Is it safe to travel there now? Or it’s still a bit like Arkham City. Anyone got recent experience?

as long as your phone/social media doesnt have any "anti-national security material" currently or previously
which by their definition, the unlawful materials literally can be anything when the government wants to prosecute you

      • Genuinely curious, what would be classifid as 'anti national security material'? I know people who bought new phones to bring when they visited HK recently and I would also be worried that something of THAT old Winnie the Pooh meme would cause me trouble. lol

We went in March/April and it was fine, but we have young children so we weren't hitting the night spots or attending gatherings & protests. For general tourist and local stuff it felt normal, but definitely has lost some "buzz" that it used to have. Don't know how much of it is due to the national security laws or recovery from covid closures. Some of the markets were much quieter than I expected.

I'm from HK and was there 2 days ago. Its a lot quieter as mainland china tourists haven't really returned. Yes keep quiet about politics. If you are thinking about protests those ended at the start of Covid 3 years ago. It's really hot and humid right now (but won't be as hot next year when this deal is on). I guess hotels are almost back to normal pricing, the Covid extremely low pricing is very much over.

CCP ruins everything, my anti-CCP has me on a list I’m sure..

Just came back last month. Very worth to visit and I have booked again the trip to Hong Kong during Easter 2024.

damn 15 hour flight from brissy its usually about 8

  • Any cheap flights to Malaysia around this time?

    • Looking the same. Any deals on business?

    • Book to Hong Kong n don't catch the connecting flight to HK. Take the shuttle tebrau to JB.

      • That's if your hometown is in JB though

        • or catch a airasia /scoot/jetstar flight to Malaysia. or bus from Singapore to KL. u got so many options to go to Malaysia from Singapore.

          • @mikeleemy: Options yes. But the extra time and effort it takes doesn't justify it, hence the original comment in asking for a deal.

      • +1

Hmm.. I am wanting to go to JB to visit family

It's a shame they have this new national security law. I'd love to travel otherwise. The part that concerns me is activities that occurred outside of China.

On the smart traveller website it lists this.

The new national security law for Hong Kong may be interpreted broadly. The law could be applied to activities that occurred outside Hong Kong, including social media posts. You could break the law without intending to. You may be at increased risk of detention on vaguely defined national security grounds. The maximum penalty under this law in Hong Kong is life imprisonment. The Australian Government can't intervene in the Hong Kong judicial process.

  • Can you have a stopover in Singapore at all?

    • +1

      It's mandatory lol

      • +1

I think @denwol is referring to transit - only transit is mandatory. Stopover means at least 24 hours or overnight between flights and you get out of the airport. SQ used to have great stopover package with almost no extra charges and cheap hotel rates.

  • Waiting for Singapore Deals if any.

  • +4

You'd be bonkers to miss out on Honkers

  • +2

is it possible to stopover in Singapore for longer on either leg, e.g. a week?

    • Yes you can. But that would be like multi city trip n may not be available at this price.

  • +4

I have an issue in that if you check out the ticket sellers with the cheapest prices you would be a mug to buy from them. Just check out their reviews on Product Review and you will/should run for a mile. If you do insist on proceeding and book through a bucket shop then you deserve what you get.
IMHO Iwantthatflight do their reputation immeasurable damage by including these bucket shops in their pricing.
