You can get the next model up with wireless connection from NoFrills eBay for $469.92 ($458.87 eBay Plus) with code AUGG15/AUGG17

    • with wireless

What is the advantage of wireless over the usb connection?

Your phone should automatically connect when the key is in the ignition, without having to plug in your device.

        • Your phone should automatically connect

But that will drain the phone's battery more than the usb connection, right?
What about maps navigation, do I must connect with the phone or does the stereo have its own gps antenna?

            @billadm:

But that will drain the phone's battery more than the usb connection, right?

That's correct, as it's connecting via Bluetooth. It's more of a convenience thing.

Depends if your phone supports Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. If so, it would just cast your phone to the Head Unit Display (with the option for Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze)

@billadm: The USB connection is meant to charge as well as carry data. (If the USB connection drains at all, then it's probably not feeding enough amps to your phone).

Wireless is for those people that have a charging pad where you put your phone onto it and forget about it, or for people who have a magnetic (e.g. magsafe) connection that charges. That way your phone is being charged, and also connects wirelessly for Apple Carplay / Android Auto, and AC/AA gives you the maps navigation. GPS is the one on your phone.

            If that makes sense.

Thanks for the explanation, but that is not what I'm looking for because these car stereos look more like marketing than something I really need.
I think that Blaupunkt has some mid range price (their top ones) stereos which carry a GPS module so that would more suitable to me.

Wireless is useful for shortish journeys. A wireless connection means I don't keep leaving my phone in the car as it stays in my pocket. It's useful on long journeys too as I can plug my phone into a better charger than the head unit's USB.

      • As others said, it's a convenience as you are immediately connected as soon as the car is on. Like how handfree in cars work.

Keep in mind it uses WiFi instead of bluetooth, so if you decide to take a call privately or disconnect from the unit, turn off your WiFi instead.

      • ??

        It's wireless.

    • Code doesn't seem to work. Entered it full and separate.

  • I have this unit and lately it has been playing up. The screen would completely freeze up and the maps lags out really hard and then updates your position every 10+ seconds. I have missed turns because of it.

The issues are random and intermittent, sometimes unplugging and reconnecting the phone helps but of course you have to re-enter your destination again which is a pain while driving. Lately I've been pressing the factory reset button which seems to buy me a longer period of time between issues

I'm sure mine is an isolated case, but just thought I'd share my experience. Apart from that, when the unit is working properly, I haven't really got anything bad to say about it except that the screen is a little small

    • maps lags out really hard

Couldn't that be related to the data transmission (wireless or usb) quality between your phone and the stereo?
I'm looking around for an Android car stereo and I mostly need it for maps navigation so do you know if there are units which have their own gps antenna without connecting to the phone?

      • I thought it might have been a faulty cable but I have changed it and the issue persists, I have also done a firmware update, however the latest firmware is from Sept 2022. I don't think it's data related either, it actually feels like the headunit is glitching/struggling, because once it starts the issue, it does not cease until the car/headunit are powered off.

I think mine is an isolated issue as I haven't been able to find any information online regarding the issue

        • I think mine is an isolated issue

          Return it.

    • I don't think it's just you - I've had it happen a couple of times. I'm rocking a Samsung S10, so far from the latest/greatest. Both times I've rebooted my phone and it's gone back to normal - just sharing my own experience also.

Thank you! Yeah I tried the firmware update and after the update it was ok for a short time and then the issue returned. Also the latest firmware is quite dated (Sept 2022) and seems like updates aren't being rolled out anymore

  • i have a more expensive pioneer head unit and it is such a pos with frequent disconnections, not detecting the phone

    • frequent disconnections

That is why you should spend more money and buy a unit which has its own GPS navigator.

      • i believe it does (previous car owner bought it), its the bluetooth that is glitchy
