Definitely Hynix, probably A-die 24Gbit M die which performs similarly to 16 Gbit A die, second best option to downloading more ram

    96 RAM

    can it do excel?

    • +5

Yes but max of 2 sheets at a time.

    • +1

Not only it will do Excel but also Excel with Python builtin

    • Yes, but it can't do chrome yet

  • +1

Funny how we have the same ram as hard drive space was many years ago

    • +7

More ram than my ipad storage

    • +2

We used to make ram-disks, but now what, cache-ram?

      • Windows at least has a thing called superfetch that automatically uses extra ram to cache files so that programs launch faster etc.

        • +1

Superfetch has become obsolete with nvme ssds though.

          • @Agret: Probably. At the very least it helps justify the extra money I spent on RAM :/

      • Once upon a time I had an ISA Tekram Cache Controller with 32Mb of RAM. Whatever game we were playing that day got loaded into the controller and loading times were reduced to nearly zero.

If you have enough RAM and can tolerate the additional read/write cycles on your SSD, Windows 10 still allows you to create a RAMDrive.
Not sure how long it would take to copy a 25-60Gb game from the Solid State drive to a RAMDrive though.

        • Creating a RAM drive does not have any impact on how many writes are done to your SSD. It may slightly increase the reads from your SSD due to less ram used as read cache, but reads do not impact the longevity of the SSD anyway.

          • +1

@AwesomeAndrew: The RAM drive needs to be written to your disk on a regular basis or anything stored on it will be lost when you shutdown.

            • @Agret: But that wouldn't result in more writes, it should be the same amount or less if your software is decent, as it would only write the changed portion to the SSD.

        • I ran a couple of ram disks for many years, especially when I got my first SSD. I modded Firefox to save its Web page caches to the ram disk. Also for a number of other things, like as the temp folder when extracting loads of files from zip or rar files. All my FTP log files and other less important things that were chatty with high disk I/O.

It backed up the whole contents of the ram drive every X minutes, or when you shut down. Never had corruption or issues.

        • At 10,000mbps on PCIE5 nvme it wouldnbe around 3 seconds

    • Make a Ramdisk :)

    • ahhhh my first PC hard drive was 400mb.. so yeah slightly more

  • +11

Might need to run emm386 for this one?

    • +13

      DOS=HIGH,UMB

      • +5

oh wow, the old upper memory block, used to spend hours fiddling with the batch files to get all the right drivers loaded while leaving enough for games.

    • +2

Memmaker will sort it out if you cbf with edit.com

    • I thought we only need 640 KB ?

  • +1

Man i was going to download some ram tonight, but maybe ill lash out instead

  • Recommended minimum for cities skylines 2?

The first one was pushing 32gb with the dlc all on without moda to reduce usage. Go a bit crazy with assets and 64 isnt out of the question.

    • But much better optimisation at least that's what I've heard

    • +1

Paradox says minimum is 8GB, recommended is 16GB for CS2

but yeh, to your point, 32GB is really the minimum for a decent sized city (ie 200k pop+)

  • Will this cope up playing both cocomelon and barbie for my two kids.

    lol garbage a-dies

    • +2

Hynix A die is the best DDR5 die atm

  • +3

For those wondering, this guy was able to run 96GB DDR5 6400MHz CL32 on the Asrock X670E Steel Legend and 7950X3D without any issues. Different brand though but I suspect they are the same dies.

  • Nice, just got my CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 2x32Gb , 6400mhz cl32 but still trying to get it to operate at 6400mhz (currently sitting at 4800)

    • How are they advertising these as 6400mhz if they don't run at that freq out of the box?

      • +1

Because, like everything, they need to be installed and configured correctly.

        • Shouldn't the system pick up the timings from the chip though?

      • +2

it has to do with cpu's memory controller (and the motherboard) and the fact that dual rank ddr5 is harder to run. the sticks are probably fine

      • Like @2024 said needs to be configured. I could see in mobo setting that it was detected as a 6400mhz stick but was at 4800mhz so wasn't too fussed. When I enabled XMP system didn't start so had to turn it off, set up the windows and then install MSI centre for mobo, then back at mobo setting enable XMP and all good now. CPU-Z shows 2400mhz (I am not PC guru but from memory in dual channel it shows half meaning 4800mhz) and has XMP profile showing 3200mhz meaning 6400mhz, other pros can correct me if I am wrong.

  • +3

this is "24Gbit Hynix M Die" in "dual rank" configuration

Which is different to the "16Gbit Hynix M Die", ladder being the first generation DDR5 chip at 2GB per chip size. Former being the 3rd DDR5 revision Hynix made, and first generation of 3GB per chip size.

  • +1

Finally, I can open ten tabs in Chrome with no lag.

  • +2

My mind boggles at these unfathomable numbers.

  • For those who miss triple-channel RAM configs.

    • ha, i had one, i couldn't get it to go with my ram, I had to run my three 4gb sticks in A1 B1 C2 to post so it would have been running in single channel :_(

  • Can someone help me - can my 13" netbook support it?

    • +1

Yep, recommend you buy 2 pairs though

    • +2

if they don't fit internally, then use external enclosures for these

      • +2

I've been liking my Bluetooth RAM enclosures, that way I can also use them with my phone as needed.

    • No you need a 13.1”

  • Seriously though, what can you practically do with so much RAM?

    • +9

      Virtualisation

    • +1

I have 64GB RAM and have a Sim Rig for car racing

    • +3

      AfterEffects and things like that
Workloads that them creatives generate always want more rams

    • +1

Open 10 tabs in Chrome, or maybe an even higher number that our primitive low-RAM minds can't conceive of yet.

    • +5

Run Large Language Models (similar to ChatGPT), on your own computer. Lets you bypass the censorship of the publicly available ones. A model such as LLAMA-65B needs at least 128GB of ram to run, although there are smaller models available that can run on 8GB.

      • Censorship… you mean decency filters?

        • +2

          Decency filters… you mean censorship?

    • +3

I've got 64gb, and use it for virtual machines. Usually 3 guest machines with 16gb each.

    • +2

      My reasons:
Very large image processing in JP2 image format.
      Working with 3D tomography datasets.
      Running virtual machines.
Keeping open a frankly ridiculous amount of Firefox tabs.

      • Why do you use Firefox?

        • I know it's not perfect, but I've been using it a long time, I feel like it is a bit less memory hungry than Chrome (which I feel is important with ram being so expensive on Macs), and I feel like I have a really good workflow for syncing across both mobile and desktop, as well as a collection of various extensions that serve my needs well. I also really don't like that Chrome has a monopoly (and now they are starting to wield it…). I am a bit sad though to see how much Mozilla has neglected to give Firefox the kind of polish and attention it deserves.

      I have 96GB of RAM combined with a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900KF 3.00 GHz Processor. I can run:

      • Slack
      • Currently have 110 Google Chrome tabs Open (with a heap of add-ons enabled)
      • Visual Studio Code (with multiple tabs)
      • WinSCP
      • Putty
      • SnagIT (Screen Capture tool)
      • Plus other apps that might run in the background like ClipBoard Fusion, Core Temp and Google Meet meetings with Camera + Audio, no problem.

All of the above is running no problem, the occasional Adobe Product (XD or Photoshop) or MS Office window, but the above pretty much runs all the time. As I write this post, it is telling me only 24% of the RAM is being used (23GB).

      • 110 tabs open…

        • I know right, amateur! I have 220 tabs open.

        • At the moment, yes. Usually isn't this high.

    • Calculations, i.e. engineering/scientific etc

    • Who knows, Windows memory management is hard to understand. I have 64GB ram in my PC and I created a 120GB pagefile on my SSD so in theory I have 184GB of addressable memory for Windows. In practice maybe not so? Task manager shows my physical ram usage at around 42gb of 64gb and I'll still get Edge & Chrome tabs crashing for the reason of ERR_OUT_OF_MEMORY. It's a mystery to me. I wonder if 96GB ram would even help. Too bad my system isn't DDR5.

    • I'm at ~90% RAM usage on two servers with 512GB of RAM right now.

  • Anyone have a deal on 96GB EWE?

  • I got below from previous deal. can I get this and run it together with that in remaining two slots in MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI with a 13900K ? I think 89 GBPS memory bandwidth of memory controller with DDR5 doesn't work well.

    G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 64GB (2x32GB) 6400MHz CL32 DDR5 RAM (Hynix A-die) $299 Delivered ($0 SYD C&C) @ JW Computers

    • I don't recommend doing this. 64GB + 96GB is 160GB, which exceeds the 128GB maximum memory size that the 13900K can currently accept, unless you want to hold out for a potential BIOS refresh. Filling all 4 slots means that you'll also be accepting a lower clock speed for stability reasons (potentially the base clock of <5000MHZ, which is a bit of a waste given the 6400MHZ RAM that you've purchased), and even then I think it's quite possible that you'd run into further stability issues. Your money is probably better spent elsewhere

  • Why is it showing up at $560 for me. What's wrong with my Amazon?! Any idea?

    • it seems you need prime subscription to see this price from amazon us via au

      • You're spot on. Need Prime

  • This is only 96GB of RAM, but you should be able to fit two of these sets into a modern motherboard giving you a total of 192GB of RAM.

    • Both Intel 13th gen and AMD 7th gen have maximum supported ram of 128gb

  • Will this support 150 chrome tabs? ;)

  • amazon showa below message for my order and item is at Mascot NSW, anyone got it?

Your package is being processed by Customs officials. Amazon AU Exports may require additional information from you.

    • It's out for delivery for me today. 3 days earlier than expected.

But I'm returning it, or sell it on classified here. Decided to go with an all white build so I'll purchase some white RAM.

      • I received mine yesterday, expected on 10th. My case is a Fractal Torrent compact solid black, so can't see inside anyway :D
