toxic snail control with a bow. I was a pretty good bow hunter but you’ve got some real talent…

      I’ll show myself out.

I tried to post a link to a tiny compound bow on AliExpress but it didn't let me ☹️

  • used coffee grinds, sprinkle on edges of garden, repels snails,
and funnily enough strong coffee, piping hot, poured over the grass will kill it, but needs repeat doses to work

    • Boil a kettle and pour it on for environmentally friendly weed killer.

Why spend money on a kettle, when you can simply boil water in a saucepan?

My FiL swears by Yates 4L Weed 'n' Feed Hose On Lawn Weed Killer even though it says it's not suitable for use on Buffalo lawns, he's used it on his Buffalo lawn since forever & it's always looked great.

    • So it doesn't kill Buffalo grass? I think this is the thick grass that taking over my yard.

I've used Amgrow Bin-Die for weeds on buffalo and it works great.

    • We have used that, but doesn't kill a lot of the rest. Might have to do a double w/ a couple of different ones.

  • Bow and Arrow. Buffalo safe. Slow acting but kills off the weeds completely. Some herbicides seem to work very quickly but actually only kill off the green bits so the weeds just regrow from the roots / stem.
For snails, Iron EDTA pellets. More environmentally responsible, pet safe, and doubles as iron fertiliser. Avoid the cheapie aldehyde based ones.

  • Stale beer works well for snails put some in a small container around the garden.

  • Right now is weed season, buffalo season isn’t for another month or two.

Pull out some of the east weeds by hand, weed and feed (buffalo safe) for the rest. Keep it healthy over the summer.

  • Our issue is that we live across from a park that's basically trees and weeds. The prevailing wind keeps a constant supply of new weeds going— the park is pretty, but the upkeep due to it is a nightmare.

Why do some weed killers say they're only good for certain grass when it's not true (according to kajke)? In the case of those Bunning's links, for buffalo, it's listed on the front what weeds it kills, yet the other type doesn't list weeds killed on the front, just the grass type it's for. Both Yates, too. I'm confused— are they saying that certain weeds only grow in certain grass? I can tell you right now that ours has all kinds of weeds in it.

The snails are out of control. I'd need mega-litres of beer. Has anyone here used https://www.bunnings.com.au/eco-organic-garden-600g-eco-shie… or anything like this that really works?

    Cheers

    • I have used the pet safe Multiguard with dogs and cats, I just hid the pellets to be extra safe.
It worked when I had an infestation although it use to say dog/cat friendly on it. A Google image search shows it a different box with a picture of a dog and cat on it.

    • First of all weed & feed is a waste of money. They don't really work. Weed kill & feeding the lawn is better done separately. Also, depends on the weeds you have. Weeds like Oxalis & Bindi usually need a more specialised weed kill.
Having said that, the best method is to 1st remove all of the weeds you can by hand (doesn't work for Oxalis, needs poison). If you don't want to do that, then use a specialised weed kill such as this one https://lilydaleinstantlawn.com.au/lawn-care-shop/all-purpos… or whatever the Bunnings version is.
Then, you need to use a weed suppressant, such as this one: https://lilydaleinstantlawn.com.au/lawn-care-shop/oxafert-pr…, which has the added bonus of being a fertiliser as well. With Buffalo, the thicker & healthier it is the better, as it will keep the weeds out itself. So fertiliser is very important. But this pre-emergent (or Bunnings equivalent) will both supress weeds & fertilise the lawn. This does not kill existing weeds, but will prevent future weeds very effectively. I am not affiliated with the Lilydale brand but used to sell their products so I know what they do. You can buy Oxafert in many different online stores. Oxafert was a very popular product.

Snails: they love spots to hide/breed during the day. Under rocks, logs, containers. If you can, go regularly through those spots in your yard & get rid of them. Or try to remove the hiding places (unless you like the aesthetics). If you're into all things organic, get chickens & let them roam. They'll destroy all the snails. Chickens are also quite messy though. Lastly, what someone said above about coffee grounds is 100% correct. Sprinkle a think layer around the affected areas and it'll keep snails away. However, a lot of plants don't like coffee grounds, so I'd google the plants 1st to check if it's ok. Egg shells do a similar job but they're not as effective. Beer doesn't work very well.

I have a friend who put a snail 'electric fence' around his wooden veggie beds. Nailed a line of galvanised wire into the wood in a circuit, attached it to a small battery he bought from Jaycar that he put into a waterproof container. The voltage is very low so not harmful to anything larger than a snail & it works a treat.

  • Have been using snail bait from bunnings for years, have now old healthy cats, and possums at plague levels with sadly no possum casualties, their not interested in it, but have slaughtered a lot of snails.
