      Words are made so that people understand what you're talking about. In Australia, soccer is also a better word than football, because many sports call themselves football whereas only one call themselves soccer.

      For the record, I'm originally from England so I typically call it football but I don't go around correcting Aussies who call it soccer, especially if they're new to watching the sport - I encourage them because I am passionate about the sport itself, not what people call it.
