Are The Dyson Headphones The Most Stupid Product of 2023?

So who's seen the new Dyson Headphones? Headphones with a facemask that 'purifies the air'. Call me a cynic but I can't see them catching on & I don't expect to see people on our commuter trains wearing them.

I saw an advert for them last week, I thought it was a bad joke, but no Dyson is selling them. For a company that seems to generally sell good products, at a high price, that seems to succeed, this would have to fall into the 'blunder' category. Like the "Homepod" of the Dyson world.

Who dares to be the first to be spotted at a major railway station sporting one of these?

LOL @ $1100… JFC, Dyson, pull your heads in.

    • No, no…I think you're mistaken….Dyson will pay you $1100 to wear it.

These are great for sucking out all your ear wax…

Can you see heaps of people looking like this around the city:- https://images.app.goo.gl/uPz9sDLAv9BoJSgP9

I could see the concept being popular in countries with poor quality but the design is terrible. They're so bulky, they look like something out of 2006. And come on, rose gold? In 2023??

    • Prussian Blue/Copper is a Dyson colour-way across their range.

      • Damn they're sticking with the colour schemes they created for their domestic appliances? I feel like that's a recipe for failure considering they're going to have to target the early-adopter crowd with this sort of product.

        • The weird thing is that the alternate Ultra Blue/Prussian Blue colour-way of the limited edition is cheaper.

    • It looks like a dog muzzle

When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

  • Hey! I love my HomePods! Best and most elegant sound system. Connects to Apple TV for HDMI ARC, just works. HomeKit also working flawlessly. For the price and sound quality it cannot be matched. $500 and it sounds better than my $800 bookshelves too.

I too, wear my Google Nest Minis on either side of my head with some duct tape as the headband.

I'm sure some people love them, but they are widely regarded as Apples biggest 'flop' product. No doubt great if your 'all in' on Apple but a bit of a flop outside that niche.

      • Can't be that big of a flop if they made a version 2. I can think of bigger Apple flops. Like half the things Apple did under the Pepsi guy who didn't really understand what kind of company Apple was.

      • +1

Nah there have been much bigger Apple flops than HomePod. Apart from the fact that they didn't have Spotify, the main thing that people didn't like about them was that they were too expensive. The sound quality was amazing. After Apple discontinued them, they continued to sell second hand at crazily inflated prices.

These Dyson "Bane" headphones are obviously stillborn. They don't pass the "would people be happy with how they looked wearing these" test, nor the "do people want to be breathing through a respirator the whole time when they're out" test, plus they've arrived about three years too late to capitalise on people's desire for air purification in the pandemic.

Just call it a Daft Punk cosplay …

  • +4

Probably just requires 1 rapper to wear them in a music video & they'll fly off the shelves.

  • Was just a big publicity stunt in my opinion to sell more of their proper products like their Vaccums, Hair Styling tools, Fans etc.

Gruen took the pi** out of them a few weeks ago. You can probably find the episode on ABC iView.

    EDIT: S15, E8.

  • Antman fans, rejoice! This is sure one helluva piece of kit. A head turner for sure.

For a company that seems to generally sell good products, at a high price,

    Citation needed.

Their vacuums are hideously overpriced and notoriously unreliable.

As for these "headphones", I can see Apple fanboys jumping all over them like they did with the equally-stupidly designed and overpriced Apple AirPod Maxes.
Apple users relish any opportunity to look conspicuously bourgeois through their choice of hideously overpriced and technically-underwhelmingly electronics/computing products.

    • Are Dyson also made by Foxconn.

    • Citation - Our first Dyson lasted 12 years, the second has been 10yrs now.

        • My Dyson V10 stick vac has been an expensive lemon compared to an earlier stick vac of theirs I had. So I tend to agree with this sentiment. I think they've become a much more mass consumer goods company now. Though their after sales support is still good – they willingly send out spare parts etc outside of warranty.

Their vacuums are hideously overpriced and notoriously unreliable.

Most Dyson reliablilty issues are from the user not looking after them by keeping the filters clean, and giving the unit a good clean from time to time. Those motor heads need cleaning too!

Plus batteries die, they last 2-3 years generally.

Selling well overseas in the areas that have lots of fires!

    • I bet it would sell in countries with lots of air pollution year round, like Thailand. Some countries are so accustomed to pollution that it's just part of their daily weather report. Heat, humidity, wind, pollution particles per million.

      • I'm sure Dyson did market research if this would sell or not. Unlike the people that down voted my earlier comment!

The US/Canada has huge bush fires, the smoke is heavy everywhere. I'm sure there are lots of people wearing them over there!

Asia is used to wearing masks before covid, so it'll be a nothing for them too.

  • Idiot idea

  • I remember these were first revealed last year around April Fools, but Dyson confirmed it was a real product…

  • Watch out Batman! $1100 headphones to look like Bane?!?

    • If this had a Bane voice option I would be soo happy

  • i went to my local dyson shop and tried them on.
tooo hard to even put on properly

  • I dont get the relationship between headphones & air purifers, why put it on the same product?. What’s next, the vacuum - toaster combo?

    • +1

That's ridiculous. A vacuum-air fryer combo makes much more sense!

    • because Dyson likes to innovate in any space that involves moving air. Unless it's unbelievably overpriced and over engineered LED desk lamps. They like to do that too.

  • I thought this post was going to be about the ugly af vacuum looking headphones that I saw advertised in a JB email the other day.
Had no idea they had an air purifier extension 😂

  • Apart from looking ridiculous and costing a fortune who actually think they could possibly purify the air you breath without forming a seal? What do they do - blow a bit of air around your mouth and nose? There's no way there could be enough airflow to cover normal breathing.

  • I tried this on in Asia but without the mouthpiece and OMG they're heavy!
You're gonna have to do a F1 neck workout to wear these bad boys!!!

If I took those headphones off would you die?

  • Cyberpunk aesthetic

  • Why isn't this a poll?

  • +1

It's a collaboration effort with the Wuhan lab so they can sell heaps when another virus comes out :)

  • -2

    It's ok.
The "woke" ones will buy them!

  • Actually would be worth it this week in Sydney the smoke pollution has been bad, reviews have been positive.
That being said, no way I would purchase or wear this product.

  • Im still waiting for these to go on clearance because everyone thinks they are rediculous
