Does Anyone Here Still Shop at Woolworths?

Groceries are so expensive, heard ALDI has cheaper prices, are there any alternatives?

  • Still shopping at Woolies using 10% off monthly shop and 5% gift cards, but I have no choice: Only Colesworth and IGA where I live….missing ALDI

  • +8

Only shop at Woolies to avoid the crazies that shop at Aldi.

    • There are bogans everywhere, you are basically admitting to spending more than you should be on a bargain website..

    • How to collect 300k flybuys points annually then?

Btw.. Xiaomi dual app still working with EDR app?

I keep getting " something went wrong…check that Google play is enabled"

        • +1

The new EDR version after 9 JUL or so does not allow it. I have kept an old version while lasts. Now 9 accounts via Super Clone on one phone.

Standard shop at Audi, colesworth every other week for specials. Stock up on half price stuff. I barely buy a single item at full price.

Go through your receipt and see what products are costing you a lot and look at alternatives.

For eggs the backyard, fruit and veggies from a local market where I can.

    • +5

How many Audis do you own!?

  • +1

I shop at Woolies with the 10% monthly discount from their mobile and 5% of gift cards. Mostly only buy things that are on special.

The check out line at my local Aldi is painfully slow with most people buying trolley full of groceries and no self checkout which kinda put me off so I much prefer Woolies. Prices are not much better at Aldi anyway and are on par or even more expensive than things on special at Woolies.

    • -1

      Some Aldis have self-checkout.

  • are there any alternatives?

Anywhere that sells food…… Amazon, IGA, Coles, lots of stores that sell food.

    • But OP wants cheap cheap food…

      • But OP wants cheap cheap food…

What the OP wants and what is out there might not be the same thing. Cheap food is long gone!

  • LoL what a question…do you have a govt job? That's the only way you'd have time to think of putting this nonsense up as a question on OzBargain.

  • As if the ridiculous RRP's for some products are not bad enough at Woolworths and Coles, the self-service checkouts are ridiculous now:

    • Weight scales
    • Cameras incorrectly thinking you have put multiple items in a bag and calling the attendant to watch footage back (when eventually available)
    • Cameras detecting items from elsewhere in the trolley and calling the attendant over (when eventually available)
    • My local Coles has installed security gates in the self-service checkouts area which can be set to not open if they think anyone is shoplifting/you are basically held there against your will until let out..
    • So silly. Bring back the checkout people. You have more people moving through quickly so they enjoy the experience and buy more. Otherwise they just grab the essentials and go meaning less revenue. They pour money on expensive tech that no one wants and doesn’t work well and also encouraging lots of thief. It’s a bad business model.

      • +6

Naw, prefer the self checkouts, last thing anyone needs is to deal with checkout operators.

        • +1

Especially as most don't bother bagging your stuff any more.

    • +1

I was surprised to see a screen showing a full-sized image of my face when I was at the self-service checkout the other day. That's getting scary. Almost makes me not want to shop there.

      • I believe the camera showing your face is just a deterrent - the camera above you on the metal rod is watching you scan and your trolley.

lol its another one of those posts
    like the shoe laces topic

yep u have to be stupid to shop at woolies
like i buy like oats and its cheaper at Adldi
like everything must be cheaper at aldi and better
why would anyone in their right mind shop at woolies
    am i missing something?

    • The main reasons to not shop at ALDI are top-up shops (takes longer to get out of the store) and not being close to one. Most of their products are as good as the brand names - they don't have the best fruit and veg though local fruit shops are usually an option.

      • I find shopping at Aldi much quicker than colesworth, unless they have self serve for small purchases..

Milking the cow in my backyard at the moment.

Local grocers are the way to go.

Can get some ripper savings when they have specials
    (E.g 60c/kg oranges, 99c/kg apples, $8/kg chicken breast etc)

I do Coles and Woolies as a top up or if the grocers don't keep something and even then it's shopping the half price range.
Definitely noticeable the inflation on Coles/Woolies prices in recent years.

  • -1

That just reminded me I forgot to use a Woolworths gift card I have on a recent Dan Murphie's order :(

  • -1

It's not Woolies fault the prices have gone up so much, it's organised crime. You can see them in the car parks, they're the fleets of shopping trolleys speeding towards the exits, pushed by big burly guys wearing masks and carrying baseball bats.

    Have pity on Woolies.

  • Nah I shop at SSW

  • +3

I shop at Harris Farm. Yes, it's more expensive but it's also edible.

    • I've been finding the fruit and veg cheaper at HFM if you stick to specials and imperfect picks. Much fresher and better quality. Their eggs are so much better too, not exactly cheap though.

  • +2

Aldi is cheaper for the standard shopper. Coles and Woolies offer far more ways to reduce your shop while Aldi offer almost zero. I find if I stack reward points, half price specials, gift cards, reduce to clear items and other promotions my shop is cheaper at Woolworths and Coles.

  • I have been shopping at Coles and Woolies significantly less…The aldi closest to me, I found fresh fruit and veges aren't as fresh compared to other shops however there are select Aldi brand products I prefer

Trialing meal prep boxes atm, though more expensive much less wastage and rubbish but atm its OK so far because of the discounts. Like we werent even buying much meat at supermarkets other than eggs and occasional chicken, kept spending decent chunks of $. I am not sure if I will continue after the promos end though still trialing

  • Lol no of course not. Why would people buy from Coles, Woolies, aldi or IGA? Buy a farm with one off fee and you are set for your life.

  • I shop mostly at Aldi. Only buy from Woolies or Coles for products that are on sale or Aldi doesn't have.

Where was Aldi when we had a pandemic and needed food delivered to survive? They don't offer delivery at any time because it costs too much. Woolies and Coles were life savers for the elderly and sick then and still are everyday now for a lot of people. I saw an article recently where Aldi has 10% of the market…..it seems the majority of people realise that you must pay a bit more if you want "Service" by real people and just want to buy everyday quantities of food
    .
Woolies Everyday Extra is a really good deal to pay a once a year fee to then save 10% once a month on a monster shop, plus freebies from time to time on your Woolies ER card. Also Woolies monthly offers where you opt in to spend so much per week over a few weeks to get a reward of about 10% at the end of the period is excellent, especially if also combined with the monthly EE 10% offer at the same time. I have no connection to Woolies but love a bargain and I am very happy with my savings at Woolies, especially since I also get another 10% off once a month from Woolies mobile and my wife has Everyday Extra as well….three shops each month with 10% off…. also get extra savings if you pay with Gift Cards……..I vote for Woolies!

I use aldi for occasional pantry filling "Big Shops". Otherwise the local IGA or Foodworks (The owners of both live locally). For meat it is the local country butcher.. he lives around the corner from me. For milk I buy the products of a local dairy, they are available in local IGA or Foodworks. A little more expensive but great quality and the local dairy is fair in its dealings with its local milk suppliers.
I much prefer to support locally owned businesses who try and do the right thing in the local community and for customers and sell stuff at fair prices

  • I’ve added nqr to our weekly shopping run. Depending on what they have, you can save heaps. But you have to go regularly as good items sell out in days.

  • +2

I shop at all three major as well as NQR. When shopping at Woolies and Coles, I only buy the 1/2 price items I need and some generics. Aldi is my mainstay but I have my finger on the pulse for the price difference between each store Coles at one stage became quite pricey but has recently become better. I usually get meat from the market in bulk and freeze or from Tasman Meats. I occasionally visit NQR for novelty items or surprises. Cheap alcohol for my Cocktail collection. I like to sample new products of interest that turn up there as well.
Shopping becomes a bit of an art, I guess.

  • I went in there today as part of my regular shopping trip there and while in the long line for the cash registers it struck me how empty the place is and nobody goes there anymore.

    • long line and empty is a bit of a oxymoron no?

      • Indeed.

  • Unfortunately yes, as its by far the most convenient option for me. Our nearest Aldi is a bit of a pain to go to and I don't think they have the equivalent level of choice anyway.

Woolies is ripping us all off though. A great example, one of many, is A2 milk that used to be $5 and is now $6.60, an increase of 32%. Go on Woolies, tell me that's all down to inflation. We don't buy it any more.

I'm surprised there isn't more outrage about the opportunistic gouging by supermarkets, we really are quite a passive, submissive population.

  • I mostly shop at Woolworths but there are some products i get from Aldi. Stock up when items are on special but you have to have a fair idea of the prices.

  • Just bought a Monster Zero Ultra from them 15 minutes ago when I walked past.

  • Yep, I exclusively only shop at Woolworths. Qantas points baby!!!

    • It’s not many Qantas points in the scheme of things.

Is it any wonder Woolworths posted a $1.62billion full year profit the other day.

I mainly shop at Aldi, but went to Woolworths yesterday to do some shopping as it was near to where I had just had some X rays. I purchased a number of items including two 1.25 litre bottles of Domestos bleach. Having previously perused Woolworths' current catalogue, I was aware that this item was on special at $3.30.

As I was rushed at the time, I did not check my receipt at the store as, presumably, is the case with most shoppers. However, on arriving home, I did check the receipt and found that I had been charged $6.60 (the regular price) for each Domestos bottle instead of the $3.30 specials price. I tried to phone the store where I had purchased these items to complain but after four unsuccessful attempts to talk to anyone at the store, I gave up and phoned Woolworths directly. I was informed that this was just a specific store charging error, however, given that Woolworths uses an automated scanning systems that applies to all of their stores, I found this hard to accept. The Woolworths person said that this matter would be reported to the appropriate section for action.

The point here is: the current catalogue prices took effect on Wednesday morning. I purchased my items on Thursday afternoon. So, you have to wonder how many shoppers of this very popular household cleaning item have been ripped off 100% in the period since the catalogue took effect and how many more will continue to be ripped off until Woolworths rectifies this major blunder. In the meantime, Woolworths' revenue will continue to increase aided by this blatant ripping off of its customers.

    • Return and get refunded the difference on 1 item and make sure you get the other item for free. Then purchase 1 more and see if they fixed the problem you reported. If not get that item for free. Rinse and repeat every day. I have seen this happen often and agree it's most likely every store and they may not fix it at all. I once got a free $8 item for free several times.

      • +1

Short term personal solution, yes, but it really pisses me off that so many shoppers throughout Australia are unknowingly being ripped off by Woolworths. I'd hate to think how many bottles of Domestos Woolworths would sell nationally each day, so over a week the profit from this blatant ripping off of its customers would be substantial.

    • I have had this happen at all different stores including Foodland and Drakes. It happens…

    • +1

      major blunder
      blatant rip off

      Over reaction?

  • +2

Unfortunately yes. There really aren't many other options. Coles is arguably worse, and shopping at Aldi feels like going to the bottle-0 on a Thursday when all the disability pensioners just got their paycheck and are spending up.

  • +1

Yeah. I got in a huff and thought Woolies were ripping us off but then I went to Aldi and prices were more or less the same, SOMETIMES you get more in product BUT EVERYTHING tastes inferior.

Chocolate is bad, produce is horrible, meat always close to expiring, chips that are raved about make me feel queasy even the world kitchen chicken chipotle meal is inferior…after that I moved back to Woolies again, oddly Coles and the way they treat people irk me more.

  • Only Colesworth and IGA in North Queensland wilderness. No Aldi north of Rockhampton. Yet.

    • -1

      Move

    • love Rockhampton, miss those days

  • +1

Woolies posted $1.6bn profit last week.. I'm sure plenty shop with them…

  • We buy almost everything from Aldi and our local fruit and veg independent seller. Made the change this year. No regrets. Only go to ColesWorth for things only they have.

  • +1

    heard ALDI has cheaper prices

When did you arrive in Australia? Yesterday? Are you uncapable of checking prices and compare?

I do shop at Woolworths using 4% off gift card, and I buy lots of things at reduced price (which would likely be cheaper than Aldi).

Still, inflation is terrible, everywhere. Not long ago we were talking about farmers increasing the price of the milk because $1/litre was unsustainable. Now the "low price" is $1.60 (Woolworths brand)

Aldi might have some (?most) cheaper items, but the brands are very restricted. You might find one brand of toilet paper, one brand of peanut butter, etc. Overall, it'd be a bit cheaper, but I don't think it's "better" for my use, and I don't have one as close as WW.

  • Yes, but mix it up with coles and woolies. I get one free bunch sample a week, make use of the half price specials and points deals. I Would probably go once a fortnight.

    • +1

One Bunch sample a week? I'm lucky if I get one a month these days

      • You have to be active on the Bunch site and be ‘Gourmet’ level to get one sample a week. I generally get pretty good samples. There’s some pretty easy ways to get comments and likes which increases your status to be gourmet level.

      • I have 10 not-so-active bunch accounts, about 10 free samples per month.

        • +1

So if you made them active you’d get about 40 free samples a month.

          • @morse: It already made me feel it a hassle to track them. Don't forget the time spent to find the unusual products and check them out, not to say occasional wrong products, no stock or system glitches.

            • @Neoika: 10 would be a lot of work! How did you get 10? I know a lot of people have gone on the waiting list and not been picked to join. I’d find tracking 10 Woolworths rewards accounts tricky. Two in our household seems to be enough to get a good mix of deals.

              • @morse: It has been 5 to 6 years. I am not surprised at Woolies may start crack down on this practice. The last time I advised here to stay logging in multiple EDR accounts on one device via clone APP, it was disabled in a week by a new version.

              • @morse: I have been on the waiting list for a few days over 1 year.

                • @Yola: I think the trick to join fast is to not locate yourself in a fully developed area, but a developing area. The free samples are usually slow to sell and it definitely prioritizes to sell them rather than give away.

  • I import my groceries from overseas to avoid people like you at the shops.

  • -1

Hah, they said I was crazy when I bought 1000s of tinned canned food at 50% off 10 years ago. Safe from climate change in my underground bunker as well.

    Now who's laughing?

  • I only shop at Safeway

  • +1

Ok, so. About a year ago (before I had Everyday Extra) I priced everything on my large shopping list (I usually stock up every 3 months, and fill in gaps in between) through the Woolworths app, using the in store prices. I then went to Aldi and bought everything that was cheaper by a measurable margin (IE, not just 1-2c cheaper). I bought most of my groceries from Woolworths that day.

I find most of the considerably cheaper products at Aldi aren’t what I buy, and when they are, the 10% discount and bonus points I have at Woolworths now tend to negate the difference. Still a few things worth going to Aldi for, like grain free tinned dog food and cereal (Woolworths cereal sucks and Coles is too far away for just Rice Bubbles), but it’s not cheap enough for me to move my entire shop

  • This will probably be an unpopular opinion, have found Harris farm markets to be actually more competitive now with the price gouging going on and also with the meat and produce to be chalk and cheese compared both Woolies/coles. The big caveat is that you have to shop the specials to come in at approx the same weekly cost or sometimes even cheaper.

    • +1

Harris Farm is great. Only shop the specials and imperfect picks though. Quality is much higher than the two stupormarkets and I save a lot of money going there. Much more pleasant shopping experience too.

  • hell no….and coles go stuff themselves too

  • Normally use Vic market for meat and veg for the week, Woolies for milk and other sundries (dog food. Cleaning. Junk food..), it really stings when having to get veggies due to change of plan or something and paying around 30-100% more than from the market..

I should experiment switching to ALDI for the milk etc

  • only place i could find safflower oil and my kitten only eats Smitten food. These are the only 2 things i buy from them

  • -1

ONLY COLESTWORTH ORDERS DURING HALF PRICE SPECIALS

OTHERWISE I PREFR PHYSICALLY GOING INSIDE ALDI
