Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church (audiobook) | Logos Bible Software (Was US$15) [audiobook]
by Paul Washer - Publisher: One Audiobooks, 2021

https://www.logos.com/product/198125/ten-indictments-against…
Paul Washer is an evangelist and teacher that was a missionary in Peru for ten years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. Paul now serves as one of the laborers with the HeartCry Missionary Society.
Overview: The modern church is in need revival. But as author Paul Washer contends, “we cannot simply do what is right in our own eyes and then expect the Holy Spirit to come down and bless our labors.” Truth be told, the devil has little need to oppose the church’s prayer for revival unless God’s people are seeking to live lives and order congregations according to God’s Word. This book examines ten areas where churches have neglected clear biblical direction and need to prayerfully seek reformation.

Gregory of Nazianzus: Three Poems | Logos Bible Software (Was US$16) [eBook]
by Gregory of Nazianzus - Publisher: Catholic University of America, 1987

https://www.logos.com/product/53629/gregory-of-nazianzus-thr…
Gregory of Nazianzus (c. 329 – January 25 389 or 390) (also known as Gregory the Theologian or Gregory Nazianzen) was a 4th-century Archbishop of Constantinople. He is widely considered the most accomplished rhetorical stylist of the patristic age. As a classically trained speaker and philosopher he infused Hellenism into the early church, establishing the paradigm of Byzantine theologians and church officials.
Overview: Raised in a multi-generational Christian family, Gregory of Nazianzus was also well-educated, well-traveled, and tutored in almost every discipline of the Greek arts, philosophies, sciences, and literatures. Among his studies must have included Homer, Hesiod, Apollonius of Rhodes, Thucydides, Plutarch, Herodotus, Lucian, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle—the list goes on. The numerous poems written by Gregory had a profound influence over Byzantine hymnology, although, beyond that, they largely provide a treasure trove of autobiographical and historical data. The poem Concerning His Own Life is the earliest known Christian autobiography, and probably had a direct influence on Augustine’s Confessions.

El Reino de Dios: El Bien Supremo | Logos Bible Software (Spanish) (Was US$13) [eBook]
by Herman Bavinck - Publisher: Monte Alto Editorial, 2021

https://www.logos.com/product/241241/el-reino-de-dios-el-bie…
Herman Bavinck (1854–1921), was a Dutch Reformed theologian who contributed to the resurgence of Reformed theology. Bavinck studied at Kampen Theological Seminary and the University of Leiden and graduated in 1880. He taught at both Kampen Theological Seminary and Free University and was a contemporary of Abraham Kuyper and B. B. Warfield, both of whom he knew well.

I highly recommend the Bible in a Year podcast with Fr Mike Schmitz. You can listen from any podcast player but I find the Ascension App to be much easier to track it with.

The benefit of this program is that you are provided with so much context that you just don’t get from the Bible alone. So much of the meaning just goes over your head until someone joins the dots for you, especially when we don’t have cultural context. It also follows a nice reading plan which avoids getting bogged down in ‘dry’ patches.

      • +5

I highly recommend Christopher Hitchens” God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything”

        • +1

That would require an open mind and using both eyes.

            @Protractor: works both ways

            • -3

@morediscount: No it doesn't Religion (esp Christaianty) has immunity to bigotry by way of its (constitutionally) unlawful influence on govt policies and laws.
eg, If Jesus was right about treatment of others, then Christians wouldn't have a problem with non binary people.
The Bible is the greatest cherry orchard in the cosmos, with no shortage of specialist pickers.

              • +6

@Protractor: your comment is also cherry picked… I can argue other groups have far more immunity today than anyone else ….
But my statement was in reply to your comment about being open minded..

                • -7

@morediscount: Everything I said stands. One eg, ACL represents nobody but right wing Christian bigots.Fact.
And yet,hey have the ear of our federal govts and drive divisive protective policies that allow them escape clauses and direct forays into places others can't go.
Why is free speech defined by groups that use hate speech more than others?

              • +7

@Protractor: Funny. You don't sound very open minded. :)

          • +4

@Protractor: How hypocritical. As a non religious person I want to read the bible so I can keep an open mind.

          • +2

@Protractor: lol first time I've heard anyone use the term "open mind" in reference to Christopher Hitchens

            • +1

@SlickMick: Yeah I know,! right? But then, they call the christian god a 'loving father', 'lovim god'.( H-hhm.)

America, the most christianised experiment in the cosmos. How's that all going?

        • +2

Hitchens was my favourite of the prominent antitheists, was a very gifted writer and could make a convincing case, especially in isolation. In a debate with a notable opponent though, like John Lennox and William Lane Craig, he was found wanting, I still think he was on the whole, far better than Dawkins and Harris though.

        • +1

          This book is very flawed.
Firstly, Hitchens opts for a rhetorical blunderbuss, firing indiscriminately at all religious practices. In doing so, he overlooks the intricate ways in which faith has enriched human history—be it through art, morality, or social cohesion. This broad-brush approach fails to capture the nuanced reality of religion's impact on civilization.

Secondly, the book relies on anecdotal assaults rather than empirical analysis. While entertaining, the narrative lacks the rigorous scaffolding of data or academic research. This approach reduces the book's arguments to mere diatribes, limiting their intellectual weight.

Hitchens sidesteps engaging with the intellectual heft of theological traditions. The absence of dialogue with seminal thinkers like St. Thomas Aquinas or contemporary scholars such as William Lane Craig renders his critique somewhat superficial. This lack of engagement misses an opportunity to elevate his arguments to a more scholarly discourse.

Furthermore, the book cherry-picks incidents of religious misconduct while conveniently ignoring secular atrocities. This selective approach creates an unfair moral backdrop against which he paints his arguments, thus weakening his ethical stance.

Lastly, the caustic tone Hitchens employs is a double-edged sword. While it effectively slices through religious pretensions, it also alienates potential readers who might otherwise be open to a well-reasoned critique. This style of argumentation could be perceived as sanctimonious, ironically replicating the dogmatic certitude he seeks to dismantle.

"God Is Not Great" is more a theatrical spectacle than a methodologically rigorous critique. The book’s pyrotechnics—its wit and wordplay—distract from its lack of substantive, balanced argumentation. While the prose is audacious and entertaining, the book fails to deeply persuade or contribute meaningfully to the discourse on religion's role in society. It preaches to the choir but is unlikely to convert the undecided or the faithful.

          • @KingPhil: Sounds like a Marvel movie. All dazzle, no show.

        • +5

Hitchens when asked why he named his book on Mother Theresa the somewhat offensive "The Missionary Position".

@dwarves: how's that fedora going mate?

          • @dwarves:

Doctor removes someone's tumour and saves them from cancer

Religious nuts: "Thank god, you survived because of him"

Floods, earthquakes, pedophiles, murders ruining countless lives

Religious nuts: " 'Twas the devil I tell you" / "It is god's plan, we must not question his ways"

There's normal people who practice religion in silence without being screwballs shoving their crazy in other people's faces and standing on soapboxes shaming people for not being like them, but these seem to be in the minority.

            • +5

@[Deactivated]: The Bible praises and emphasises the importance of Doctors. You sound bigoted when you go out of your way to find and insult Christianity and then turn around and complain about religious people “shoving their crazy in other people’s faces” and “shaming people for not being like them” which is precisely what you’re doing here.

Here’s a nice few verses about honouring doctors.

“Honor the physician with the honor due him, according to your need of him, for the Lord created him; for healing comes from the Most High, and he will receive a gift from the king. The skill of the physician lifts up his head, and in the presence of great men he is admired. The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible man will not despise them. Was not water made sweet with a tree in order that his power might be known? And he gave skill to men that he might be glorified in his marvelous works. By them he heals and takes away pain; the pharmacist makes of them a compound. His works will never be finished; and from him health is upon the face of the earth. My son, when you are sick do not be negligent, but pray to the Lord, and he will heal you. Give up your faults and direct your hands aright, and cleanse your heart from all sin. Offer a sweet-smelling sacrifice, and a memorial portion of fine flour, and pour oil on your offering, as much as you can afford. And give the physician his place, for the Lord created him; let him not leave you, for there is need of him. There is a time when success lies in the hands of physicians, for they too will pray to the Lord that he should grant them success in diagnosis and in healing, for the sake of preserving life. He who sins before his Maker, may he fall into the care of a physician.”

              • -3

@CommuterPolluter: Dude, stfu. The amount of doctors that have told me this is the first thing religious nuts wail at their family members the first thing after a successful surgery without even acknowledging medical staff. Experiences like these are also well documented online. The bible says a LOT of thigns that you people don't follow and cherry pick to quote when it's convenient, so gtfo with that stupid argument. Also christians talking about being 'bigoted' … oh the irony. I grew up surrounded by this environment, non-bigoted christians are in the minority. You are a perfect example of one, hypocrite. There is a reason most rational well educated people have deep seeded hatred for you folk.

                • @[Deactivated]: could you be any saltier. you saw the post was about Christian material, obviously of zero interest to you but you decided to come and shove your beliefs down everyones throat. Get a job :D

                  • +2

@kamelataturd: Very 'christian-like' response. You seem more salty about your religion being rightfully scrutinised with people leaving in droves. Maybe tell your priests to get real jobs like the rest of us and stop touching altar boys?

@[Deactivated]: Atheists can molest little boys too.

@amoretpax199: And yet priests are protected and shuffled between churches when they're caught. Nice whataboutism btw. Wow, typical christian refusing to acknowledge victims and using them as meat shields for their goofy arguments to protect their statistically dying religion.

                        • @[Deactivated]: It's the truth though and it works both way. You are just ignorant on that fact.

                          • +2

@amoretpax199: no no. One is protected, the other is just an average citizen that usually goes on a list, cannot get a job and is arrested IMMEDIATELY when they are caught. If it went both ways we'd lock these priests up for life instead of sending them to a new church. You simply cannot accept reality and are making excuses for pedophiles. No wonder the amount of christians are dropping by nearly a million year after year in this country. Keep carrying yourself like this, you're helping the decline with this public display.

                            • @[Deactivated]: Who makes excuse for pedo? You do know there are Atheist in high power that abuse kids and get away with it too right? Also, stop editting your comment to makes it about something else by the way when I clearly was talking about something else.

                              • @amoretpax199: whataboutism to protect pedophiles again? what is it with christians and protecting pedos? Read a few book other than just the bible, you can barely form a coherent argument, lol.

@[Deactivated]: Well I guess it’s unfortunate for those doctors that they didn’t get a thank you from the family. However, I can’t impeach the family for that either. I have spent a lot of time in oncology wards with my immediate family and it’s very distressing.

It seems like your family has failed you in some way and left you with a grudge against Christianity. I’m sorry if that is your situation but going out of your way to insult and belittle Christians isn’t going to do anything to help. If you get a rise out of somebody by insulting them it doesn't prove anything it just makes this forum a shittier place.

                  • +2

@CommuterPolluter: Its funny how you people only focus on insults in this thread and dodge the child abuse cases people keep bringing up(aside from the laundry list of other abuse). But hey, focusing on low hanging fruit is easier right?. News flash, a good chunk of the country hates you people and you are no longer the majority with that number falling by 1 million year on year.

@[Deactivated]: What exactly do you expect me to say about CSA? That because George Ridsdale was a predator Christianity isn’t true? My maths teacher just got charged (again) for touching up children. Should I tell my daughter that algebra is a lie?

What has happened in the past is a tragedy. The failures to address it at the time were additional tragedies. It happened in many other spheres of life, including schools, but it’s particularly egregious that it should happen in a church.

Even so the scapegoating of other people, as we saw in the sham trial of George Cardinal Pell, does nothing to heal the pain or address the injustices of the past. People can call into question whether he did or do not do enough to stop it. The Royal Commission found that he didn’t (albeit on the uncorroborated testimony of 1 person out of 3 surviving witnesses) but it doesn’t excuse VicPol trumping up charges against him without any serious evidence.

The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible man will not despise them.

                Does the medicine include vaccines?

                • -1

@Ughhh: Sure, why not? The only explicitly Christian argument against vaccinations is where they have needlessly made use of material derived from aborted people. Christians are exhorted to abstain from such products to because it is cooperating with evil. In general this also incentivises the medical industry to use the alternative methods which are available and to develop more alternative methods, just as there has been a recent explosion of vegan and halal options in the west.

Personally I was against myself taking the C19 vaccines because at that time there was no evidence that me taking it would benefit anybody based on my demographics. Unfortunately I had to choose between food on the table and my cares for my health when the Govt made it mandatory. I felt pretty dumb when I was getting chest pains for a couple months after the jab but cardiologist scanned my heart and it was OK so all g I guess.

@[Deactivated]: I have seen statistics indicating that the prevalence is no higher than that among the general public or within other professions. Additionally, steps are being taken to address these issues. However, as you can observe in the videos I've shared, it seems that certain ideologies are promoting inappropriate behaviour towards children.

And I condemn anyone who is a pedophile, whether they identify as Christian or non-Christian.

@[Deactivated]: Is it permissible for me to post a video about the protected minority wanting to dance half-naked in front of children, or would that also be considered spam? It seems that consistently targeting a particular group is deemed acceptable. However, when I do the same against the protected minority group, it's classified as spam.

@gto21: I am not part of said minority, not sure why you're sending me videos of them like I care. Not every non-religious person is automatically gay or part of said community. As eccentric as they are, atleast large numbers of these individuals don't take kids into the back rooms of churches, literally molest them and are then hidden/protected/prayed for when they're caught and members of their community don't lie to protect them. Work on your debating skills man. You can't refute real documented crimes with fear mongering hyperboles. Actually no, carry on. You're just digging your religion's own grave with this comedic public display.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Of course, you don't care, it's evident that you aren't genuinely concerned, as your focus isn't on the issue of child predators. Instead, it seems to be about singling out a specific group while overlooking similar actions from others.

                      • @gto21: Look man, I can't debate you if your reading skills are this poor and if that is what you gathered from my previous posts. I meant I don't care about people dancing around in weird outfits on the street. Show me evidence of where even a SINGLE one of these individuals molested a kid, was hidden off by members of their community or had people make excuses for them like you are with priests. You said it your self. The child molestation issue in your community was so bad that people had to SPECIFICALLY put in steps to stop it. When these individuals are caught, they are in the minority and are usually immediately condemned by the wider community(In fact, many of them grew up in christian households and are victims of abuse themselves). Conversely, look at this thread and how many christians are making excuses. There are people who genuinely pray for convicted sex offenders in the church thinking it's some sort of smear campaign against christianity and just false accusations.

The two are in no way 'similar' and there is nothing to 'overlook'. Try harder. You used them as an example assuming I am part of their community, hoping to upset me. You aren't as subtle as you think you are old timer. Anyway this thread is stale and you are boring. Going back to eneloop deals, not like I was expecting to debate the brightest of minds on a bargain website on an ad about christian literature anyway. You can continue talking to yourself and making excuses for pedos here alone. On a side not, I've learnt you can mute individuals on this site, so thanks for that.

                  • @gto21: I was unaware parents were being forced at gunpoint for these activities to occur with their offspring?

@dwarves: What are you a commie? There are both beauty and ugliness in this world. You can't just have only one. There is no light without darkness and vice versa. People will be good or horrible with or without God or religion. It's their choice. Just look at Bob Maguire and George Pell.

@dwarves: If there is a God, He might be bigger than we can comprehend and not fit neatly into our little boxes.

Two seemingly contradictory statements can co-exist. For a simplistic example take a circle and a triangle, these are different shapes, seemingly incompatible, however they could be different views of a cone, one from the side one from the base. Now if considering an infinite God who made time and space, I'd suggest it's not unimaginable that he may exceed our comprehension and we can only understand what has been revealed to us, even if we don't understand how it fits together.
The bible basically says that God is good and sovereign, but made us and gave us free will, we reject him and cause all the problems (this is known as the fall). God offers to fix the problem through the redeeming sacrifice of Jesus as a substitute, taking our punishment we deserve, we just have to accept and trust Him on His terms. This has shaped the whole of western civilisation and thought. It's not a dick move, it's the actions of a loving God. We can choose to reject or accept his offer of salvation.

@dwarves: OK so because God allows you to engage in all kinds of grubby behaviour the results are somehow his fault? I guess we've got another 'yes' voter on our hands. Or were you arguing that God should jump in and stop you before you get the chance to do that kind of stuff? Both options are pretty strange IMO.

          • @dwarves: why not? You could be (and are) wrong 2 for 2

        • +2

Absolutely, not god's fault or Jesus'.
But many (I'll say most) of the modern churches aren't run by Christians (i.e Christ like). Money & institutional reputation are their gods, not the teaching of Jesus. The 3 volumes I linked to are quite evident of that. Along with judgement of and campaigns against minorities, marginalised and those whose opinions they disagree with. All the antithesis of what Jesus taught.
